No. 5 Ohio State Gymnastics Secures NCAA Championships Berth – Ohio State Buckeyes

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – The No. 5 Ohio State men’s gymnastics team advanced to the 2004 NCAA Men’s Gymnastics Championships Friday in Champaign, Ill., by posting a second-place 219.625 in the second session of the national qualifier. Also qualifying was No. 4 California, placing first with a score of 220.875. No. 1 Illinois finished third, posting a 218.525. No. 2 Oklahoma, No. 3 Penn State and No. 7 Michigan round out the Top 6 teams in the national championships after qualifying during Session I. The team and all-around championships are set for 7 p.m. Saturday at Assembly Hall.
After a bye in the first rotation, the Buckeyes began the competition on floor where they posted a 36.875 to finish third. OSU concluded its rings (37.050) and high bar (37.625) rotations in first-place. The Buckeyes finished second on parallel bars, scoring a 34.80. On pommel horse and vault, Ohio State placed fourth, scoring a 36.250 and a 37.025, respectively.
On floor Randy Monahan (Jr.; Elizabethtown, Pa.) led the Buckeyes with a second-place score of 9.7 and Kerry Adderly (Jr., Orlando, Fla.) finished 10th with a season-high 9.4. As the top Buckeye on pommel horse, Willie Ito (Fr., Huntington Beach, Calif.) scored a 9.175 to place 15th. On rings, Monahan placed fourth with 9.425 points and teammate Adderly tied for fifth with a career-high 9.325. Adderly was the top finishing Buckeye on vault with 9.475 points, finishing tied for fourth and Monahan was tied for seventh (9.4). On parallel bars, Adderly finished tied for third (9.0). Five Buckeyes placed in the Top 10 on high bar. Ronald Ferris (So., Austintown, Pa.) and Monahan finished second (9.575) and third (9.525), respectively. Finishing sixth and seventh were Ito (9.3) and Adderly (9.225). Jamey Houle (Sr., Enfield, Conn.) scored a season-high 9.150 to finish ninth. Monahan led the all-around competition, posting a 55.950.
