No. 7 Women’s Volleyball Falls to No. 4 Penn State, 3-1 – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The seventh-ranked Ohio State (24-3 overall, 14-3 Big Ten) women’s volleyball team dropped a 3-1 (30-28, 22-30, 30-19, 30-28) decision to No. 4 Penn State (24-2, 15-2) Wednesday night in St. John Arena. The loss, OSU’s first at home this season, drops the Buckeyes into second place in the Big Ten behind Penn State. Ohio State’s Stacey Gordon (Sr., Oshawa, Ontario) had a match-high 24.5 points for the Buckeyes with Danielle Meyer (Fr., Cincinnati, Ohio) adding 17.5. Gordon recorded a match-high 21 kills, one solo block and three assist blocks. Meyer had 14 kills and seven assist blocks. Penn State’s Kate Price had a team-high 21.5 points for the Nittany Lions. She had a team-high 20 kills, adding an ace serve and one assist block.
Tied at 21 in game one, Penn State took a 24-21 lead. OSU cut the lead to one at 25-24, but a three-point Penn State run made it 28-25. A Buckeye block by Meyer and Briana McCarthy (So., Beaver Dam, Wis.) and a Gordon kill made it 28-26, Penn State. A Syndie Nadeau kill set game point at 29-26. A Gordon kill and a Nittany Lion error cut the lead to 29-28 but a Penn State block by Nadeau and Melissa Walbridge ended the game at 30-28, Penn State. The Nittany Lions hit .200 in the game to .136 for Ohio State.
Leading 13-12 in game two, Ohio State outscored Penn State 13-5 to open a 26-17 lead. At 29-22, a Gordon kill ended the game at 30-22 and tied the match at one game each. The Buckeyes hit .439 in the game to .293 for Penn State.
Ohio State held a 9-8 lead in game three before Penn State outscored Ohio State 14-6 to open a 22-15 lead. The Nittany Lions continued to build the lead, winning the game 30-19 on an OSU service error. Penn State hit .255 for the game to .116 for the Buckeyes. Penn State took an early 5-1 lead in game four. OSU tied the game at seven and took a 10-8 lead. Penn State responded with a four-point run to take a 12-10 lead. A five-point Ohio State run gave the Buckeyes a 15-12 lead. Trailing 16-14, Penn State kills from Nadeau and Sam Tortorello tied the game at 16. Tied at 24, a Price kill and an OSU error put Penn State ahead, 26-24. Kills by Maya Mapp (Sr., Washington, D.C.) and Ami Stevens (Fr., Centerburg, Ohio) and an Penn State error put OSU ahead, 27-26. Kills by Cassy Salyer and Ashley Pederson and an OSU error set game and match point for Penn State at 29-27. Stevens’ kill closed the lead to 29-28 but Tortorello kill ended the game at 29-30 for Penn State. In the game, Ohio State hit .217 to Penn State’s .160.
For the match, both squads hit .224 and recorded three ace serves. The Buckeyes gave up seven service errors to five for Penn State. Ohio State had a 70-66 margin in kills and an 85-62 advantage in digs. The Buckeyes out blocked the Nittany Lions, 14 to eight with Meyer recording a match-high seven assists. Ohio State’s Marisa Main (So., Louisville, Ky.) recorded 60 assists for the Buckeyes while PSU’s Tortorello had 52.
Ohio State will close out the regular season home schedule when they host Illinois (18-7, 10-6) Friday night at 7 p.m. in St. John Arena.
