Women’s Lacrosse Loses 13-10 Decision to No. 19 Penn State – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State (4-9 overall, 1-4 American Lacrosse Conference) women’s lacrosse team lost a 13-10 decision to 19th-ranked Penn State (5-9, 2-2) Friday night in Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium in a game telecast live by College Sports Television. Nittany Lion Kristen Burke powered Penn State with a team-high five goals and two assists. OSU’s Caroline Weatherill (Sr., Malvern, Pa.) equaled her career-high of six goals (set this season vs. Cornell) for the Buckeyes.
Penn State opened the scoring with a Burke goal at 1:53 gone in the first half. Buckeye Amy Tulk (Sr., West Chester, Pa.) scored at 6:18 to tie the game. PSU goals by Emily Chambers, assisted by Burke, at 12:19 and Katie Hartman’s free position goal at 12:19 made it 3-1, Penn State. The Buckeye the lead to 3-2 with a Weatherill goal at 15:53 on a free position shot. The Nittany Lions made it 4-2 with a goal by Shari Maslin, assisted by Burke, at 17:32. An unassisted goal by Weatherill at 18:36 and her third goal at 19:48, assisted by Regina Oliver (Jr., Pottstown, Pa.) tied the game at four. A free position goal at 21:54 by Katie Jeschke stared a three-goal run by Penn State. Burke’s second goal with an assist to Maslin at 29:20 and a goal by Lori Havrilla at 29:58 gave Penn State a 7-4 halftime lead.
OSU’s Weatherill opened the scoring in the second half with her fourth goal at 30:40. Oliver scored at 37:03 on an assist from Molly McLaughlin (Sr., Towson, Md.) to cut the Penn State to one at 7-6. Penn State responded with three quick goals, the first two by Burke at 39:22 and 40:41. Stephanie Curnoles, at 41:11, scored on a pass from Jamie Donahue to make the Penn State lead, 10-6. The Buckeyes again cut into the lead with Weatherill’s fifth goal at 44:34 and Oliver’s second goal at 47:50 to cut the lead to 10-8. Burke countered with her fifth goal at 50:27, assisted by Maslin to make the lead three at 11-8. Weatherill responded with her sixth goal of the game at 51:57, assisted by Oliver to cut the Penn State lead back to two. Havrilla’s second unassisted goal at 52:14 made it 12-9 Penn State. Buckeye KC Carter (So., Birchrunville, Pa.) cut the lead to two (12-10) with a goal at 52:26. Maslin’s second goal of the game at 54:12 returned the Penn State lead to three at 13-10, ending the scoring. In goal for Penn State, Lee Tortorelli had 12 saves while giving up 10 goals in the win. OSU’s Taryn Bowen (Sr., Columbus, Ohio) started the game and was replaced by Kim Hastings (So., Sewickley, Pa.) at the 21:54 mark of the first half. Bowen gave up five goals while recording one save. Hastings had five saves in 38:06 and gave up eight goals.
Ohio State continues a three-game home stand Sunday when they host Lafayette (4-12) in an 11 a.m. game at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.
