COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 19th-ranked Ohio State (1-3 overall, 0-2 American Lacrosse Conference) women’s lacrosse team dropped a 13-5 decision at No. 17 Johns Hopkins (5-0, 3-0) Sunday afternoon at Homewood Field. Amy Tulk (Sr., West Chester, Pa.) scored a team-high two goals for the Buckeyes with Caroline Weatherill (Sr., Malvern, Pa.), Ashley Evans (Jr., Ellicott City, Md.) and Kelyn Laws (Fr., Ellicott City, Md.) adding single goals. John Hopkins’ Mary Key scored a game-high five goals for the Blue Jays with Steph Janice adding two.
The Blue Jays came out strong in the first half by scoring the first five goals of the game. Key started the scoring with a goal with 2:34 gone in the game. She added her second goal at 7:56. Megan Voight continued the run with a score at 8:47 followed by goals at 21:36 by Marlena Wittelsberger and at 23:37 by Steph Janice. Ohio State stopped the run with a goal at 28:29 by Tulk to end the scoring in the half.
Johns Hopkins opened the second half with an Erin Riordan goal at 31:19. Ohio State responded with Tulk’s second goal at 31:47. Blue Jay Heidi Pearce made it 7-2 at 36:10. OSU’s Evans scored at 39:52 to make it 7-3. Key’s third goal at 41:05 made the lead five (8-3). The Buckeyes, with goals by Weatherill (43:17) and Laws (51:22) cut the lead to three at 8-5. The Blue Jays responded with two goals in a period of 17 seconds. Key’s fourth goal of the game came at 51:29 with Janice’s second goal of the game at 51:46 making the lead, 10-5. The Blue Jays added goals by Kelley Putnam at 54:09, Key’s fifth at 55:43 and a final goal by Lacey-Leigh Hentz at 59:37 for a final 13-8 win for Johns Hopkins.
In goal, OSU’s Kim Hastings (So., Sewickley, Pa.) started the game and played the first 30 minutes. She gave up five goals while recording four saves in taking the loss. Taryn Bowen (Sr., Columbus, Ohio) played the second 30 minutes for the Buckeyes, giving up eight goals while recording five saves. Johns Hopkins’ Lauren Riddick took the win in goal. She gave up five goals and recorded seven assists.
Ohio State returns home next Saturday at Noon to host Richmond in a non-conference game.
