No. 7 Women’s Volleyball Sweeps Iowa, 30-22, 30-20, 30-18 – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The seventh-ranked Ohio State (22-1 overall, 12-1 Big Ten) women’s volleyball team defeated Iowa 3-0 (30-22, 30-20, 30-18) Friday night in Carver-Hawkeye Arena. OSU’s Stacey Gordon (Sr., Oshawa, Ontario) scored a team-high 22 points with Ami Stevens (Fr., Centerburg, Ohio) adding 12. Gordon produced a match-high 21 kills (.429) and added an ace serve. Stevens had 10 kills (.400), an ace serve and two assist blocks. Iowa’s Stacey Vitali and Carolyn Giese each had 10.5 points for the Hawkeyes. Vitali had 10 kills and an assist block while Giese recorded nine kills, one ace serve and one assist block.
Iowa held a nine-seven lead before kills by Maya Mapp (Sr., Washington, D.C.) and Gordon tied game one at nine. OSU kills by Marisa Main (So., Louisville, Ky.), two from Gordon and an Iowa error gave Ohio State a 13-9 lead. The Buckeyes maintained the lead and with a Main kill reached game point at 29-21. An Iowa error ended the game at 30-21. For the game, Ohio State hit .304 to Iowa’s .163.
Ohio State took a 3-1 lead in game two with a Gordon kill and two Iowa errors. Iowa, with a Vitali-Giese block and a Giese kill, tied the game at three. Two kills from Gordon and one each from Stevens and Danielle Meyer (Fr., Cincinnati, Ohio) gave Ohio State a 7-3 lead. Leading 11-8, the Buckeyes scored five consecutive points to open a 16-8 lead. The run began with a Briana McCarthy (So., Beaver Dam, Wis.) kill. Two kills from Gordon, one from Meyer and a Stevens’ ace serve completed the run. The Buckeyes held the lead to win the game, 30-20. Ohio State hit .362 for the game to .275 for Iowa.
Two Iowa errors gave Ohio State a 2-0 lead in game three. A Vitali kill made it 2-1. Three Gordon kills, a Meyer ace serve and a McCarthy kill opened a 7-1 Buckeye lead. Ohio State, with a Nicole Britenriker (Fr., Cincinnati, Ohio)-Jackie Schardt (Jr., Colorado Springs, Colo.) block ended the game at 30-18. OSU hit .400 for the game to .122 for Iowa.
Ohio State hit .352 for the match to .185 for Iowa. The Buckeyes had a 56-43 advantage in kills and had a 3-2 margin in ace serves. Iowa gave up six service error to five for Ohio State. Each squad produced 51 digs with Iowa’s Pam Kavadas recording a match-high 22. At the net Ohio State had a 5.5 to 2 edge in team blocks. OSU’s Main had 34 assists in the match while Iowa’s Justeen Patton recorded 29.
Ohio State will face No. 5 Minnesota (21-4, 10-3) in Minneapolis Saturday. The Golden Gophers lost 3-1 (32-30, 30-28, 22-30, 30-26) Friday to No. 6 Penn State (20-2, 11-2).
