COLUMBUS, Ohio – The eighth-ranked Ohio State (24-2 overall, 14-2 Big Ten) women’s volleyball team defeated Wisconsin (16-8, 10-6), 3-0 (30-18, 32-30, 30-23) Saturday night in St. John Arena to remain tied for first place in the Big Ten Conference with fourth-ranked Penn State (23-2, 14-2), a 3-0 (30-17, 30-25, 30-8) winner over Northwestern tonight. Ohio State will battle Penn State next Wednesday, Nov. 17 at 7 p.m. in St. John Arena for the outright lead in the conference. Buckeye Stacey Gordon (Sr., Oshawa, Ontario) had a match-high 19.5 points with 19 kills (.375) and an assist block. Ami Stevens (Fr., Centerburg, Ohio) added 15.5 points with 12 kills, two ace serves and three assist blocks. Also with double-figure points for Ohio State were Danielle Meyer (Fr., Cincinnati, Ohio) and Maya Mapp (Sr., Washington, D.C.) with 11.5 each. Meyer had eight kills (.353), an ace serve and five assist blocks while Mapp had nine kills (.750), a solo block and three assists. Wisconsin’s Aubrey Meierotto scored a team-high 13 points with Sheila Shaw adding 11. Meierotto had 13 kills with Shaw scoring 10 kills and an ace serve.
Tied a seven in game one, a Badger service error, a Mapp kill and a Marisa Main (So., Louisville, Ky.)-Mapp block put OSU ahead, 10-7. Trailing 11-8, Wisconsin closed to within one at 11-10 with an OSU error and a Meierotto kill. A Meyer kill and a Stevens-Meyer block opened a 13-10 OSU lead. The Buckeye would expand the lead, winning the game, 30-18 with a Stevens’ kill. The Buckeyes hit .444 for the game to .081 for Wisconsin.
In a close game two, Ohio State held a 25-22 lead before a four-point run by Wisconsin took the lead at 26-25. A kill and ace serve by Shaw started the run. An OSU error and a Badger block by Amy Bladow and Jackie Simpson put Wisconsin ahead. A Meyer kill tied the game at 26, but an OSU error made it 27-26, Wisconsin. Stevens tied the game at 27 and a Meyer kill gave Ohio State a 28-27 lead. Wisconsin’s Meierotto tied the game at 28. Gordon’s kill set game point at 29-28. Marian Weidner tied the game at 29 with a kill and with an OSU error took a 30-29 lead with game point. Gordon tied the game at 30 with a kill. A Badger error set game point for OSU at 31-30. Briana McCarthy (So., Beaver Dam, Wis.) ace serve ended the game, 32-30 for Ohio State. For the game, Wisconsin out hit Ohio State, .282 to .250.
Ohio State’s five-point run with two kills from Mapp and Gordon and a Main-Mapp block put OSU ahead, 6-1. The Buckeyes held the lead for the rest of the game to win, 30-23 on Gordon’s 19th kill of the match to capture the match, 3-0. Ohio State hit .395 for the game to .159 for Wisconsin.
For the match, Ohio State hit .351 to Wisconsin’s .175. The Buckeyes had a 53-42 advantage in kills and a six-three margin in ace serves. The Badgers gave up nine service errors to six for OSU. Defensively, Ohio State had a 48-29 advantage in digs with OSU’s Rebecca Kastein (Jr., Mt. Lebanon, Pa.) recording a match-high 12. At the net, the Buckeyes enjoyed a 9.5 to six margin in team blocks. Buckeye Meyer collected a match-high five assist blocks for OSU. Buckeye setter Main had 44 assists in the contest to 35 for Wisconsin’s Jackie Simpson.
Ohio State continues at home next week when they host fourth-ranked Penn State in a first-place showdown at 7 p.m. Wednesday. The Buckeyes then host 25th-ranked Illinois Friday at 7 p.m.
