Men’s Hockey Come Back to Defeat Notre Dame in Overtime, 6-5 – Ohio State Buckeyes

DETROIT – The No. 11t/12 Ohio State men’s hockey team scored the last three goals of the game, with Matt Beaudoin scoring twice and Tyson Strachan tallying the overtime gamewinner, to beat No. 13/15 Notre Dame, 6-5, in the quarterfinal round of the CCHA Super Six Championship.
The No. 4 seed Buckeyes advance to play No. 2 Miami at 7:35 p.m. Friday at Joe Louis Arena in the semifinals. No. 1 Michigan will meet No. 6 Northern Michigan in the first semifinal at 4:05 p.m.; the Wildcats beat Michigan State in the other quarterfinal (2-1). Both semifinal games will be televised on Fox Sports Detroit.
The Irish jumped out to a 2-0 lead 6:56 into the game, as Rob Globke scored at 5:32 and Aaron Gill tallied at 6:56. Both goals were unassisted; the second ND tally went in off a Buckeye. The Buckeyes battled back to tie the game on two power-play goals. Rod Pelley (So., Kitimat, British Columbia) scored at 13:59, assisted by Beaduoin (Rock Forest, Quebec), followed by a Dave Steckel (Sr., West Bend, Wis.) goal at 17:30, set up by Doug Andress (Sr., Iroquois Falls, Ontario) and Beaudoin. Notre Dame’s Gill ended the scoring in the period with a power-play goal at 18:40. OSU put 16 shots on net in the period, while the Irish had 15. ND took a 3-2 lead into the first intermission.
Scott May (Sr., Surrey, British Columbia) tied the game just 16 seconds into the second period, taking a long pass from Matt Waddell (Fr., Armstrong, British Columbia) and skating in on a breakaway for his 15th goal of the year. The Irish then went up by on goals by Gill (completing a hat trick) at 4:47 and Mike Walsh at 10:15. Beaudoin cut the lead to one (5-4) with OSU’s third power-play goal of the game, as he put in the rebound of a Tyson Strachan (Fr., Melfort, Saskatchewan) shot. Thomas Welsh (Jr., Regina, Saskatchewan) picked up the second assist on the goal. Ohio State outshot the Irish in the period, 15-9.
The Buckeyes applied pressure in the third period, outshooting the Irish, 12-4, but could not get the equalizer until Beaudoin scored at 17:34, assisted by Andress.
In overtime, each team had a number of chances, as each team had six shots on net. Strachan won the game at 9:49. May won the faceoff in the Irish zone and the puck went to Andrew Schembri (Fr., Mississauga, Ontario) and Andress before getting to Strachan at the point; his slapshot beat ND goalie David Brown.
Senior Mike Betz (Sr., Elizabeth, Pa.) started the game for the Buckeyes, making 14 saves and allowing five goals in 30:42. Dave Caruso (So., Roswell, Ga.) came in and shut out the Irish over the final 39:07. Brown stopped 43 Buckeye shots, allowing six goals. Ohio State outshot Notre Dame in the game, 49-34.
OSU’s power play scored three goals on five chances, while the Irish power play went 1-for-5.
Postgame Notes
The Buckeyes improve to 24-15-0 on the year, while the Irish drop to 20-14-4.
This marks the third consecutive year the Buckeyes have advanced to the semifinal round of the CCHA Super Six. The squad also posted a comeback 6-5 overtime win over Alaska Fairbanks in 2002, while Ohio State defeated the Irish last season, 3-1.
The game Friday will mark the first time Ohio State and Miami have met in the CCHA playoffs since the quarterfinal round of the 1997 tournament, a two-game MU sweep of the Buckeyes in Oxford, Ohio. OSU is 1-5-0 against the RedHawks in postseason play.
Beaudoin had four points, on two goals and two assists, in the game to lead the Buckeyes. It marked the first multiple goal, multiple assist and multiple-point game of his Buckeye career.
Strachan had a goal and an assist for the first multiple-point game of his Buckeye career.
Andress had a career-high three assists in the game. He leads the Buckeyes this season with a career-high 26 helpers. Andress’ 26 assists are tied for the sixth-highest total in OSU history for a defenseman.
OSU improved to 1-2-0 in overtime on the year. At Joe Louis Arena, the team is 3-2-0 in overtime.
The three power-play goals in the game by the Buckeyes marked the fourth time this season the squad scored three power-play tallies.
Steckel’s two points gave him 30 points on the season, the third time in his career he has reached the 30-point mark.
Pelley’s goal was his career-best ninth of the season.
