No. 7 Women’s Volleyball Defeats Illinois In Five Games – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The seventh-ranked Ohio State (25-3 overall, 15-3 Big Ten) women’s volleyball team behind Stacey Gordon’s (Sr., Oshawa, Ontario) 35.5 points defeated Illinois (18-8, 10-7), 3-2 (30-24, 29-31, 30-28, 27-30, 15-8) Friday night in St. John Arena. Gordon had a match-high 32 kills adding a solo and five assist blocks and collected a match-high 27 digs. OSU’s Ami Stevens (Fr., Centerburg, Ohio) contributed 17 points in the match with 14 kills, two ace serves and two assist blocks. For Illinois, Rachel VanMeter scored a team-high 24 points with 22 kills and two solo blocks. Jessica Belter added 21 points with 18 kills and six assist blocks for the Illini.
Tied at 23 in game one, Ohio State scored the next five points to take a 28-23 lead. The run started with kills from Gordon and Briana McCarthy (So., Beaver Dam, Wis.). A ace serve by Stevens and two Gordon kills completed the run. A Jen Hynds kill made it 28-24 but a Gordon kill set game point at 29-24. McCarthy and Maya Mapp (Sr., Washington, D.C.) combined for a block to end the game at 30-24. Ohio State hit .209 for the game to .059 for Illinois.
In game two, a Belter kill set game point for Illinois at 29-27. Two Illinois errors tied the game at 29. Kills by Vicki Brown and VanMeter won the game for Illinois at 31-29. The Illini hit .256 for the game to .176 for the Buckeyes.
Ohio State held a 13-7 lead in game three but Illinois cut into the lead to tie the game at 24. Two Gordon kills gave OSU a 26-24 lead. At 28-26, a Mapp kill set game point at 29-26. Two OSU errors cut the lead to 29-28. An Illinois error ended the game at 30-28, OSU. Ohio State hit .195 to .000 for Illinois.
Ohio State held a 26-25 lead in game four off a Marisa Main (So., Louisville, Ky.)-Meyer block. A Meghan Macdonald-Belter block tied the match at 26 for Illinois. The Illini took a 27-26 lead with a Macdonald kill. Stevens tied the game at 27 for OSU with a kill. A Belter kill and an OSU error set game point for Illinois at 29-27. Belter closed out the game with a kill for a 30-27 win to tie the match at two games each. Illinois hit .213 to .125 for OSU.
Ohio State built a quick 10-3 lead in game five. A three-point run by Illinois cut the Buckeye lead to 10-6. Ohio State reached match point on an Illini error at 14-7. An OSU error cut the margin to 14-8. Stevens ended the game with a kill to close the game at 15-8, winning the match, 3-2. Ohio State hit .375 for the game to .000 for Illinois.
Ohio State hit .192 for the match to .126 for Illinois. The Buckeyes had a 78-57 advantage in kills while Illinois had a six to five margin in ace serves. Each squad had 10 service errors. OSU had a 70-49 margin in digs and had a 16.5 to 16 margin in team blocks. OSU’s Danielle Meyer (Fr., Cincinnati, Ohio) had a match/career-high nine assist blocks in the match. Buckeye setter Main recorded a career-high 68 assists in the match while Stephanie Obermeier had 53 for Illinois.
The Buckeyes close out the regular season next week on the road with matches at Michigan Friday and Michigan State Saturday.
