Women’s Lacrosse Hosts No. 18 Richmond Saturday At Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State (1-3, 0-2 American Lacrosse Conference) women’s lacrosse squad returns home for a non-conference match against Richmond (2-2) at noon, Saturday, March 20. Richmond, currently tied for 18th in the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association Poll, is coming off an 11-10 double-overtime victory over Williams and Mary. They travel to Old Dominion for a Wednesday contest. The Buckeyes, with a 13-5 loss to No. 17 Johns Hopkins last Sunday have lost three consecutive games.
A LOOK AT OHIO STATE
Sue Stimmel coaches the Buckeyes. Ohio State is 1-3 overall and 0-2 in the American Lacrosse Conference. The Buckeyes dropped a 13-5 decision at No. 17 Johns Hopkins Sunday for its third straight loss. Ohio State’s Caroline Weatherill (Sr., Malvern, Pa.) is the team leader in points with six (four goals, two assists). Regina Oliver (Jr., Pottstown, Pa.) and Amy Tulk (Sr., West Chester, Pa.) have five points each on five goals while Natale Miller (Fr., West Chester, Pa.) has four goals and an assist. Oliver is the team leader in ground balls with 21 with Ashley Evans (Jr., Ellicott City, Md.) second with 17 and Kelyn Laws (Fr., Ellicott City, Md.) third with 14. Oliver has a team-high 18 caused turnovers with Kelly Cook (Sr., Downingtown, Pa.) second with seven. Oliver and Weatherill are the team co-leaders in draw controls with seven. Kim Hastings (So., Sewickley, Pa.) and Taryn Bowen (Sr., Columbus, Ohio) have been splitting time in goal. Hastings has started all four matches and has a 1-3 record. She has made 22 saves (.500) and has a 9.36 goals against average. Bowen has made 12 saves (.387) and has a 10.86 goals against average. A LOOK AT RICHMOND
Sue Murphy coaches the 18th-ranked Spiders. Richmond has a 2-2 overall record and has won its last two games. The Spiders play at Old Dominion Wednesday afternoon. Last Wednesday, Richmond won an 11-10 double-overtime contest against William & Mary at home. Prior to the Old Dominion game, Allison Nuzzi was leading the Spiders in points with 13. She has eight goals and five assists. Second is Polly Purcell with 10 points with seven goals and three assists. Kristen Habicht has a team-high nine goals for the Spiders. Purcell leads the team with 17 ground balls. Jackie Swansburg is second with 11 and Megan Riedy has 10. Habicht has a team-high 12 draw controls with Purcell second with seven. Purcell leads the team with nine caused turnovers. Riedy ranks second with six. In goal, Jackie Swansburg has played all four games. She has a 12.77 goals against average and a .409 saves percentage.
RICHMOND-OHIO STATE SERIES HISTORY
Ohio State has won the only meeting with Richmond. The game took place last season with Ohio State winning, 7-6.

Feb. 2, 2003 – #11 Ohio State at #19 Richmond
The 11th-ranked Ohio State (1-1) women’s lacrosse team overcame a 6-5 lead by 19th-ranked Richmond (0-1) with goals by Shannon Wilson and Tracey Bounds to defeat the Spiders, 7-6 at Crenshaw Field Sunday afternoon. Wilson’s second goal in the second half tied the game at six with 13:56 left in the contest. Bounds scored her third goal of the day with 3:46 left to give OSU the victory. Spider Katie Dolan also tied for game-high honors with three scores while Polly Purcell added two goals. Richmond opened the scoring with a Dolan goal with 2:35 gone in the first half from a Purcell assist. Bounds tied the game at one at 6:50 and the Buckeyes took a 2-1 lead with a KC Carter goal assisted by Bounds. Richmond tied the game at 9:07 at two-all. Twenty-five seconds later, OSU regained the lead at 9:32 with the second goal by Bounds. Spider Katie Dolan scored her second goal of the game at 12:28 to tie the score at three. Richmond took a 4-3 lead at 14:20 with Purcell’s second goal of the game. The Buckeyes closed out the scoring in the first half at 18:37 with a tally by Regina Oliver to tie the game at four. Richmond broke the halftime tie at 30:26 with a goal by Lexi Poklemba to hold a 5-4 lead. OSU tied the game, five-all, at 41:09 on a Wilson goal. The Spiders, with the third goal by Dolan, took a 6-5 lead at 42:47. Wilson’s second goal of the half at 46:04 tied the game at 6-6. With just 3:46 left in the contest, Bounds recorded her third goal of the game on an assist from Oliver to give Ohio State a 7-6 lead for the win. In goal, OSU’s Erin Forquer made five saves for the Buckeyes. Spider goalie Kelly Johnson recorded 12 saves for Richmond.
#17 JOHNS HOPKINS 13, #19 OHIO STATE 5
19th-ranked Ohio State (1-3 overall, 0-2 American Lacrosse Conference) women’s lacrosse team dropped a 13-5 decision at No. 17 Johns Hopkins (5-0, 3-0) Sunday afternoon at Homewood Field. Amy Tulk scored a team-high two goals for the Buckeyes with Caroline Weatherill, Ashley Evans and Kelyn Laws adding single goals. John Hopkins’ Mary Key scored a game-high five goals for the Blue Jays with Steph Janice adding two. Down 5-1 at half, OSU would close to within three (8-5) with nine minutes left. Johns Hopkins responded with five straight goals for the 13-8 final score. In goal, OSU’s Kim Hastings started the game and played the first 30 minutes. She gave up five goals while recording four saves in taking the loss. Taryn Bowen played the second 30 minutes for the Buckeyes, giving up eight goals while recording five saves. Johns Hopkins’ Lauren Riddick took the win in goal. She gave up five goals and recorded seven assists.
TULK NETS TWO GOALS AGAINST BLUE JAYS
Against Johns Hopkins, Amy Tulk was Ohio State’s top scorer with two goals. It marked the second game this season she has scored twice. Tulk posted two goals earlier at Stanford. She also recorded three ground balls and a caused turnover against the Blue Jays.
WEATHERILL NOW SIXTH IN CAREER DRAW CONTROLS
With three draw controls against Johns Hopkins, Caroline Weatherill has moved to sixth on the Ohio State career draw controls list with 39. She passed Celeste Cianfrani (1998-01) with 38 and KC Carter (So., Birchrunville, Pa.) with 37. Weatherill had a goal and an assist against the Blue Jays.
OLIVER TIES FOR SIXTH IN CAREER GROUND BALLS
With her four ground balls against John Hopkins, Regina Oliver now has 133 in her career and has moved into a tie for fifth with Lauren Cochran (1999-02) on the Ohio State career ground balls list. Oliver also had a draw control and three caused turnovers in the game against John Hopkins.
OSU FACES PENN STATE ON CSTV SCHEDULE
CSTV (College Sports Television) selected the Friday, April 23 Ohio State-Penn State game as part of their 20-event lacrosse schedule. The 7 p.m. game will be one of five regular season women’s games to be carried by CSTV. They will also telecast all three NCAA women’s championship games.
OHIO STATE REGULAR SEASON ROAD WIN STREAK STOPPED AT TEN
With a 10-9 overtime win at Stanford, Ohio State extended its regular season road-winning streak to 10 games. The streak ended two days later with a 10-6 loss at California. OSU won all eight regular season road games last season including wins at Penn State and Notre Dame. The streak included a 2002 victory at Ohio.
OHIO STATE, THE DEFENDING AMERICAN LACROSSE CONFERENCE CHAMPIONS
At the end of the 2003 ALC season, Ohio State and Penn State were tied with 5-1 records. Based upon the league bylaws, Ohio State’s 10-9 win at Penn State made the Buckeyes the outright champion of the conference. They bylaw was written to select the league’s automatic berth into the NCAA Championship, which takes effect this season.
BUCKEYES PICKED TO WIN ALC CHAMPIONSHIP
Ohio State, the defending American Lacrosse Conference Champion, has been picked as the preseason favorite to win the league championship by a vote of the conference coaches. OSU received four of the seven first place votes and 46 total points. Penn State was ranked second with two first place votes and 43 points. The Buckeyes and Nittany Lions finished the 2003 conference season with 5-1 records but Ohio State won the championship based upon the bylaws of the conference.
OLIVER AND CARTER NAMED TO ALC PRESEASON ALL-CONFERENCE TEAM
By a vote of the conference coaches, Ohio State midfielders Regina Oliver (Jr., Pottstown, Pa.) and KC Carter (So., Birchrunville, Pa.) have been named to the 12-player 2004 American Lacrosse Conference Preseason All-Conference Team. Oliver was further honored as the 2004 Preseason Player of the Year. She was the 2003 ALC Player of the Year and the 2002 Rookie of the Year. Carter was the 2003 Rookie of the Year.
JESSE OWENS MEMORIAL STADIUM, HOME OF THE BUCKEYES
The 8,000-seat Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium arguably is one of the finest multi-sport facilities in the country, hosting track and field and lacrosse in the spring and soccer in the fall. Over the last two years, the Buckeyes are 11-3 (.786) at the facility.
HEAD COACH Sue Stimmel
Sue Stimmel is in her ninth season as the head coach for the Ohio State women’s lacrosse team. A 1984 graduate of Temple University, Stimmel is the only coach that the Buckeye program has had. She spent six years has the head coach of Denison prior to coming to Ohio State. Stimmel is 69-53 (.566) at Ohio State and is 145-71 (.671) in her 15-year career. The 2003 season was her most successful with a program-high 14 wins, finishing the regular season ranked 11th nationally and making the school’s second consecutive appearance in the NCAA Championship, advancing to the quarterfinals. Her squad won the 2003 American Lacrosse Conference Championship and she was named the ALC Coach of the Year and was later named the 2003 Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association Regional Coach of the Year.
NEXT WEEK FOR OHIO STATE
The Buckeyes will play the next four matches on the road, including three next week. Ohio State will face Cornell at 1 p.m., March 23 in match played at Vanderbilt. Next up for the Buckeyes is the ALC/ACC Challenge hosted by North Carolina. Ohio State will face the host Tar Heels at 7 p.m., Friday, March 26. OSU will then face Maryland at 1 p.m., Sunday, March 28.
