COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State (4-8, 1-3 American Lacrosse Conference) women’s lacrosse squad will face No. 19 Penn State (3-9, 1-2) Friday, April 23 at 7 p.m. in Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium in a game that will be carried live by CSTV. Jason Knapp and Sheehan Stanwick will call the action. The Buckeyes will then host Lafayette Sunday, April 25 at 11 a.m. The Buckeyes last Sunday lost a 12-9 decision at 10th-ranked Vanderbilt.
SENIORS HONORED SUNDAY
Ohio State will honor its senior class at Sunday’s 11 a.m. game against Lafayette. Departing seniors included Kelly Cook, Taryn Bowen, Noemi Hites, Jodi Kurylo, Molly McLaughlin, Amy Tulk and Caroline Weatherill.
A LOOK AT OHIO STATE
Sue Stimmel coaches the Buckeyes. Ohio State is 4-8 overall and 1-3 in the American Lacrosse Conference. The Buckeyes lost a 12-9 decision at Vanderbilt Sunday. Ohio State’s Regina Oliver (Jr., Pottstown, Pa.) is the team leader in points with 23. She has a team-high 18 goals and five assists. Ashley Evans (Jr., Ellicott City, Md.) is second in points with 18 from 16 goals and two assists. Caroline Weatherill (Sr., Malvern, Pa.) ranks third with 16 (13 goals, 3 assists). Oliver leads the team in ground balls (45) and caused turnovers (37). Evans is second in ground balls with 30 and Kathryn Kozlakowski (Jr., Towson, Md.) is third with 29. Kelly Cook (Sr., Downingtown, Pa.) is second in caused turnover with 17 and Evans is third with 13. Weatherill leads the team with 16 draw controls with KC Carter (So., Birchrunville, Pa.) second with 13. Oliver and Evans are tied for third with 12. Kim Hastings (So., Sewickley, Pa.) and Taryn Bowen (Sr., Columbus, Ohio) have been splitting time in goal. Hastings has started 11 matches and has a 4-7 record. She has made 69 saves (.493) and has a 10.77 goals against average. Bowen has one start with a 0-1 record. She has made 48 saves (.453) and has an 11.13 goals against average.
A LOOK AT PENN STATE
Suzanne Isidor coaches the 19th-ranked Nittany Lions. Penn State fell to 3-9 overall and 1-2 in the ALC after a 13-11 home loss to ninth-ranked Northwestern. Leading Penn State in points with 33 is Lori Havrilla with a team-high 24 goals and nine assists. Shari Maslin ranks second with 23 with 13 goals and 10 assists. Lee Tortorelli has a team-high 29 ground balls and 13 caused turnovers. Janique Craig ranks second in ground balls with 17 and second in caused turnovers with 10. In draw controls, Maslin leads the team with 23. Stephanie Curnoles ranks second with 19. In goal, Tortorelli has started all 12 games and has a 3-9 record. She has a .532 saves percentage and has a 10.61 goals against average.
PENN STATE-OHIO STATE SERIES HISTORY
Penn State leads the series with Ohio State, 5-2. The Buckeyes have won the last two meetings with the Nittany Lions while Penn State is 2-1 in Columbus. Penn State won the first five contests in the series, dating back 1997 with a 14-3 win at Penn State. The Nittany Lions won 14-3, in Columbus, in 1998 and 18-9 in State College in 1999. The Nittany Lions won 16-5, in Columbus, in 2000 and 15-10 in 2001 at Penn State. Ohio State defeated the Nittany Lions in Columbus, 15-10 in 2002 and won 10-9, last season at Penn State.
THE LAST TIME: OHIO STATE 10, PENN STATE 9
OSU used four goals each from Shannon Wilson and Regina Oliver to rally for a 10-9 victory over Penn State Sunday afternoon at Jeffrey Field. Penn State opened the game with a 4-0 lead in the first eight minutes. Shari Maslin opened the scoring run at 3:42. Kristen Burke made it 2-0 at 4:36 with an assist from Colleen O’Hara. A free position attempt by Jamie Donahue at 6:55 made it 3-0. Jackie Sherman’s unassisted goal at 12:07 gave PSU a 4-0 lead. Buckeye Ashley Evans stopped the Penn State scoring run with a goal at 15:26. A second goal by Masline, assisted by Lori Havrilla, at 19:02, put the Nittany Lion lead back to four (5-1). A Buckeye goal by Oliver at 19:51 started a three-goal run by the Buckeyes. Caroline Weatherill scored at 21:49 and Oliver’s at 25:06, cut the Penn State lead to 5-4 as the half ended. PSU’s O’Hara expanded the lead to 6-4 with a score at 33:21 to start the second half. OSU’s Wilson cut the PSU lead to 6-5 with a goal at 34:40. She scored again at 37:05 to tie the game at six. Wilson’s next goal at 39:28 put the Buckeyes ahead, 7-6. OSU’s Oliver scored at 42:11 to give OSU an 8-6 lead. PSU responded at 46:58 with a Maslin’s goal and at 51:16 with a Burke score to tie the contest at eight. Both scores were assisted by O’Hara. The Buckeyes regained the lead at 9-8 at 52:04 on a goal by Wilson, assisted by Tracey Bounds. PSU, on a free position attempt by Kristin Wood at 54:21 tied the game at nine. OSU’s Oliver clinched the victory (10-9) with a goal at 56:12. OSU goalie Erin Forquer picked up her 12th win of the season while collecting five saves. PSU goalie Lee Tortorelli took the loss, making six saves.
A LOOK AT LAFAYETTE
Melissa Michels coaches the Leopards. Lafayette has an overall record of 3-11. The Leopards lost, 13-8, at home last Friday against St. Joseph’s. Prior to playing Ohio State, Lafayette plays at Columbia Tuesday and hosts Villanova Friday. Currently Kim Maron is the team leader in points with 32. She has team-highs of 26 goals and six assists. Erin Gallagher and Jennifer Stone are tied for second with 17 points each. Gallagher has 13 goals and four assists while Stone has 12 goals and five assists. Katie Curtin has a team-high 28 ground balls with Gallagher second at 26. Jill Marvin is the team leader in draw controls with 26. Gallagher is second with 22. In caused turnovers, Fallon Cunningham leads the team with 17. Gallagher is second with eight. In goal, Jaclyn Kushner has played the majority of time in goal. She has a .464 saves percentage and a 13.77 goals against average.
LAFAYETTE-OHIO STATE SERIES HISTORY
Ohio State won the only game played with Lafayette. The 11-2 Buckeye win was played in Easton, Pa.
THE LAST TIME: OHIO STATE 11, LAFAYETTE 2
Ohio State had seven student-athletes score goals in an 11-2 victory over Lafayette. OSU’s Regina Oliver scored a team-high three goals for the Buckeyes. Alexia Vogler and KC Carter contributed two goals each while Ashley Evans, Shannon Wilson, Caroline Weatherill and Melissa Sands added a goal each. Ohio State opened the scoring just 47 seconds into the contest with an Oliver goal, assisted by Carter. Carter made it 2-0 at 9:46 on an assist by Vogler. Vogler made it 3-0 at 19:04. Vogler’s second goal at 22:57 with an assist from Noemi Hites made it 4-0. OSU closed out the scoring in the first half with a goal by Weatherill at 27:56, assisted by Vogler, to hold a 5-0 lead. Lafayette opened the second half scoring at 31:16 with a goal by Jennifer Stone to cut the lead to 5-1. OSU’s Carter added her second goal of the game at 33:03 to give the Buckeyes a 6-1 lead. Forty-three seconds (33:46) later on a free position attempt, OSU’s Evans made it 7-1, OSU. The Leopards responded at 34:50 with a goal by Kim Maron, assisted by Stone to made it 7-2. The Buckeyes closed out the scoring with four unanswered goals. Oliver’s second goal came at 42:12 (8-2) followed by Wilson at 49:55 (9-2). Goals by Sands (59:28 (10-2) and Oliver’s third at 59:45 (11-2) completed the Buckeye scoring. OSU’s Erin Forquer recorded six saves in goal while Lafayette’s Tracey Williams had 17.
VANDERBILT 12, OHIO STATE 9
Ohio State lost a 12-9 decision at 10th-ranked Vanderbilt Sunday. OSU’s Regina Oliver had a team-high 3 goals with Ashley Evans adding two. Her two goals extends her goal streak to 11 games. Vanderbilt’s Kate Hockman scored a game-high four goals while Kelly Devlin had a game-high six points with two goals and four assists. Tied at 2, Vanderbilt had a 5-1 run to take a 7-3 halftime lead. The Buckeye closed to within three at 9-6 before three Commodore goals opened a 12-6 lead. Three Buckeye goals closed out the scoring for the final 12-9 score. Taryn Bowen took the loss with seven goals and seven saves. Kim Hastings played the second half recording seven saves and giving up five goals. Ashley Bastinelli got the win for Vanderbilt with eight saves while giving up eight goals. Liz Exline closed out the final minutes of the game picking up one save while giving up one goal.
EVANS SCORING STREAK AT 11
With two goals at Vanderbilt, Ashley Evans has extended her goal scoring streak to 11 games. It was her four multiple goal game. She has scored two goals against Cornell, at Virginia Tech and at Vanderbilt. She equaled her career-high with three goals against Notre Dame.
HASTINGS AND BOWEN SHARING THE GOAL
Kim Hastings and Taryn Bowen are sharing the goalie duties for the Buckeyes. Hastings has 11 games and has a 4-7 record in playing 395 minutes. Bowen has seen action in all 12 games with one start (0-1) and has 312 minutes. Hastings has a .493 save percentage (69 saves) and has a 10.77 goals (71) against average. Bowen has 48 saves (.453) had has an 11.13 goals (58) against average.
OLIVER NOW FOURTH IN CAREER GOALS
With three goals at Vanderbilt, Regina Oliver has moved fourth in Ohio State career goals with 89. She had been tied with Lauren Cochran (1999-02) at 86. Oliver passed No. 4 Celeste Cianfrani (1998-01) with 87. Next on the list is Tracey Bounds (2000-03) with 107.
COOK EIGHTH IN CAREER GROUND BALLS
Kelly Cook recorded a ground ball at Vanderbilt and now has 118 in her career. She has moved to ninth on the OSU career ground balls list after being tied with Megan Mirick (1999-02) at 117. Cook stands five ground balls out of seventh place (123), which is currently held by Alexia Vogler (2000-03) and Kylee Reade (1999-02). In career caused turnovers, Cook ranks eighth on the OSU career list with 52.
OSU FACES PENN STATE ON CSTV SCHEDULE
CSTV (College Sports Television) selected the Friday, April 23 Ohio State-Penn State game as part of their 20-event lacrosse schedule. The 7 p.m. game will be one of five regular season women’s games to be carried by CSTV. They will also telecast all three NCAA women’s championship games.
OHIO STATE REGULAR SEASON ROAD WIN STREAK STOPPED AT TEN
With a 10-9 overtime win at Stanford, Ohio State extended its regular season road-winning streak to 10 games. The streak ended two days later with a 10-6 loss at California. OSU won all eight regular season road games last season including wins at Penn State and Notre Dame. The streak included a 2002 victory at Ohio.
OHIO STATE, THE DEFENDING AMERICAN LACROSSE CONFERENCE CHAMPIONS
At the end of the 2003 ALC season, Ohio State and Penn State were tied with 5-1 records. Based upon the league bylaws, Ohio State’s 10-9 win at Penn State made the Buckeyes the outright champion of the conference. They bylaw was written to select the league’s automatic berth into the NCAA Championship, which takes effect this season.
BUCKEYES PICKED TO WIN ALC CHAMPIONSHIP
Ohio State, the defending American Lacrosse Conference Champion, has been picked as the preseason favorite to win the league championship by a vote of the conference coaches. OSU received four of the seven first place votes and 46 total points. Penn State was ranked second with two first place votes and 43 points. The Buckeyes and Nittany Lions finished the 2003 conference season with 5-1 records but Ohio State won the championship based upon the bylaws of the conference.
OLIVER AND CARTER NAMED TO ALC PRESEASON ALL-CONFERENCE TEAM
By a vote of the conference coaches, Ohio State midfielders Regina Oliver (Jr., Pottstown, Pa.) and KC Carter (So., Birchrunville, Pa.) have been named to the 12-player 2004 American Lacrosse Conference Preseason All-Conference Team. Oliver was further honored as the 2004 Preseason Player of the Year. She was the 2003 ALC Player of the Year and the 2002 Rookie of the Year. Carter was the 2003 Rookie of the Year.
JESSE OWENS MEMORIAL STADIUM, HOME OF THE BUCKEYES
The 8,000-seat Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium arguably is one of the finest multi-sport facilities in the country, hosting track and field and lacrosse in the spring and soccer in the fall. Over the last two years, the Buckeyes are 13-4 (.765) at the facility.
HEAD COACH Sue Stimmel
Sue Stimmel is in her ninth season as the head coach for the Ohio State women’s lacrosse team. A 1984 graduate of Temple University, Stimmel is the only coach that the Buckeye program has had. She spent six years has the head coach of Denison prior to coming to Ohio State. Stimmel is 72-58 (.554) at Ohio State and is 148-76 (.664) in her 15-year career. The 2003 season was her most successful with a program-high 14 wins, finishing the regular season ranked 11th nationally and making the school’s second consecutive appearance in the NCAA Championship, advancing to the quarterfinals. Her squad won the 2003 American Lacrosse Conference Championship and she was named the ALC Coach of the Year and was later named the 2003 Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association Regional Coach of the Year.
