COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State (1-1) women’s volleyball team could not overcome a solid block by Western Michigan (3-1) that produced 24 points in the Bronco 3-1 (28-30, 30-28, 30-28, 30-23) win over the 18th-ranked Buckeyes. OSU’s Stacey Gordon (Jr., Oshawa, Ontario) scored a match-high 21 kills and added 10 digs, five ace serve and three total blocks for the Buckeyes while Amanda Miller (So., Littleton, Colo.) added 14 kills. WMU’s Kristy Ramsey and Carman Malone each recorded 11 kills in the victory, but Shaylen Jackson produced a match-high 15 blocks with a solo and 14 assists for the Broncos.
Ohio State overcame an early five-point Western Michigan lead in game one. The Broncos held a 28-27 lead before a WMU handling error, an ace serve by Katherine Grant (So., Nashville, Tenn.) and a solo block by Miller gave OSU a 30-28 win. Ohio State hit .178 for the game to .091 for Western Michigan.
Western Michigan held leads as large as eight points in game two. OSU tied the game at 22. OSU held a 27-26 lead before an OSU serving error tied the game at 27. A Buckeye error and a kill by Briana McCarthy (Fr., Beaver Dam, Wis.) tied the game at 28. A Ramsey kill and a block by Tinesha Tierney and Ramsey ended the game at 30-28, Western Michigan. The Broncos hit .100 for the game to .019 for OSU.
For the third game, the scored stayed close and OSU tied the game at 28 with a D’wan Shackleford (Sr., Newark, Ohio) kill. Back-to-back blocks by Jackson and Schea Fissel and Jackson and Ramsey closed out the game at 30-28, WMU. WMU hit .167 for the game to .147 for the Buckeyes. The Broncos made an early run in game four and held the lead for a 30-23 win, taking the match, 3-1. Western Michigan hit .364 for the game to .167 for OSU.
For the match, Western Michigan hit .183 to .120 for the Buckeyes. OSU had a 61-48 advantage in kills. The Buckeyes had a nine to three advantage in ace serves while the Broncos had a 46-40 margin in digs. Western Michigan produced 24.5 team blocks in the match to 10 for Ohio State.
The Broncos will face 12th-ranked Georgia Tech (4-0) in the championship match of the Buckeye Classic at noon, Sunday, Sept. 7. Tech advanced with a 3-0 (30-15, 30-20, 30-9) win over Temple (0-4) in the first semifinal. The Buckeyes will face the Owls at 2 p.m. Sunday in the consolation match.
