COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State (5-9) women’s lacrosse squad will close out the home schedule with a 6 p.m., Wednesday, April 28 game against Duquesne (11-3). The Buckeyes are closing out a three-game home stand that saw the Buckeyes fall to No. 19 Penn State, 13-10, and defeat Lafayette, 18-1.
A LOOK AT OHIO STATE
Sue Stimmel coaches the Buckeyes. Ohio State is 5-9 overall and 1-4 in the American Lacrosse Conference. Last week the Buckeyes lost 13-10 to Penn State and defeated Lafayette, 18-1, in home games. Ohio State’s Regina Oliver (Jr., Pottstown, Pa.) is the team leader in points with 31. She has 21 goals and a team-high 10 assists. Caroline Weatherill (Sr., Malvern, Pa.) ranks second with 25 points (team-high 22 goals, 3 assists). Ashley Evans (Jr., Ellicott City, Md.) is third with 20 from 17 goals and three assists. Oliver leads the team in ground balls (52) and caused turnovers (41). Evans is second in ground balls with 33 and Kathryn Kozlakowski (Jr., Towson, Md.) is third with 31. Kelly Cook (Sr., Downingtown, Pa.) is second in caused turnover with 18 and Evans is third with 14. Oliver leads the team with 21 draw controls with Weatherill second with 17 and KC Carter (So., Birchrunville, Pa.) third with 16. Kim Hastings (So., Sewickley, Pa.) and Taryn Bowen (Sr., Columbus, Ohio) have been splitting time in goal. Hastings has started 12 matches and has a 5-7 record. She has made 78 saves (.497) and has a 10.22 goals against average. Bowen has two starts with a 0-2 record. She has made 50 saves (.442) and has a 10.91 goals against average. A LOOK AT DUQUESNE
Kim Eldridge coaches the Dukes. Duquesne has an overall record of 11-3. They have won four straight matches and 10 of their last 11. Last Sunday at home the Dukes defeated Saint Joseph’s, 11-9. Ginger Flocco is the team leader in points with 66. She has team-highs of 47 goals and 19 assists. Laura App is second in points with 45 (29 goals, 16 assists). Courtney Tasasitis, Krista Mann and Kristina Rohall share the team lead in ground balls with 27 each. Flocco has a team-high 39 draw controls with Mann second with 40. In caused turnovers, Rohall has a team-high 24 with App second with 22. In goal, Sarah Pacini has started all 14 games and has an 11-3 record. She has 121 saves (.502) and an 8.41 goals against average.
DUQUESNE-OHIO STATE SERIES HISTORY
Ohio State has a 6-1 lead in the series with Duquesne. The Buckeyes have won the last two meetings and all three games played in Columbus. The series began in 1997 with an 18-7 Ohio State win at Duquesne. The Buckeyes won in 1998, 14-2, in Columbus. In Pittsburgh, Pa., the Buckeyes won, 13-12, in 1999. Ohio State made it four in a row with a 19-3 win in Columbus in 2000. Duquesne captured a 14-12 home win in 2001. In 2002, Ohio State won, 18-5, at home and won 10-5 at Duquesne in 2003.
THE LAST TIME: OHIO STATE 10, DUQUESNE 5
Ohio State, behind three goals by Shannon Wilson and two from Regina Oliver, defeated Duquesne, 10-5, at Rooney Field Thursday night. OSU opened the scoring with a Wilson goal at 8:50, assisted by Oliver. A Buckeye goal by Tracey Bounds at 9:42 and a second goal by Wilson at 11:32 gave Ohio State a 3-0 lead. Duquesne’s Ginger Flocco put the Dukes on the scoreboard at 16:33 to cut the margin to 3-1. The Buckeyes scored three more times in the half for a 6-1 lead. Oliver began the three-goal run at 20:29. OSU’s Ashley Evans made it 5-1 at 23:15. Buckeye Caroline Weatherill closed out the scoring in the half at 24:15. Buckeye Wilson opened the scoring in the second half at 31:48 with a free position attempt. Duquesne responded with a score by Alison Smith at 42:53, assisted by Carrie Watkins. OSU’s Andrea Fischer made the Buckeye lead, 8-2 with a goal at 45:32. OSU took a seven-point lead (9-2) at 52:43 with Oliver’s second goal, assisted by Molly McLaughlin. Smith’s scored at 53:39 to cut the margin to 9-3. Buckeye Megan Stickler, scored on a free position attempt at 55:58. Duquesne closed out the scoring with goals by Lauren Mincher, assisted by Laura App, at 57:06 and Flocco’s second goal, assisted by Watkins, at 58:02 for a final score of, 10-5, Ohio State. Duquesne’s Sarah Pacini recorded 19 assists in the game for the Dukes. Ohio State’s Erin Forquer played the first half (30:00) recording four saves while giving up one goal. Kim Hastings started the second half, playing 22:43, collecting one save and giving up one goal, while Taryn Bowen finished out the game (7:17), giving up three goals.
PENN STATE 13, OHIO STATE 10
Ohio State fell to 19th-ranked Penn State, 13-10, in a game shown live on College Sports Television. OSU’s Caroline Weatherill had a team-high six goals for the Buckeyes with Regina Oliver adding two goals and two assists. Penn State’s Kristen Burke had a team-high five goals for the Nittany Lions with Shari Maslin and Lori Havrilla adding two goals each. Tied at four, Penn State scored three goals in the final nine minutes of the half to hold a 7-4 halftime lead. OSU cut the lead to 7-6 in the opening minutes of the second half, but a three-goal burst by Penn State made it 10-6. OSU would come no closer than two the rest of the half with Penn State winning 13-10. Taryn Bowen stared in goal for OSU, playing 21:54, making one saves and giving up five goals. Kim Hastings finished the game (38:06), giving up eight goals and making eight assists. PSU’s Lee Tortorelli got the win in goal making 12 saves while giving up 10 goals.
OHIO STATE 18, LAFAYETTE 1
Ohio State scored 17 unanswered goals against Lafayette going on to win, 18-1. Twelve Ohio State players scored goals in the game that saw Caroline Weatherill score a game-high three goals for the Buckeyes. Noemi Hites, KC Carter and Amy Tulk each added two goals for OSU. Kim Hastings, playing the first half, took the win while making three saves. Taryn Bowen started the second half, playing 12 minutes and collecting one saves. Joy DeMarco closed out the final 18 minutes in goal for OSU making two saves and giving up the lone Lafayette goal. Jaclyn Kushner took the loss in goal for Lafayette playing 43:20. She had three saves and gave up 17 goals. Stephanie Marcon finished out the game (16:40) making six saves and giving up a goal.
EVANS SCORING STREAK STOPPED AT 11
Ashley Evans had her goal scoring streak ended against Penn State at 11 games. She failed to score against the Nittany Lions but came back with a goal and an assist against Lafayette. She had four multiple goal games during the streak. She had scored two goals against Cornell, at Virginia Tech and at Vanderbilt. She equaled her career-high with three goals against Notre Dame.
HASTINGS AND BOWEN SHARING THE GOAL
Kim Hastings and Taryn Bowen has been sharing the goal keeping duties for the Buckeyes. Hastings has played in all 14 games and has started in 12 games and has a 5-7 record in playing 463 minutes. Bowen has seen action in all 14 games with two starts (0-2) and has 346 minutes. Hastings has a .497 saves percentage (78 saves) and has a 10.22 goals (79) against average. Bowen has 50 saves (.442) had has a 10.91 goals (63) against average.
OLIVER BECOMES CAREER GROUND BALL LEADER
With seven ground balls on the weekend, Regina Oliver has become the Ohio State career leader with 164. Oliver picked up four ground balls against Penn State and another three in the Lafayette to reach 164. She passes previous leader Shannon Wilson (2000-03) who had 159.
OLIVER MOVES TO SIXTH IN CAREER POINTS
With eight points on the weekend, Regina Oliver has moved to sixth on the OSU career points list with 127 (92 goals, 35 assists). Oliver had two goals and two assists against Penn State, adding eight draw controls, four ground balls and three caused turnovers against the Nittany Lions. In the Lafayette game, she had a goal and three assists and added three ground balls, a draw control and a caused turnover. Oliver moved past Laurie Rybak (1996-99) with 119 points (69-50).
OLIVER’S FIVE ASSISTS MOVES HER TO SEVENTH ON THE OSU CAREER LIST
Regina Oliver’s two assists against Penn State and three against Lafayette has moved her to seventh on the OSU career assist list with 35. She passed Alexia Vogler (2000-03) with 34.
WEATHERILL NOW NINTH IN CAREER GOALS
With six goals against Penn State and three in the Lafayette game, Caroline Weatherill now has 71 in her career. She has moved to ninth on the Ohio State career goals list passing Laurie Rybak (1996-99) with 69.
OHIO STATE REGULAR SEASON ROAD WIN STREAK STOPPED AT TEN
With a 10-9 overtime win at Stanford, Ohio State extended its regular season road-winning streak to 10 games. The streak ended two days later with a 10-6 loss at California. OSU won all eight regular season road games last season including wins at Penn State and Notre Dame. The streak included a 2002 victory at Ohio.
OHIO STATE, THE DEFENDING AMERICAN LACROSSE CONFERENCE CHAMPIONS
At the end of the 2003 ALC season, Ohio State and Penn State were tied with 5-1 records. Based upon the league bylaws, Ohio State’s 10-9 win at Penn State made the Buckeyes the outright champion of the conference. They bylaw was written to select the league’s automatic berth into the NCAA Championship, which takes effect this season.
BUCKEYES PICKED TO WIN ALC CHAMPIONSHIP
Ohio State, the defending American Lacrosse Conference Champion, has been picked as the preseason favorite to win the league championship by a vote of the conference coaches. OSU received four of the seven first place votes and 46 total points. Penn State was ranked second with two first place votes and 43 points. The Buckeyes and Nittany Lions finished the 2003 conference season with 5-1 records but Ohio State won the championship based upon the bylaws of the conference.
OLIVER AND CARTER NAMED TO ALC PRESEASON ALL-CONFERENCE TEAM
By a vote of the conference coaches, Ohio State midfielders Regina Oliver (Jr., Pottstown, Pa.) and KC Carter (So., Birchrunville, Pa.) have been named to the 12-player 2004 American Lacrosse Conference Preseason All-Conference Team. Oliver was further honored as the 2004 Preseason Player of the Year. She was the 2003 ALC Player of the Year and the 2002 Rookie of the Year. Carter was the 2003 Rookie of the Year.
JESSE OWENS MEMORIAL STADIUM, HOME OF THE BUCKEYES
The 8,000-seat Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium arguably is one of the finest multi-sport facilities in the country, hosting track and field and lacrosse in the spring and soccer in the fall. Over the last two years, the Buckeyes are 14-5 (.737) at the facility.
HEAD COACH Sue Stimmel
Sue Stimmel is in her ninth season as the head coach for the Ohio State women’s lacrosse team. A 1984 graduate of Temple University, Stimmel is the only coach that the Buckeye program has had. She spent six years has the head coach of Denison prior to coming to Ohio State. Stimmel is 72-58 (.554) at Ohio State and is 148-76 (.664) in her 15-year career. The 2003 season was her most successful with a program-high 14 wins, finishing the regular season ranked 11th nationally and making the school’s second consecutive appearance in the NCAA Championship, advancing to the quarterfinals. Her squad won the 2003 American Lacrosse Conference Championship and she was named the ALC Coach of the Year and was later named the 2003 Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association Regional Coach of the Year.
