COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 18th-ranked Ohio State (3-3) women’s lacrosse squad will travel to Chapel Hill, N.C. to play in the Aeropostale Women’s Lacrosse Challenge. The Buckeyes will face 14th-ranked North Carolina (4-3) at 7 p.m., Friday, March 26. OSU then plays eighth-ranked Maryland (6-2) at 1 p.m., Sunday, March 28. In other tournament games, Penn State (1-5) plays Maryland at 5 p.m. Friday and North Carolina at 3 p.m., Sunday. Ohio State is coming off back-to-back wins in the last week. OSU defeated Richmond, 10-7, at home and won a 14-11 decision against Cornell Tuesday in a game played at Vanderbilt.
A LOOK AT OHIO STATE
Sue Stimmel coaches the Buckeyes. Ohio State is 3-3 overall and 0-2 in the American Lacrosse Conference. The Buckeyes upset No. 18 Richmond, 10-7, at home last Saturday to stop a three-game losing streak. On the road, OSU defeated Cornell, 14-11, in a game played in Nashville, Tenn. Ohio State’s Caroline Weatherill (Sr., Malvern, Pa.) and Regina Oliver (Jr., Pottstown, Pa.) are co-leaders in points with 12. Each has a team-high 10 goals and two assists. Amy Tulk (Sr., West Chester, Pa.) ranks third in points with 10 from eight goals and two assists. Oliver leads the team in ground balls (30) and caused turnovers (24). Ashley Evans (Jr., Ellicott City, Md.) is second in ground balls with 21. Kelly Cook (Sr., Downingtown, Pa.) ranks second in caused turnovers with nine with Mindy Kittle (So., Hockessin, Del.) third with eight. Weatherill leads the team with 11 draw controls with Oliver second with eight. Kim Hastings (So., Sewickley, Pa.) and Taryn Bowen (Sr., Columbus, Ohio) have been splitting time in goal. Hastings has started all six matches and has a 3-3 record. She has made 41 saves (.562) and has an 8.65 goals against average. Bowen has made 20 saves (.426) and has an 11.25 goals against average.
A LOOK AT NORTH CAROLINA
Jenny Slingluff Levy coaches the 14th-ranked Tar Heels. North Carolina has a 4-3 overall record and has lost its last two games, a 7-6 double-overtime loss to No. 2 Duke and a 16-9 loss at Virginia last Saturday. Beth Ames and Allison Higgins share team-high honors with 15 points each. Ames has a team-high 15 goals while Higgins has 11 goals and four assists. Jess Allen ranks third in points with 14 from nine goals and a team-high five assists. Allen and Jenn Cook are the team co-leaders in ground balls with 16. Meghan Kelly is third with 13. Ilsa Leon has a team-high 10 caused turnovers with Cook second with nine. In goal, Katelyn Hoffman has played in six games and has an 8.50 goals against average and recorded 45 saves (.570). Kristen Hordy has seen action in five games and has a 7.88 goals against average and has 38 saves (.603).
NORTH CAROLINA-OHIO STATE SERIES HISTORY
North Carolina leads the series with Ohio State, 5-1. The series began in 1998 with a 15-5 UNC win at Johns Hopkins. The Tar Heels won in 1999, 19-5, in a match played in Baltimore, Md. In 2000, North Carolina won, 13-4, in the only match played in Chapel Hill, The Tar Heels won, 18-6 in 2001 at Penn State and in 2002, 12-7, at Maryland. In Columbus last season, Ohio State won, 10-8.
A LOOK AT MARYLAND
Cindy Timchal coaches the eighth-ranked Terrapins. Maryland has a 6-2 overall record going into this week. They defeated Dartmouth, 11-8, Tuesday. Maryland will face Penn State Friday prior to playing Ohio State Sunday. Prior to the Dartmouth game, Kelly Coppedge had a team-high 40 points with team-highs of 27 goals and 13 assists. Delia Cox is second in points with 21. She has 19 goals and two assists. Coppedge is the team leader in ground balls (28), draw controls (17) and caused turnovers (13). Kirah Miles ranks second in ground balls with 22. Laura Warren is second in draw controls with 14. Tess McLeod, with 11 caused turnovers, ranks second. In goal, Miles has all seven starts and is 5-2. She has 57 saves (.538) and a 7.57 goals against average. In three appearances, Kate Capelle has recorded three saves (.500) and has a 5.72 goals against average.
MARYLAND-OHIO STATE SERIES HISTORY
Maryland has a 2-1 lead in the series with Ohio State. The Terrapins won the first meeting, in 2001, 19-2 in a match played at Penn State. The Buckeyes won, 12-11, in 2002 in College Park. Last season, in Columbus, Maryland won, 10-5.
OHIO STATE 10, RICHMOND 7
Ohio State, with three goals from Regina Oliver and two each from Kelyn Laws and Natale Miller upset No. 18 Richmond, 10-7, in Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. The Buckeyes held a 5-2 lead at the half and took the lead to 9-3 with 17 minutes left in the game. Richmond responded with a 4-1 run in the latter stages of the game to reach the final 10-7 score. Spider Ashley Friend posted three goals with Libby Berlacher adding two for Richmond. Jackie Swansburg took the loss in goal for Richmond while recording five saves. OSU’s Kim Hastings picked up the win in playing the first half. She gave up two goals and made five saves. Buckeye Taryn Bowen played the second half and had eight saves while giving up five goals.
OHIO STATE 14, CORNELL 11
Ohio State, behind six goals by Caroline Weatherill, defeated Cornell, 14-11, in a game played at Vanderbilt. Weatherill scored three straight goals to break a 3-3 tie to put OSU ahead for good. Cornell opened the second half the three goals to cut the lead to 10-8 but Weatherill’s fifth and sixth goals go the lead back to three at 12-9. Amy Tulk, Regina Oliver and Ashley Evans added two goals each for the Buckeyes. Jaime Quinn scored three goals for Cornell with Lindsay Steinberg and Kristen Smith adding two each. In goal, Maggie Fava took the loss for the Big Red while making seven saves. OSU’s Kim Hastings played 51 minutes for the win and had 14 saves while giving up 8 goals. Taryn Bowen finished the game (nine minutes) for the Buckeyes, giving up the final three goals.
WEATHERILL HAS OUTSTANDING GAME AGAINST CORNELL
Coming off the bench, Caroline Weatherill was key to OSU’s win over Cornell. Her three consecutive goals in the first half broke a 3-3 tie to put OSU ahead for good. Weatherill scored six goals in the contest on seven shots, including a free position score. She also had three ground balls, three draw controls and one caused turnover in the victory.
FRESHMEN LAWS AND MILLER COMBINE FOR FOUR GOALS AGAINST RICHMOND
Freshmen attackers Kelyn Laws and Natale Miller each had two goals in OSU’s 10-7 victory over Richmond. The two goals was a career-high for Laws who has scored in four of the games this season. Miller equaled her career-high of two goals against the Spiders. She opened the season with two goals at Stanford. Miller has scored in four of five games this year.
HITES RECORDS CAREER-HIGH TWO ASSISTS AGAINST THE SPIDERS
Noemi Hites recorded her first points of the season against Richmond with two assists, both coming on goals by Natale Miller. Her first assist gave OSU a 3-1 lead in the first half and her second pushed the OSU lead to 9-3 in the second half.
HASTINGS AND BOWEN SHARING THE GOAL
Kim Hastings and Taryn Bowen are sharing the goalie duties for the Buckeyes. Hastings has started all six games and has a 3-3 record. Hastings and Bowen have had four games in which Hastings played the first half and Bowen the second. Hastings has a .562 save percentage (with 41 saves) and has an 8.65 goals against average. Bowen has 20 saves (.426) had has an 11.25 goals against average.
OLIVER NOW SEVENTH IN CAREER POINTS
With her three goals against Richmond, and two goals and two assists against Cornell Regina Oliver now has 108 career points (79 goals, 25 assists) and has moved into seventh place on the OSU career points list. She had been tied for eighth with Lauren Cochran (1999-02) with 101 points (86-15) and has passed Erin Andersen (1998-01) with 107 (83-24).
OLIVER TIED FOR THIRD IN CAREER GROUND BALLS
Regina Oliver has moved into a tie for third on the OSU career ground balls list with her three against Richmond and six against Cornell last week. She now has 140 in her career and is tied with Trisha Miller (1999-02). Oliver had been tied for fifth at 133 with Lauren Cochran (1999-02) and moved past Celeste Cianfrani (1998-01) with 134.
OHIO STATE MOVES TO 18TH IN IWLCA POLL THIS WEEK
After Ohio State’s 10-7 win over No. 18 Richmond, the Buckeyes moved to 18th in the weekly Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association poll. OSU had dropped out of the Top-20 the previous week.
OSU FACES PENN STATE ON CSTV SCHEDULE
CSTV (College Sports Television) selected the Friday, April 23 Ohio State-Penn State game as part of their 20-event lacrosse schedule. The 7 p.m. game will be one of five regular season women’s games to be carried by CSTV. They will also telecast all three NCAA women’s championship games.
OHIO STATE REGULAR SEASON ROAD WIN STREAK STOPPED AT TEN
With a 10-9 overtime win at Stanford, Ohio State extended its regular season road-winning streak to 10 games. The streak ended two days later with a 10-6 loss at California. OSU won all eight regular season road games last season including wins at Penn State and Notre Dame. The streak included a 2002 victory at Ohio.
OHIO STATE, THE DEFENDING AMERICAN LACROSSE CONFERENCE CHAMPIONS
At the end of the 2003 ALC season, Ohio State and Penn State were tied with 5-1 records. Based upon the league bylaws, Ohio State’s 10-9 win at Penn State made the Buckeyes the outright champion of the conference. They bylaw was written to select the league’s automatic berth into the NCAA Championship, which takes effect this season.
BUCKEYES PICKED TO WIN ALC CHAMPIONSHIP
Ohio State, the defending American Lacrosse Conference Champion, has been picked as the preseason favorite to win the league championship by a vote of the conference coaches. OSU received four of the seven first place votes and 46 total points. Penn State was ranked second with two first place votes and 43 points. The Buckeyes and Nittany Lions finished the 2003 conference season with 5-1 records but Ohio State won the championship based upon the bylaws of the conference.
OLIVER AND CARTER NAMED TO ALC PRESEASON ALL-CONFERENCE TEAM
By a vote of the conference coaches, Ohio State midfielders Regina Oliver (Jr., Pottstown, Pa.) and KC Carter (So., Birchrunville, Pa.) have been named to the 12-player 2004 American Lacrosse Conference Preseason All-Conference Team. Oliver was further honored as the 2004 Preseason Player of the Year. She was the 2003 ALC Player of the Year and the 2002 Rookie of the Year. Carter was the 2003 Rookie of the Year.
JESSE OWENS MEMORIAL STADIUM, HOME OF THE BUCKEYES
The 8,000-seat Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium arguably is one of the finest multi-sport facilities in the country, hosting track and field and lacrosse in the spring and soccer in the fall. Over the last two years, the Buckeyes are 12-3 (.800) at the facility.
HEAD COACH Sue Stimmel
Sue Stimmel is in her ninth season as the head coach for the Ohio State women’s lacrosse team. A 1984 graduate of Temple University, Stimmel is the only coach that the Buckeye program has had. She spent six years has the head coach of Denison prior to coming to Ohio State. Stimmel is 71-53 (.573) at Ohio State and is 147-71 (.674) in her 15-year career. The 2003 season was her most successful with a program-high 14 wins, finishing the regular season ranked 11th nationally and making the school’s second consecutive appearance in the NCAA Championship, advancing to the quarterfinals. Her squad won the 2003 American Lacrosse Conference Championship and she was named the ALC Coach of the Year and was later named the 2003 Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association Regional Coach of the Year.

The Buckeyes will play its fourth road game in a row when the Buckeyes travel to face Virginia Tech at 4 p.m., Friday, April 2. Ohio State then returns home to host Davidson at 1 p.m., Sunday, April 4.
