COLUMBUS, Ohio – The eighth-ranked Ohio State (26-3 overall, 16-3 Big Ten) women’s volleyball team with 19.5 points from Stacey Gordon (Sr., Oshawa, Ontario) defeated Michigan (19-11, 9-10), 3-0 (30-28, 30-24, 30-17) Friday night in Ann Arbor. Gordon collected a match-high 18 kills, one ace serve and an assist block against the Wolverines. Ami Stevens (Fr., Centerburg, Ohio) added 12.5 points with 10 kills, two ace serves and an assist block. Michigan’s Katie Bruzdzinski scored a team-high 15.5 points (14 kills, one ace, one assist block) with Erin Cobler adding 11 (11 kills).
Leading 12-10 in game one, Ohio State, with kills from Marisa Main (So., Louisville, Ky.) and Gordon, an ace serve by Rebecca Kastein (Jr., Mt. Lebanon, Pa.) and a Michigan error opened a 16-10 Buckeye lead. Michigan was able to close the lead to one on a Cobler kill to make the score, 24-23. The Buckeyes held the lead and had game point at 29-26. A Jennifer Gandolph kill and an OSU error cut the margin to one at 29-28. Gordon’s kill closed the game at 30-28. Ohio State hit .340 for the game to .294 for Michigan.
Michigan held a 7-5 lead in game two before a six-point run by the Buckeyes put Ohio State ahead, 11-7. The run included a Main-Briana McCarthy (So., Beaver Dam, Wis.) block, three Gordon kills, an Ami Stevens (Fr., Centerburg, Ohio) ace serve and a Wolverine error. Michigan closed to within two at 19-17. Kills by Gordon and McCarthy, a Kastein service ace and a Gordon-Danielle Meyer (Fr., Cincinnati, Ohio) block made it 23-17. The game ended on a Michigan error at 30-24. Ohio State hit .333 in the game to Michigan’s .282.
Tied at three in game three, two Stevens’ kills, one from Gordon and a Michigan error opened a 7-4 Ohio State lead. The Buckeyes continued to expand the lead building a 12-point margin at 21-9. Ohio State took the lead to 13 with an Amanda Miller (Jr., Littleton, Colo.) kill to end the game at 30-17. For the game, Ohio State hit .324 to .024 for Michigan.
Ohio State hit .333 in the match to .205 for Michigan. The Buckeyes had a 55-47 advantage in kills and had a six to one margin in ace serves with Kastein recording a match-high three to equal her career high. Michigan gave up five service errors to two for Ohio State. Defensively, the Buckeyes had a 57-56 advantage in digs with Michigan’s Stesha Selsky collecting a match-high 21 digs. At the net, the Buckeyes had a seven to six margin in team blocks. Ohio State’s Main and Michigan’s Lyndsay Miller recorded match highs of four assist blocks each. Main posted a match-high 46 assists in the match while UM’s Lisa Gamalski.
Ohio State closes out the regular season by playing at Michigan State Saturday.
