COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State (2-1) women’s volleyball team captured the consolation match of the Buckeye Classic with a 3-1 (30-25, 30-25, 22-30, 30-21) victory over Temple (0-5). OSU’s Stacey Gordon (Jr., Oshawa, Ontario) powered the victory with a match-high 28 kills with Amanda Miller (So., Littleton, Colo.) adding 12. Owl Charity Hill had a team-high 10 kills for Temple. OSU’s Gordon was named to the All-Tournament Team.
In game one, the Buckeyes expanded an 12-11 lead with a Gordon kill and an Owl error. At 14-12, another Gordon kill and a block by Heather Whalen (Sr., Kalamazoo, Mich.) and D’wan Shackleford (Sr., Newark, Ohio) opened a 16-12 lead. OSU held the lead for a 30-25 win. OSU hit .357 for the game to .176 for Temple.
Tied at three-all in game two, an Anna Tengnas (Fr., Hyltebruk, Sweden) overpass kill, a Temple error and a Whalen-Shackleford block made it 6-3, OSU. Again, The Buckeyes held the margin going on to win, 30-25. OSU hit .364 in the game to .147 for the Owls.
Temple broke a 16-all tied in game three, scoring on an two OSU errors and a Liu Shu kill to take a 19-16 lead. Temple held on to take a 30-22 win. Temple paced the game, hitting .241 to .000 for OSU
The Owls held a 6-4 lead in game four. Rebecca Kastein (So., Mt. Lebanon, Pa.) tied the game at eight with an ace serve. A Gordon kill made it 9-8, OSU. A Temple kill tied the game at nine. OSU took a 13-9 lead with a Gordon kill, a Gordon-Shackleford block, a Temple error and a Shackleford kill. The Buckeyes held the lead going on to a 30-21 win to capture the match, 3-1. Ohio State hit .216 in the game to .059 for Temple For the match, Ohio State hit .224 to .153 for Temple. OSU had a 61-45 advantage in kills and outserved the Owls, nine to three. Defensively, the Buckeyes had a 50-33 advantage in digs and outblocked the Owls, 12 to eight.
In the championship match, Georgia Tech defeated Western Michigan, 3-0 (30-15, 30-18, 30-23). Tech’s Jayme Gergen was named the Buckeye Classic Most Valuable Player while teammates’ Lauren Sauer and Lynnette Most were selected to the All-Tournament Team. Also named to the team were Shaylen Jackson and Carman Malone of Western Michigan; Stacey Gordon of Ohio State and Alison Runk of Temple.
Ohio State will close out the current four-match homestand with a 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 9 contest against Cleveland State in St. John Arena.
