COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 15th-ranked Ohio State (1-2 overall, 0-1 American Lacrosse Conference) women’s lacrosse team lost its home opener, 9-6, to 20th-ranked Northwestern (3-1, 2-0) Sunday afternoon at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. The Wildcats were paced by Sarah Albrecht’s three goals with Kristen Kjellman and Laura Glassanos adding two goals each.
Northwestern scored the first six goals of the game, all coming in the first half. Albrecht opened the scoring for the Wildcats with 13 minutes gone in the half. Donna McCann made it 2-0 at 16:52. Kjellman’s goal at 17:08 and Albrechts’ second goal at 19:12 made the Wildcat lead 4-0. Two goals by Glassanos at 22:22 and 28:09 closed out the scoring in the half with Northwestern taking a 6-0 lead.
Ohio State opened the scoring in the second half with a goal by Brandie Williams (Jr., Hatboro, Pa.) at 30:37. OSU’s Amy Tulk (Sr., West Chester, Pa.) made it 6-2 with a score at 38:32. The Wildcats countered with two goals, the first by Lindsey Finocchiaro at 40:31 and by Kjellman at 41:55 to bring the lead back to six at 8-2. Buckeye Regina Oliver (Jr., Pottstown, Pa.) scored at 42:41 to cut the margin to 8-3 but Albrecht’s third goal at 45:53 put the lead at 9-3. Ohio State then scored at 47:44 with a goal by Ashley Evans (Jr., Ellicott City, Md.) and another from Melissa Sands (Jr., Fallston, Md.) at 55:35 to cut the margin to 9-5. Northwestern had a goal disallowed due to an illegal stick at 56:35. OSU’s Natale Miller (Fr., West Chester, Pa.) closed out the scoring with a goal at 59:05 giving Northwestern a 9-6 victory
In goal for Northwestern, Ashley Gersuk recorded 12 saves for the Wildcats while giving up six goals. For Ohio State, Kim Hastings (So., Sewickley, Pa.) started in goal and played the first half (30:00). She had six saves. Buckeye Taryn Bowen (Sr., Columbus, Ohio) was in goal for the second half (30:00) and gave up three goals and had one save.
Ohio State continues league action next Sunday when it travels to Johns Hopkins for a noon contest.
