COLUMBUS, Ohio – The eighth-ranked Ohio State (23-2 overall, 13-2 Big Ten) women’s volleyball team remained in a tie for first place in the Big Ten with a 3-1 (30-32, 30-20, 30-20, 30-11) victory over Northwestern (8-17, 3-12) Friday night in St. John Arena. Co-leader fourth-ranked Penn State (22-2, 13-2) defeated Wisconsin 3-1 (23-30, 32-30, 30-25, 30-28) tonight to remain tied with the Buckeyes. Ohio State’s Stacey Gordon (Sr., Oshawa, Ontario) scored a match-high 30.5 points with 30 kills (.414) and an assist block and added a career-high 27 digs. Buckeye Maya Mapp (Sr., Washington, D.C.) had 18.5 points with a season-high 15 kills (.455). Ami Stevens (Fr., Centerburg, Ohio) had 18 points in the match with a career-high 17 kills (.375) and two assist blocks with Briana McCarthy (So., Beaver Dam, Wis.) adding 14.5 points with four kills, a career-high five ace serve, four solo and three assist blocks. Northwestern’s Lindsay Anderson had a team-high 13 points for Northwestern with 12 kills and two assist blocks. Stephanie Jurivich adding 11.5 points with 10 kills, a solo and an assist block.
In game one, Ohio State broke a 27-all tie with a Rebecca Kastein (Jr., Mt. Lebanon, Pa.) ace serve. A Jurivich kill tied the game at 28. The Wildcats took a 29-28 lead with a Courtnie Paulus kill. Marisa Main (So., Louisville, Ky.) tied the game at 29 with a kill. A Northwestern error set game point (30-29) for Ohio State but a Drew Robertson kill tied the game at 30. A Lindsay Anderson kill set game point for Northwestern at 31-30 and an OSU error ended the game at 32-30 for the Wildcats. Northwestern hit .378 for the game to .265 for Ohio State. Tied at six in game two, a Northwestern error gave OSU a 7-6 lead. Kills by Gordon and Stevens, a Kastein ace serve and a Northwestern error opened an 11-6 Buckeye lead. Trailing 12-8, the Wildcats tied the game at 12 with two Paulus ace serves, a Leah Delcourt kill and an OSU error. Tied at 13, solo blocks by McCarthy and Danielle Meyer (Fr., Cincinnati, Ohio) and a Gordon kill opened a 16-13 OSU lead. A Gordon kill ended the game at 30-20 for Ohio State. OSU hit .405 for the game to .083 for Northwestern.
Ohio State opened game three with a 3-0 lead off a Northwestern error and kills from Gordon and McCarthy. The Buckeyes never trailed, winning the game, 30-20, on a McCarthy-Mapp block. The Buckeyes hit .333 in the game to .089 for the Wildcats.
Tied at two in game four, kills from Gordon and Mapp and two Northwestern errors opened a 6-2 Buckeye lead. With Ohio State leading, 15-11, the Buckeyes scored the next 15 points to close the game, 30-11, winning the match, 3-1. Ohio State hit .485 for the game to Northwestern’s -.121. OSU’s Gordon had 11 kills in the game on 16 attempts, with no errors for a .688 hitting percentage.
For the match, Ohio State hit .360 to .126 for Northwestern. The Wildcats hit .378 in game one but hit .026 in the final three games. The Buckeyes had an 82-42 margin in kills and enjoyed an 8-5 advantage in ace serves. Each squad had eight service errors. Defensively, Ohio State had an 80-49 margin in digs. At the net, Ohio State had a 15.5 to six advantage in team blocks. OSU’s McCarthy had a match-high seven blocks (4-3) with Mapp adding six (1-5). Buckeye setter Main recorded a career-high 67 assists in the match while Northwestern’s Robertson had 31.
Ohio State will host Wisconsin Saturday night at 7 p.m. in St. John Arena.
