COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State (4-7, 1-2 American Lacrosse Conference) women’s lacrosse squad will travel to Nashville, Tenn. to face 10th-ranked Vanderbilt (7-3, 2-1) Sunday at the Vanderbilt Lacrosse Complex at 1 p.m. The Buckeyes are coming off a 14-6 home loss to third-ranked Notre Dame last Saturday while the Commodores won 12-8 at North Carolina and 20-5 at Davidson last week. Vanderbilt will host Ohio University Friday prior to playing Ohio State.
A LOOK AT OHIO STATE
Sue Stimmel coaches the Buckeyes. Ohio State is 4-7 overall and 1-2 in the American Lacrosse Conference. The Buckeyes suffered a 14-6 home loss last Saturday to third-ranked Notre Dame. Ohio State’s Regina Oliver (Jr., Pottstown, Pa.) is the team leader in points with 19 (15 goals, 4 assists). Caroline Weatherill (Sr., Malvern, Pa.) ranks second with 16 (13 goals, 3 assists). Ashley Evans (Jr., Ellicott City, Md.) is third in points with 15 from 14 goals and one assist. Oliver leads the team in ground balls (41) and caused turnovers (34). Evans is second in ground balls with 30 and Kathryn Kozlakowski (Jr., Towson, Md.) is third with 28. Kelly Cook (Sr., Downingtown, Pa.) is second in caused turnover with 17 and Evans is third with 13. Weatherill leads the team with 16 draw controls with Oliver second with 12. Kim Hastings (So., Sewickley, Pa.) and Taryn Bowen (Sr., Columbus, Ohio) have been splitting time in goal. Hastings has started all 11 matches and has a 4-7 record. She has made 62 saves (.484) and has a 10.83 goals against average. Bowen has made 41 saves (.446) and has an 10.83 goals against average.
A LOOK AT VANDERBILT
Cathy Swezey coaches the 10th-ranked Commodores. Vanderbilt has an overall record of 7-3 and is 2-1 in the ALC prior to its game Friday against Ohio University. Leading the team in points in Lauren Peck with 38 from a team-high 31 goals and eight assists. Michelle Allen ranks second with 36 with 21 goals and 15 assists. Jess Roguski is third in points with 30 with 25 goals and five assists. Allen has a team-high 19 ground balls with Christiana Serle, Bridget Morris and Ashley Bastinelli tied for second with 16. Serle is the team leader in caused turnovers with 14 with Allen second with 13. Roguski has a team-high 26 draw controls with Allen second with 20. In goal, Brooke Shinaberry has played in eight game with five starts. She has a 5-1 record and has a .455 saves percentage. Shinaberry has an 8.47 goals against average. Ashley Bastinelli has played in seven games with five starts. She has an 2-2 record with a .425 saves percentage. Bastinelli has a 10.62 goals against average.
VANDERBILT-OHIO STATE SERIES HISTORY
Vanderbilt has a 7-1 lead in the series with Ohio State. In matches played in Columbus, the Commodores are 2-1. Ohio State lost the first three games in the series. All three were played at Vanderbilt. In OSU’s first-ever game in 1996, Vanderbilt won, 21-7. The Commodores won, 14-7, in 1997 and 11-7 in 1998. Playing in Columbus, Ohio State won, 12-11, in 1999. Vanderbilt won at home, 9-7 in 2000. The last three games in the series have all been won by Vanderbilt by one goal. In Columbus in 2001, the Commodores won, 10-9. At Vanderbilt in 2002, Ohio State lost, 12-11. Last season in Columbus, Vanderbilt won, 12-11, in two overtimes.
THE LAST TIME: VANDERBILT 12, OHIO STATE 11
VU opened the scoring with a Lauren Peck goal at 5:27. OSU’s Shannon Wilson responded at 5:41 with an assist from Tracey Bounds. Vanderbilt made it 2-1 on a free position shot by Michelle Allen at 9:50. KC Carter tied the game at two at 10:21 on an assist from Regina Oliver. OSU took a 3-2 lead on Carter’s second goal at 10:46 with an assist to Ashley Evans. Bounds scored OSU’s next two goals, the first at 14:44, unassisted and the second at 17:43 on a free position shot. A Carter goal, with an assist to Bounds, came at 27:54 to close out the half. VU’s Jeannie Crawley scored at 33:11 from a Kelly Devlin pass to open the scoring in the second half. Crawley scored again at 37:58 to cut OSU’s lead to 6-4. VU’s goal by Peck at 40:58, assisted by Crawley, and a Jess Roguski goal at 46:32 tied the game at six. OSU regained the lead at 7-6 with an unassisted Oliver goal at 47:25. OSU’s Wilson scored at 47:57, with an assist from Bounds, and at 48:32, unassisted. Vanderbilt responded at 50:35 with an Allen, assisted by Tara Schmucker. OSU went ahead, 10-7, with an Ashley Evans goal at 52:09, assisted by Oliver. VU’s Mary McCeney, on a free position shot, scored at 53:23. Allen made it 10-9 on a free position shot at 54:19. Peck’s goal, assisted by Allen, at 59:43 tied the game at 10, sending the contest into overtime. In the first overtime period, Vanderbilt worked for a final shot and scored at 62:55 by Crawley. The Commodores attempted to run down the clock, but lost possession with 40 seconds left in the period. With 20 seconds left in the overtime (65:40), Wilson tied the score at 11 off a Bounds’ pass. The game moved to the sudden-victory second overtime period and McCeney scored the game winner from Allen at 66:58 to secure the win.
BUCKEYES DROP 14-6 DECISION TO NOTRE DAME
Ohio State fell to third-ranked Notre Dame, 14-6, at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. The Irish opened the game with 10 consecutive goals enroute to a 10-1 halftime lead. OSU outscored Notre Dame, 5-4 in the second half. Meredith Simon, Crysti Foote and Lauren Fischer scored three goals each for Notre Dame with Abby Owens and Kassen Delano adding two each. OSU’s Ashley Evans had a team-high three goals for the Buckeyes with Regina Oliver, Caroline Weatherill and Kely Laws adding a goal each. In goal for Notre Dame, Carol Dixon picked up the win while recording 14 saves. OSU’s Kim Hastings started the game and played the first half. She gave up 10 goals and made four saves. Buckeye Taryn Bowen played the second half and made five saves while giving up four goals.
EVANS SCORING STREAK AT TEN
With a team-high three goals against Notre Dame, Ashley Evans extended her goal scoring streak to 10 games. Her three goals equals her career-high set at Cornell last season.
HASTINGS AND BOWEN SHARING THE GOAL
Kim Hastings and Taryn Bowen are sharing the goalie duties for the Buckeyes. Hastings has started all 11 games and has a 4-7 record in playing 365 minutes. Bowen has seen action in all 11 games and has 282 minutes. Hastings has a .484 save percentage (with 62 saves) and has a 10.83 goals against average. Bowen has 41 saves (.446) had has an 10.83 goals against average.
OLIVER TIES FOR FIFTH IN CAREER GOALS
With her 86th career goal in the Notre Dame game, Regina Oliver has moved into a tie for fifth in Ohio State career goals. She has tied Lauren Cochran (1999-02). Oliver is one goal behind No. 4 Celeste Cianfrani (1998-01) with 87.
COOK TIES FOR NINTH IN CAREER GROUND BALLS
Kelly Cook collected four ground balls against Notre Dame last Saturday and has moved into a tie for ninth on the Ohio State career list with 117. She is tied with Megan Mirick (1999-02). Cook moved past Tracey Bounds (2000-03) who had 115. In career caused turnovers, Cook ranks eighth on the OSU career list with 52.
OSU FACES PENN STATE ON CSTV SCHEDULE
CSTV (College Sports Television) selected the Friday, April 23 Ohio State-Penn State game as part of their 20-event lacrosse schedule. The 7 p.m. game will be one of five regular season women’s games to be carried by CSTV. They will also telecast all three NCAA women’s championship games.
OHIO STATE REGULAR SEASON ROAD WIN STREAK STOPPED AT TEN
With a 10-9 overtime win at Stanford, Ohio State extended its regular season road-winning streak to 10 games. The streak ended two days later with a 10-6 loss at California. OSU won all eight regular season road games last season including wins at Penn State and Notre Dame. The streak included a 2002 victory at Ohio.
OHIO STATE, THE DEFENDING AMERICAN LACROSSE CONFERENCE CHAMPIONS
At the end of the 2003 ALC season, Ohio State and Penn State were tied with 5-1 records. Based upon the league bylaws, Ohio State’s 10-9 win at Penn State made the Buckeyes the outright champion of the conference. They bylaw was written to select the league’s automatic berth into the NCAA Championship, which takes effect this season.
BUCKEYES PICKED TO WIN ALC CHAMPIONSHIP
Ohio State, the defending American Lacrosse Conference Champion, has been picked as the preseason favorite to win the league championship by a vote of the conference coaches. OSU received four of the seven first place votes and 46 total points. Penn State was ranked second with two first place votes and 43 points. The Buckeyes and Nittany Lions finished the 2003 conference season with 5-1 records but Ohio State won the championship based upon the bylaws of the conference.
OLIVER AND CARTER NAMED TO ALC PRESEASON ALL-CONFERENCE TEAM
By a vote of the conference coaches, Ohio State midfielders Regina Oliver (Jr., Pottstown, Pa.) and KC Carter (So., Birchrunville, Pa.) have been named to the 12-player 2004 American Lacrosse Conference Preseason All-Conference Team. Oliver was further honored as the 2004 Preseason Player of the Year. She was the 2003 ALC Player of the Year and the 2002 Rookie of the Year. Carter was the 2003 Rookie of the Year.
JESSE OWENS MEMORIAL STADIUM, HOME OF THE BUCKEYES
The 8,000-seat Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium arguably is one of the finest multi-sport facilities in the country, hosting track and field and lacrosse in the spring and soccer in the fall. Over the last two years, the Buckeyes are 13-4 (.765) at the facility.
HEAD COACH Sue Stimmel
Sue Stimmel is in her ninth season as the head coach for the Ohio State women’s lacrosse team. A 1984 graduate of Temple University, Stimmel is the only coach that the Buckeye program has had. She spent six years has the head coach of Denison prior to coming to Ohio State. Stimmel is 72-57 (.558) at Ohio State and is 148-75 (.664) in her 15-year career. The 2003 season was her most successful with a program-high 14 wins, finishing the regular season ranked 11th nationally and making the school’s second consecutive appearance in the NCAA Championship, advancing to the quarterfinals. Her squad won the 2003 American Lacrosse Conference Championship and she was named the ALC Coach of the Year and was later named the 2003 Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association Regional Coach of the Year.
NEXT WEEK FOR OHIO STATE
Ohio State closed out the home schedule with a three-game home stand. The Buckeyes will host 18th-ranked Penn State Friday, April 23 at 7 p.m. in a match that will be broadcast line by CSTV (College Sports Television). OSU then hosts Lafayette Sunday, April 25 at 11 a.m. The Buckeyes then close out the home schedule with a Wednesday, April 28 game with Duquesne at 6 p.m.
