COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State (3-6 overall, 0-2 American Lacrosse Conference) women’s lacrosse team lost a 10-6 decision at Virginia Tech (4-4) Friday afternoon in Blacksburg, Va. Ohio State’s Ashley Evans (Jr., Ellicott City, Md.) scored a team-high two goals in the game with KC Carter (So., Birchrunville, Pa.), Amy Tulk (Sr., West Chester, Pa.), Natale Miller (West Chester, Pa.) and Brandie Williams (Jr., Hatboro, Pa.) adding a goal each for the Buckeyes. Virginia Tech’s Britt Faulkner scored a game-high three goals for the Hokies with Kate Threadgold and Lindsey Welch scoring twice each.
Virginia Tech opened the scoring with the first four goals of the game. Threadgold started the scoring run on an unassisted goal at 7:07 gone in the half. Faulkner made it 2-0 at 9:06 with an assist from Kelsey Mays. A second unassisted goal by Threadgold at 13:33 and a score by Lindsay Pieper took the score to 4-0, Hokies. Ohio State got on the scoreboard with an unassisted goal by Carter at 16:24. The Hokies responded with another four-goal run to end the first half. Mays began the scoring run at 18:09 with a goal assisted by Threadgold. Stephanie Jones raised the score to 8-1 with an unassisted goal at 19:42. Welch scored at 26:40 and Faulkner scored on a free position shot at 29:06 to give Virginia Tech an 8-1 lead at the half.
In the second half, Ohio State exploded for five consecutive goals to close the Virginia Tech lead to 9-3. The scoring run began at 30:32 with a goal by Evans on an assist by Regina Oliver (Jr., Pottstown, Pa.). Tulk scored at 32:31, unassisted, to cut the lead to 8-3. Unassisted goals by Williams (37:58) and Miller (47:58) and Evans’ second goal at 50:46, assisted by Caroline Weatherill (Sr., Malvern, Pa.) to cut the Hokie lead to two at 8-6. Virgina Tech closed out the scoring with an unassisted goal by Welch at 52:37 and Faulker’s third goal on an assist from Mays at 59:11 to close the scoring at 10-6.
In goal for Virginia Tech, Jamie McGraw collected 11 saves, while giving up six goals in the win. OSU’s Kim Hastings (So., Sewickley, Pa.) took the loss in goal for the Buckeyes, playing the first thirty minutes, giving up five saves and eight goals. OSU’s Taryn Bowen (Sr., Columbus, Ohio) played the second half recording five saves while giving up two goals.
Ohio State returns home for a 1 p.m. Sunday, April 4 game against American Lacrosse Conference opponent Davidson (3-8, 0-4 ALC), who suffered a 16-7 loss at Ohio University Friday.
