COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State (6-3 overall, 0-1 Big Ten) women’s volleyball squad, lost its Big Ten opener 0-3 (35-37, 24-30, 24-30) to Michigan (9-3, 1-0) in Ann Arbor Friday night. OSU’s Amanda Miller (So., Littleton, Colo.) scored a match-high 15 kills with Heather Whalen (Sr., Kalamazoo, Mich.) adding 12 and Stacey Gordon (Jr., Oshawa, Ontario) 10. Michigan’s Jennifer Gandolph had a team-high 12 kills with Erin Moore adding 11.
Game one had 15 ties and six lead changes. A block by Miller and D’wan Shackleford (Sr., Newark, Ohio) gave the Buckeyes one of three game points but could not close the game. Michigan also had three game points with the last coming at 36-35. A Buckeye error closed out the game at 37-35. For the game, Ohio State outhit Michigan, .133 to .114.
Michigan jumped out to a 7-2 lead in game two and held on for a 30-24 win. The Wolverines hit .375 to OSU’s .156.
From a two-all tie in game three, the Wolverines opened up a 9-6 lead. Michigan then scored six consecutive points to take a 14-6 lead. The Buckeyes would close to within five at 28-23, but the Wolverines closed out the game, 30-24, to win the match, 3-0. Michigan edged the Buckeyes in hitting, .226 to .220.
The Wolverines outhit Ohio State, .224 to .169 in the match. OSU did have a 50-47 advantage in kills while UM outserved the Buckeyes, four to three. Ohio State gave up six service errors to five in the match. Ohio State edged Michigan, 31-29 in digs with OSU’s Whalen recording a match-high nine digs. The Wolverines had a 14.5 to 11 margin in team blocks. UM’s Gandolph recorded a match-high seven blocks (3 solos, 4 assists) while OSU’s Shackleford had a team-high five assists. Michigan’s Lisa Gamalski had a match-high 41 assists with OSU’s Briana McCarthy (Fr., Beaver Dam, Wis.) collected 40. Ohio State continues the Michigan road trip with an 8 p.m. Saturday contest at Michigan State.
