COLUMBUS, Ohio– Ohio State junior Randy Monahan (Elizabethtown, Pa.) was named the NCAA Men’s Gymnast of the Week by Inside Gymnastics and the Men’s Big Ten Gymnast of the Week Jan. 21 for his performance in the Buckeyes’ victory over Minnesota Jan. 17 at St. John Arena. The awards are Monahan’s second consecutive, as he won both honors following his performance at the Windy City Invitational Jan. 10 in Chicago.
Finishing the meet against the Golden Gophers as the top all-around competitor, Monahan compiled a career and NCAA high 56.500. Monahan’s record setting all-around mark is the highest since the NCAA implemented new scoring rules in 2001.
Against the Gophers, Monahan posted career highs in four events – pommel horse (9.550), rings (9.600), parallel bars (9.150) and high bar (9.850). Capturing first place on rings, vault and high bar, Monahan finished in the Top 3 on all events.
Monahan received both awards last week following his strong showing at the Windy City. This is Monahan’s second career national honor and his Big Ten honor is his third.
