COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State (2-3 overall) women’s lacrosse team built up a 9-3 lead over 18th-ranked Richmond (3-3) and came away with a 10-7 victory at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. OSU expanded a 5-2 halftime lead to 9-3 with 18 minutes left. Richmond out scored the Buckeyes four to one late in the second half, but OSU secured the victory. OSU’s Regina Oliver (Jr., Pottstown, Pa.) scored a team-high three goals for the Buckeyes with Kelyn Laws (Fr., Ellicott City, Md.) and Natale Miller (West Chester, Pa.) adding two each. Richmond’s Ashley Friend had a team-high three goals with Spider Libby Berlacher contributing two more.
Richmond opened the scoring with Friend’s first goal, assisted by Allison Nuzzi, with just 38 seconds gone in the game. KC Carter (So., Birchrunville, Pa.) tied the game at 2:37. Goals by Laws (4:41), assisted by Amy Tulk (Sr., West Chester, Pa.) and Miller (8:49), assisted by Noemi Hites (Sr., Pleasanton, Calif.) gave the Buckeyes a 3-1 lead. Richmond’s Friend scored her second goal, unassisted, at 10:19 to cut the lead to 3-2. OSU’s Oliver scored at 18:52 and with Laws’ second goal at 24:52, assisted by Carter, to gave Ohio State a 5-2 lead at halftime.
Ohio State opened the scoring in the second half with a goal by Oliver, her second, at 35:26 with an assist by Laws. The Spiders responded with a score at 36:49 by Caroline McGuire, assisted by Kristen Habicht, to return the lead to three at 6-3. The Buckeyes scored the next three goals to open a 9-3 lead. Ashley Evans (Jr., Ellicott City, Md.) started the run at 39:26. Oliver’s third goal of the game came at 40:34 and Miller tallied her second score at 42:15 with an assist from Hites. Richmond began a 4-1 run beginning with goals by Friend, her third, at 43:07, assisted by Nuzzi, and from Berlacher at 44:55 to cut the OSU lead to 9-5. Tulk scored OSU’s 10th goal of the game at 53:18 to make it a five goal lead (10-5). Richmond came right back with a score at 53:44 by Polly Purcell, with an assist from Nuzzi, and with Berlacher’s second goal at 56:09 cut the Buckeye lead to 10-7 to end the scoring. OSU’s Kim Hastings (So., Sewickley, Pa.) started in goal for the Buckeyes, playing the first 30 minutes. She gave up two goals and had five saves. Taryn Bowen (Sr., Columbus, Ohio) played the second half (30:00) for Ohio State, giving up five goals and making eight stops. In goal for Richmond, Jackie Swansburg had five saves and gave up 10 goals.
Ohio State begins a four game road swing next Tuesday when it faces Cornell. The March 23rd game will be played at Vanderbilt at 1 p.m.
