COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State (1-2, 0-1 American Lacrosse Conference) women’s lacrosse squad continues conference play with a road contest at Johns Hopkins (2-0, 1-0), Sunday, March 14 at Noon. The Buckeyes are coming off a 9-6 loss to No. 20 Northwestern last week, while John Hopkins won, 14-7, at George Washington last week.
A LOOK AT OHIO STATE
Sue Stimmel coaches the 19th-ranked Buckeyes. Ohio State is 1-2 overall and 0-1 in the American Lacrosse Conference. The Buckeyes suffered a second straight loss last Sunday, dropping a 9-6 decision to No. 20 Northwestern in OSU’s home opener. Ohio State’s Regina Oliver (Jr., Pottstown, Pa.) is the team leader in points with five (five goals) with Caroline Weatherill (Sr., Malvern, Pa.) and Natale Miller (Fr., West Chester, Pa.) tied for second with four each. Weatherill has three goals and an assist while Miller has four goals. Oliver is the team leader in ground balls with 17 with Kelyn Laws (Fr., Ellicott City, Md.) second with 14 and Ashley Evans (Jr., Ellicott City, Md.) third with 13. Oliver has a team-high 15 caused turnovers with Kelly Cook (Sr., Downingtown, Pa.) second with six. Oliver is the team leader in draw controls with six. Weatherill and Evans have four each. Kim Hastings (So., Sewickley, Pa.) and Taryn Bowen (Sr., Columbus, Ohio) have been splitting time in goal. Hastings started all three matches and has a 1-2 record. She has made 18 saves (.514) and has a 9.19 goals against average. Bowen has made seven saves (.389) and has an 8.80 goals against average.
A LOOK AT JOHNS HOPKINS
Janine Tucker coaches the 17th-ranked Blue Jays. John Hopkins is 2-0 on the season and 1-0 in the ALC. The Blue Jays won 14-7 at George Washington on March 4. They host Towson Tuesday and Ohio University Friday prior to hosting OSU Sunday. Heidi Pearce leads the team in points with 11. She has six goals and a team-high five assists. Mary Key ranks second in points with 10 with a team-high eight goals and two assists. Lacey-Leigh Hentz leads the team in ground balls (8), draw controls (5) and caused turnovers (7). Kate Gilland ranks second in ground balls (7) and caused turnovers (5) with Pearce second in draw controls with four. Lauren Riddick has started in goal in both contests for the Blue Jays. She has recorded seven saves (.412) and has a 5.41 goals against average.
JOHNS HOPKINS-OHIO STATE SERIES HISTORY
The Ohio State-Johns Hopkins series is tied at 1-1 with each team winning on its home field. The Blue Jays won, 11-10, in Baltimore in 2002 and Ohio State won, 9-6, in Columbus last season.
THE LAST GAME AGAINST JOHNS HOPKINS
#18 Ohio State 9, #15 Johns Hopkins 6 – March 14, 2003 – Ohio State, with two goals each from Regina Oliver and Alexia Vogler and single tallies from Shannon Wilson, Noemi Hites, Caroline Weatherill and Tracey Bounds defeated 15th-ranked Johns Hopkins, 9-6. The Buckeyes had a 5-1 lead at halftime and moved to 6-1 early in the second half. The Blue Jays rallied with four consecutive goals to cut the OSU lead to one at 6-5. A Weatherill goal at 47:50 was the game winner, giving the Buckeyes a 7-5 lead. Vogler’s second goal of the game made it 8-5. Johns Hopkins cut the lead to 8-6 at 52:36 with a goal by Heidi Pearce. A Buckeye goal by Bounds ended the scoring at 9-6, Ohio State. In goal for OSU, Erin Forquer won her third game of the season and recorded 15 saves. Jen McDonald had 15 saves for Johns Hopkins.
#15 OHIO STATE FALLS, 9-6, TO #20 NORTHWESTERN
Ohio State lost its home opener, 9-6, to 20th-ranked Northwestern (3-1, 2-0) Sunday afternoon at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. Northwestern scored the first six goals of the game, all coming in the first half. Albrecht opened the scoring for the Wildcats with 13 minutes gone in the half. Donna McCann made it 2-0 at 16:52. Kjellman’s goal at 17:08 and Albrechts’ second goal at 19:12 made the Wildcat lead 4-0. Two goals by Glassanos at 22:22 and 28:09 closed out the scoring in the half with Northwestern taking a 6-0 lead. Ohio State opened the scoring in the second half with a goal by Brandie Williams at 30:37. OSU’s Amy Tulk made it 6-2 with a score at 38:32. The Wildcats countered with two goals, the first by Lindsey Finocchiaro at 40:31 and by Kjellman at 41:55 to bring the lead back to six at 8-2. Buckeye Regina Oliver scored at 42:41 to cut the margin to 8-3 but Albrecht’s third goal at 45:53 put the lead at 9-3. Ohio State then scored at 47:44 with a goal by Ashley Evans and another from Melissa Sands at 55:35 to cut the margin to 9-5. Northwestern had a goal disallowed due to an illegal stick at 56:35. OSU’s Natale Miller closed out the scoring with a goal at 59:05 giving Northwestern a 9-6 victory In goal for Northwestern, Ashley Gersuk recorded 12 saves for the Wildcats while giving up six goals. For Ohio State, Kim Hastings started in goal and played the first half (30:00). She had six saves. Buckeye Taryn Bowen was in goal for the second half (30:00) and gave up three goals and had one save.
OLIVER BECOMES OSU’S CAREER CAUSED TURNOVER LEADER
Regina Oliver had eight caused turnovers in the game against Northwestern and raised her career total to 119 to become the OSU career leader. She passed Kimberly Lowe (2000-03) with 112 and previous leader Shannon Wilson (2000-03) with 116 to become the Buckeyes’ all-time leader.
OLIVER’S GOAL TIES HER FOR EIGHTH IN OSU CAREER POINTS
With her goal against Northwestern, Regina Oliver moved into a tie for eighth on the Ohio State career points list with 101. She has 76 goals and 25 assists in her career. Oliver is tied with Lauren Cochran (1999-02) with 86 goals and 15 assists.
WEATHERILL NOW EIGHTH IN CAREER DRAW CONTROLS
Caroline Weatherill recorded a draw control against Northwestern to give her 36 in her career and move her to eighth on the OSU career list. She had been tied for eighth with Tracey Bounds (2000-03) with 35.
OSU 19TH IN IWLCA POLL THIS WEEK
After the 9-6 loss to Northwestern, Ohio State has dropped to 19th in the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association weekly poll. The Buckeyes received 48 points.
OSU FACES PENN STATE ON CSTV SCHEDULE
CSTV (College Sports Television) selected the Friday, April 23 Ohio State-Penn State game as part of their 20-event lacrosse schedule. The 7 p.m. game will be one of five regular season women’s games to be carried by CSTV. They will also telecast all three NCAA women’s championship games.
OHIO STATE REGULAR SEASON ROAD WIN STREAK STOPPED AT TEN
With a 10-9 overtime win at Stanford, Ohio State extended its regular season road winning streak to 10 games. The streak ended two days later with a 10-6 loss at California. OSU won all eight regular season road games last season including wins at Penn State and Notre Dame. The streak included a 2002 victory at Ohio.
OHIO STATE, THE DEFENDING AMERICAN LACROSSE CONFERENCE CHAMPIONS
At the end of the 2003 ALC season, Ohio State and Penn State were tied with 5-1 records. Based upon the league bylaws, Ohio State’s 10-9 win at Penn State made the Buckeyes the outright champion of the conference. They bylaw was written to select the league’s automatic berth into the NCAA Championship, which takes effect this season.
BUCKEYES PICKED TO WIN ALC CHAMPIONSHIP
Ohio State, the defending American Lacrosse Conference Champion, has been picked as the preseason favorite to win the league championship by a vote of the conference coaches. OSU received four of the seven first place votes and 46 total points. Penn State was ranked second with two first place votes and 43 points. The Buckeyes and Nittany Lions finished the 2003 conference season with 5-1 records but Ohio State won the championship based upon the bylaws of the conference.
OLIVER AND CARTER NAMED TO ALC PRESEASON ALL-CONFERENCE TEAM
By a vote of the conference coaches, Ohio State midfielders Regina Oliver (Jr., Pottstown, Pa.) and KC Carter (So., Birchrunville, Pa.) have been named to the 12-player 2004 American Lacrosse Conference Preseason All-Conference Team. Oliver was further honored as the 2004 Preseason Player of the Year. She was the 2003 ALC Player of the Year and the 2002 Rookie of the Year. Carter was the 2003 Rookie of the Year.
JESSE OWENS MEMORIAL STADIUM, HOME OF THE BUCKEYES
The 8,000-seat Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium arguably is one of the finest multi-sport facilities in the country, hosting track and field and lacrosse in the spring and soccer in the fall. Over the last two years, the Buckeyes are 11-3 (.786) at the facility.
HEAD COACH Sue Stimmel
Sue Stimmel is in her ninth season as the head coach for the Ohio State women’s lacrosse team. A 1984 graduate of Temple University, Stimmel is the only coach that the Buckeye program has had. She spent six years has the head coach of Denison prior to coming to Ohio State. Stimmel is 69-52 (.570) at Ohio State and is 145-70 (.674) in her 15-year career. The 2003 season was her most successful with a program-high 14 wins, finishing the regular season ranked 11th nationally and making the school’s second consecutive appearance in the NCAA Championship, advancing to the quarterfinals. Her squad won the 2003 American Lacrosse Conference Championship and she was named the ALC Coach of the Year and was later named the 2003 Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association Regional Coach of the Year.
NEXT WEEK FOR OHIO STATE
The Buckeyes return home to Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium for a noon Saturday contest against Richmond. Ohio State then faces Cornell Tuesday, March 23 in a game played at Vanderbilt.
