COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State (3-5, 0-3 American Lacrosse Conference) women’s lacrosse squad plays its fourth consecutive game on the road when it plays at Virginia Tech (3-4) Friday, April 2 at 4 p.m. The Buckeyes then return home to face conference opponent Davidson (3-7, 0-3) at 1 p.m. Sunday, April 4. The Buckeyes are coming off back-to-back losses at the Aeropostale Women’s Lacrosse Challenge at North Carolina. OSU lost, 16-8, to No. 14 North Carolina and 14-4, to No. 8 Maryland.
A LOOK AT OHIO STATE
Sue Stimmel coaches the Buckeyes. Ohio State is 3-5 overall and 0-2 in the American Lacrosse Conference. The Buckeyes suffered road losses last weekend to No. 14 North Carolina, 16-8, and to No. 8 Maryland, 14-4, in matches played at North Carolina. Ohio State’s Caroline Weatherill (Sr., Malvern, Pa.) is the team leader in points with 13 (11 goals, 2 assists). Regina Oliver (Jr., Pottstown, Pa.) ranks second with 12 (10 goals, 2 assists). Amy Tulk (Sr., West Chester, Pa.) ranks third in points with 11 from nine goals and two assists. Oliver leads the team in ground balls (30) and caused turnovers (24). Ashley Evans (Jr., Ellicott City, Md.) is second in ground balls with 24. Kelly Cook (Sr., Downingtown, Pa.) and Evans are tied for second in caused turnovers with 10. Weatherill leads the team with 14 draw controls with Oliver second with eight. Kim Hastings (So., Sewickley, Pa.) and Taryn Bowen (Sr., Columbus, Ohio) have been splitting time in goal. Hastings has started all eight matches and has a 3-5 record. She has made 49 saves (.516) and has a 10.02 goals against average. Bowen has made 29 saves (.403) and has a 12.26 goals against average. A LOOK AT VIRGINIA TECH
Tami Riley coaches the Hokies. Virginia Tech has an overall record of 3-4. The Hokies have lost the last three games including a 12-11 defeat at Northwestern last Sunday. Kate Threadgold leads the team in points with 29. She has team-highs of 20 goals and nine assists. Stephanie Jones is second in points with 24 with 17 goals and seven assists. Katie Boyle is the team leader in ground balls with 17. Lindsey Welch ranks second with 15. Welch has a team-high 18 draw controls with Jones second with 16. Welch is also the team leader in caused turnovers with 12. Boyle stands second with 11. In goal, Jamie McGraw has played all seven games. She has recorded 88 saves (.497) and has a 12.71 goals against average.
VIRGINIA TECH-OHIO STATE SERIES HISTORY
Virginia Tech has a 6-2 lead in the series with Ohio State. The Hokies have won all four games played in Blacksburg. Virginia Tech won the first five meetings. The series began in Blacksburg with a 14-4 Hokie win in 1996. They won, 8-5, in Columbus in 1997. At Virginia Tech in 1998 they won, 10-8. The 1999 game, played in Columbus, was a 9-8 Virginia Tech victory. In 2000, the Hokies won, 13-10, in Blacksburg. Ohio State won its first game of the series in 2001 by an 11-5 score. The Hokies captured a 16-14 win in Blacksburg in 2002. Last season, Ohio State won in Columbus, 14-5.
A LOOK AT DAVIDSON
Mary Schwartz coaches the Wildcats. Davidson is 3-7 overall and is 0-3 in the American Lacrosse Conference. The Wildcats play at Ohio University Friday. Lindsay Frank is the team leader in points with 27. She has 20 goals and a team-high seven assists. Eloise Grose ranks second in points with 26 with a team-high 21 goals and five assists. Frank and Melissa Gilbert are co-leaders on the squad in groundballs with 19. Frank, Grose and Gilbert have 14 draw controls each to lead the squad. Brandon Jacob leads the team in caused turnovers with 10. Alicia Zahn and Gilbert rank second with nine each. Becca Nussbaum has played in goal in nine games with a 3-6 record. She has 87 saves (.431) and a 15.36 goals against average. Leslie Smith has played in four games and has a 0-1 record. She has nine saves (.290) and an 8.90 goals against average.
DAVIDSON-OHIO STATE SERIES HISTORY
Ohio State leads the series with Davidson, 5-2. The Buckeyes have won the last five meetings and the last three played in Columbus. The Wildcats won the first meeting in 1996, played at Davidson, 10-8. Their second win came in 1997, in Columbus, by an 8-6 score. OSU’s first win was in 1998, a 16-7 victory at Davidson. In Columbus, the Buckeyes won, 10-9, in overtime in 1999. OSU won, 13-10, in 2000 and, 13-3, in 2002 in games played at Ohio State. Last season, OSU won, 17-3, at Davidson.
NORTH CAROLINA DEFEATS OSU, 16-8
Ohio State lost a 16-8 decision to No. 14 North Carolina in the first day of play at the Aeropostale Women’s Lacrosse Challenge, hosted by North Carolina. OSU’s Noemi Hites (Sr., Pleasanton, Calif.) scored a team-high three goals for the Buckeyes with Kely Laws (Fr., Ellicott City, Md.) adding two. Melissa McCarthy had four goals and one assist for North Carolina with Brooke Dieringer adding three goals and an assist for the Tar Heels while Beth Ames and Allison Higgins had three goals each. The Tar Hells held an 8-4 lead at the end of the first half and exploded for six straight goals in the second half to seal the victory. OSU’s Kim Hastings played most of the first half in goal, giving up eight goals. Taryn Bowen finished out the first half and the rest of the game with seven saves while giving up eight goals. Tar Heel Kristen Horday played the first half for North Carolina making four saves and giving up four goals. Katelyn Hoffman played the second half and had four saves and gave up four goals
MARYLAND DEFEATS OHIO STATE, 14-4
Ohio State lost, 14-4, to No. 8 Maryland in Chapel Hill, N.C. at the Aeropostale Women’s Lacrosse Challenge. The Buckeye goals were scored by Ashley Evans, Kelyn Laws, Andrea Fischer and KC Carter. Kelly Coppedge had five goals for Maryland with Delia Cox adding three and Jessica Dorney, two. Maryland built up a 6-1 lead in the first half with OSU’s Evans scoring with 1:05 left in the half. The Buckeyes were out scored 8-3 in the second half with Buckeye goals coming from Laws, Fischer and Carter. In goal for Ohio State, Kim Hastings played the first half making eight saves while giving up six goals in the loss. Taryn Bowen was in goal for the second half making two saves while giving up eight goals. Maryland’s Kirah Miles took the win while making six saves.
WEATHERILL HAS OUTSTANDING GAME AGAINST CORNELL
Coming off the bench, Caroline Weatherill was key to OSU’s win over Cornell. Her three consecutive goals in the first half broke a 3-3 tie to put OSU ahead for good. Weatherill scored six goals in the contest on seven shots, including a free position score. She also had three ground balls, three draw controls and one caused turnover in the victory.
CARTER NOW SEVENTH IN CAREER DRAW CONTROLS
With two draw controls against North Carolina and one against Maryland, KC Carter now has 41 in her career and has moved to seventh on the OSU career list. She had been tied for seventh is Celeste Cianfrani (1998-01) with 38. Carter stands five draw controls behind teammate Caroline Weatherill who has 46.
HITES RECORDS CAREER-HIGH TWO ASSISTS AGAINST THE SPIDERS
Noemi Hites recorded her first points of the season against Richmond with two assists, both coming on goals by Natale Miller. Her first assist gave OSU a 3-1 lead in the first half and her second pushed the OSU lead to 9-3 in the second half.
HASTINGS AND BOWEN SHARING THE GOAL
Kim Hastings and Taryn Bowen are sharing the goalie duties for the Buckeyes. Hastings has started all eight games and has a 3-5 record in playing 275 minutes. Bowen has seen action in all eight games and has 210 minutes. Hastings has a .516 save percentage (with 49 saves) and has a 10.02 goals against average. Bowen has 29 saves (.403) had has a 12.26 goals against average.
OLIVER NOW SEVENTH IN CAREER POINTS
With her three goals against Richmond, and two goals and two assists against Cornell Regina Oliver now has 108 career points (79 goals, 25 assists) and has moved into seventh place on the OSU career points list. She had been tied for eighth with Lauren Cochran (1999-02) with 101 points (86-15) and has passed Erin Andersen (1998-01) with 107 (83-24).
OLIVER TIED FOR THIRD IN CAREER GROUND BALLS
Regina Oliver has moved into a tie for third on the OSU career ground balls list with her three against Richmond and six against Cornell last week. She now has 140 in her career and is tied with Trisha Miller (1999-02). Oliver had been tied for fifth at 133 with Lauren Cochran (1999-02) and moved past Celeste Cianfrani (1998-01) with 134.
OSU FACES PENN STATE ON CSTV SCHEDULE
CSTV (College Sports Television) selected the Friday, April 23 Ohio State-Penn State game as part of their 20-event lacrosse schedule. The 7 p.m. game will be one of five regular season women’s games to be carried by CSTV. They will also telecast all three NCAA women’s championship games.
OHIO STATE REGULAR SEASON ROAD WIN STREAK STOPPED AT TEN
With a 10-9 overtime win at Stanford, Ohio State extended its regular season road-winning streak to 10 games. The streak ended two days later with a 10-6 loss at California. OSU won all eight regular season road games last season including wins at Penn State and Notre Dame. The streak included a 2002 victory at Ohio.
OHIO STATE, THE DEFENDING AMERICAN LACROSSE CONFERENCE CHAMPIONS
At the end of the 2003 ALC season, Ohio State and Penn State were tied with 5-1 records. Based upon the league bylaws, Ohio State’s 10-9 win at Penn State made the Buckeyes the outright champion of the conference. They bylaw was written to select the league’s automatic berth into the NCAA Championship, which takes effect this season.
BUCKEYES PICKED TO WIN ALC CHAMPIONSHIP
Ohio State, the defending American Lacrosse Conference Champion, has been picked as the preseason favorite to win the league championship by a vote of the conference coaches. OSU received four of the seven first place votes and 46 total points. Penn State was ranked second with two first place votes and 43 points. The Buckeyes and Nittany Lions finished the 2003 conference season with 5-1 records but Ohio State won the championship based upon the bylaws of the conference.
OLIVER AND CARTER NAMED TO ALC PRESEASON ALL-CONFERENCE TEAM
By a vote of the conference coaches, Ohio State midfielders Regina Oliver (Jr., Pottstown, Pa.) and KC Carter (So., Birchrunville, Pa.) have been named to the 12-player 2004 American Lacrosse Conference Preseason All-Conference Team. Oliver was further honored as the 2004 Preseason Player of the Year. She was the 2003 ALC Player of the Year and the 2002 Rookie of the Year. Carter was the 2003 Rookie of the Year.
JESSE OWENS MEMORIAL STADIUM, HOME OF THE BUCKEYES
The 8,000-seat Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium arguably is one of the finest multi-sport facilities in the country, hosting track and field and lacrosse in the spring and soccer in the fall. Over the last two years, the Buckeyes are 12-3 (.800) at the facility.
HEAD COACH Sue Stimmel
Sue Stimmel is in her ninth season as the head coach for the Ohio State women’s lacrosse team. A 1984 graduate of Temple University, Stimmel is the only coach that the Buckeye program has had. She spent six years has the head coach of Denison prior to coming to Ohio State. Stimmel is 71-55 (.563) at Ohio State and is 147-73 (.668) in her 15-year career. The 2003 season was her most successful with a program-high 14 wins, finishing the regular season ranked 11th nationally and making the school’s second consecutive appearance in the NCAA Championship, advancing to the quarterfinals. Her squad won the 2003 American Lacrosse Conference Championship and she was named the ALC Coach of the Year and was later named the 2003 Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association Regional Coach of the Year.
