COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 2 Ohio State men’s gymnastics team will travel to Chicago for the second time in a month to face Illinois-Chicago in dual competition at 8 p.m. EST Saturday.
The meet Saturday marks the second of seven road trips for OSU, including traveling to Champaign, Ill., for the Big Ten and NCAA championships.
TWO FOR TWO
Junior captain Randy Monahan has successfully captured both Big Ten Men’s Gymnast of the Week accolades for his performances in the team’s past two meets.
The honor was first awarded for his routines in the Windy City Invitational Jan. 10 in Chicago. During the meet, Monahan won the all-around competition with a score of 54.150 to help lead the Buckeyes to a first place finish out of six teams. Monahan also captured the rings and high bar titles, posting a then-career high 9.50 and 9.65, respectively.
Following the Buckeyes’ victory over the Golden Gophers, Jan. 17 at St. John Arena, Monahan was again named the gymnast of the week, as he recorded a career and NCAA high 56.500 on the all-around. Monahan posted career highs in four events – pommel horse (9.550), rings (9.600), parallel bars (9.150) and high bar (9.850). Capturing first place on rings, vault and high bar, Monahan finished in the Top 3 in all events.
The award is Monahan’s third, as he also received the honor last year following the Windy City Invitational meet.
NATIONALLY RENOWNED
In addition to his Big Ten accolades, Randy Monahan also was named the national gymnast of the week by the publication Inside Gymnastics Jan. 15 and Jan. 21 for his performances at the Windy City and against Minnesota.
“It is definitely an honor to receive this award,” Monahan said. “I had a good performance at the Windy City. I hope to keep going strong throughout the rest of the season.”
RECORD SETTER
Buckeye junior Randy Monahan’s all-around score of 56.50 against Minnesota was the highest in the NCAA since the new scoring rules were implemented for the 2001 season. The previous high was 56.35, set by Daniel Furney of Oklahoma.
SCOUTING ILLINOIS-CHICAGO
With the core of the team returning, No. 7 Illinois-Chicago looks to climb atop the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference.
Key returnees include junior Neil Faustino, senior Matt Musielak and sophomore Nick Stavros. Faustino completed the 2003 ECAC championships with a second place finish in the all-around. Faustino recently competed in the 22nd Southeast Asian Games in Ha Noi, Vietnam, where he earned a gold medal on rings. Musielak was the 2003 ECAC high bar champion and Stavros looks to continue his success following a strong freshman campaign.
The Flames finished fourth at the ECAC championships and had 11 gymnasts qualify for the 2003 NCAA championships.
HEAD COACH CJ JOHNSON
Entering his 30th year as the head coach of Illinois-Chicago, CJ Johnson has been lauded with awards during his tenure for not only his success in competition, but for his contributions to the sport as a whole.
Since UIC gained Division I status, Johnson has been named the Mideast Region Coach of the Year on four different occasions; first in 1980 when his team was ranked 10th in the nation, then again in 1988, 1994 and finally in 1995.
During his coaching career at UIC, Johnson has coached numerous programs to many championships and awards, including a pair of Division II National Championships in 1978 and 1979. Illinois-Chicago’s national championships helped Johnson garner coach of the year accolades during those years. Illinois-Chicago made four consecutive team appearances in the NCAA Division I Regionals from 1994-97.
Johnson continued to mold top quality gymnasts in 2003, as he coached a school record tying 11 gymnasts to the NCAA Championships.
