Women’s Volleyball Falls 3-1 to No. 14 Michigan State – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State (6-4 overall, 0-2 Big Ten) women’s volleyball squad dropped a 3-1 (30-25, 30-24, 31-33, 30-22) decision to No. 14 Michigan State (9-3, 1-1) Saturday night in Jenison Field House. OSU’s Stacey Gordon (Jr., Oshawa, Ontario) recorded a match-high 25 kills for the Buckeyes with Heather Whalen (Sr., Kalamazoo, Mich.) adding 11 and Amanda Miller (So., Littleton, Colo.) 10. MSU’s Jenny Rood had a team-high 19 kills with Kim Schram adding 17 and Sara Villwock, 13.
The Spartans built a 10-3 lead in the first game. With Ohio State falling behind quickly 20-10, the Buckeyes cut the score to 27-24. Even though MSU lost 10 of the final 15 points, it won game one, 30-25. The Spartans hit .200 for the game to .186 for OSU.
The second game almost duplicated the first as MSU won five straight points again early, cruising to a 7-2 advantage. The Green and White managed to sustain its pressure to win the game, 30-24. Michigan State hit .128 for the game to .105 for the Buckeyes.
In the third game, the Buckeyes turned the tables on the Spartans, and connected for a .564 hitting percentage to MSU’s .333. Ohio State grabbed its largest lead of the match at 25-20 only to see it vanish as Michigan State saved four game points to bring the score to 31-31. OSU squeaked out the final two points for a 33-31 win.
Michigan State once again took a big lead late into a game, with a 19-11 advantage in the fourth game. The Buckeyes come back to bring the score within two at 21-19. The Spartans won the next seven points going on to win, 30-22. The Spartans hit .239 for the game to .000 for OSU. For the match, Michigan State hit .230 to OSU’s .209. The Spartans had a 71-62 advantage in kills and a six-three margin in ace serves. OSU gave up 11 service errors to seven for Michigan State. Defensively, MSU recorded 64 digs to 58 for the Buckeyes. OSU’s Whalen had a match/season-high 16 digs. At the net Ohio State outblocked the Spartans, 14 to 12. Buckeye D’wan Shackleford (5th-year senior, Newark, Ohio) had a career-high eight assist blocks for the Buckeyes. OSU setter Briana McCarthy (Fr., Beaver Dam, Wis.) recorded 50 assists in the match while MSU’s Nikki Colson had 53.
The Buckeyes return home for two Big Ten matches next weekend. OSU hosts Indiana, Fri., Oct. 3 and Purdue, Sat., Oct. 4. Both matches begin at 7 p.m. in St. John Arena.
