BUCKEYES BEGIN 33RD SEASON
The Ohio State women’s volleyball team opens it’s 33rd season of competition at 7 p.m. next Wednesday when the Buckeyes host Ball State (0-3) in St. John Arena. The contest begins a four-match home stand over the next seven days. OSU next hosts the Buckeye Classic on Friday and Sunday. Friday’s competition begins with a 5 p.m. match between Georgia Tech (3-0) and Temple (0-3). OSU faces Western Michigan (2-1) in the second match at 7 p.m. Sunday’s consolation and championship matches will have OSU playing at 2 p.m. OSU will conclude the home stand the following Tuesday with a 7 p.m. match with Cleveland State (4-0).
A LOOK AT OHIO STATE
The Buckeyes, coached by Jim Stone, had a 21-11 overall record last season, advancing to the NCAA regional semifinals. OSU returns one stater, outside hitter Stacey Gordon (Jr., Oshawa, Ontario), from last season. A first-team All-American, Gordon was the Big Ten Player of the Year. Other returning players include outside hitter Amanda Miller (So., Littleton, Colo.), middle blocker Katherine Grant (So., Nashville, Tenn.), setters Heather Whalen (Sr., Kalamazoo, Mich.) and Jackie Schardt (So., Colorado Springs, Colo.) and libero Rebecca Kastein (So., Mt. Lebanon, Pa.). OSU has two new freshmen joining the team. They include setter/outside hitter Briana McCarthy (Fr., Beaver Dam, Wis.) and libero Anna Tengnas (Fr., Hyltebruk, Sweden). Three other upperclass student-athletes also have joined the team. Middle blocker D’wan Shackleford (5th-year senior, Newark, Ohio) comes from the Buckeye basketball squad. Libero Holly Cram (So., La Mirada, Calif.) played for the OSU women’s soccer team in 2001 while outside hitter/middle blocker Jamie Bunting (Sr., Pittsburgh, Pa.) joins the squad after three years at Arkansas. A LOOK AT BALL STATE
The Cardinals, coached by Randy Litchfield, began the season at the USC/Holiday Inn Volleyball Tournament, going 0-3. Ball State lost 3-1 (23-30, 30-25, 30-21, 30-19) to Northern Iowa, 3-2 (30-25, 22-30, 30-14, 25-30, 15-9) to South Carolina and 3-0 (30-15, 30-15, 30-18) to host Southern California. Top hitter for the Cardinals is Sarah Obras with a 5.83 kills per game average. Stacie Baldwin is averaging 9.08 assists per game while Stephanie Killer has a 3.25 digs per game average.
OSU SERIES WITH BALL STATE
Ohio State leads the series with Ball State 13-6. The Buckeyes are 6-3 in St. John Arena. OSU has won the last 12 matches. A 13th consecutive victory was later vacated.

A LOOK AT WESTERN MICHIGAN
The Broncos, coached by Cathy George, are 2-1 on the season after playing in the IKON Husky Classic. Western Michigan defeated Connecticut, 3-1 (30-17, 28-30, 30-24, 30-24) and Quinnipiac, 3-0 (30-15, 30-15, 30-19) and lost to Idaho, 3-0 (30-27, 30-28, 30-18). Carman Malone leads the team in hitting with a 3.50 kills per game average. Jessica Holly has a 9.56 assist per game average. Defensively, Katy Duffy average 4.44 digs per game with Tinesha Tierney and Shaylen Jackson averaging 2.33 and1.40 blocks per game, respectively.
OSU SERIES WITH WESTERN MICHIGAN
Western Michigan has a 3-1 lead in the series with Ohio State. The Broncos won the only match played in Columbus and has won three consecutive contests.

A LOOK AT TEMPLE
The Owls, coached by Robert Bertucci, began play this season at the North Carolina Invitational going 0-3. Temple lost 3-0 (30-22, 32-30, 30-19) to James Madison. 3-0 (30-14, 30-22, 30-15) to North Carolina and 3-1 (32-34, 30-28, 30-23, 30-22) to Oregon.

A LOOK AT GEORGIA TECH
The Yellow Jackets, coached by Bond Shymansky, won the Courtyard by Marriott Classic at home and are 3-0. Georgia Tech defeated Northwestern, 3-0 (30-22, 30-25, 37-35), Coastal Carolina, 3-0 (30-17, 30-18, 30-26) and Alabama, 3-0 (30-13, 30-16, 30-26). Lynnette Moster has a 4.44 kills per game average with Alexandra Preiss at 4.00. Kale Eveland averages 13.50 assists per game. Moster is the team leader in digs a 3.33 per game while Jayme Gergen has a 1.38 blocks per game average.

A LOOK AT CLEVELAND STATE
The Vikings, coached by Chuck Voss, won the Western New York Tournament in Buffalo over Labor Day weekend. Cleveland State went 4-0 defeating Colgate, 3-0 (30-27, 30-20, 30-24), Boston College, 3-1 (32-30, 28-30, 30-27, 30-23), Siena, 3-0 (30-24, 30-28, 30-16) and Syracuse, 3-0 (30-26, 30-23, 30-21). Jamie Bouyer is averaging a team-high 4.00 kill per game with Kelly Crain setting 11.00 assists per game. Defensively, Alisa Hatcher is averaging 3.00 digs per game and Danielle Siefker has a 2.00 blocks per game average.

Ohio State leads the series with Cleveland State, 13-10. The Buckeyes have won the last 10 meetings with the Vikings. OSU stands 7-2 in matches played in Columbus and has won six straight.

OHIO STATE TOURNAMENT HISTORY
The Buckeyes have won 19 of 27 home tournaments since 1979. Last year in the Buckeye Classic, OSU defeated Cleveland State (3-0) in the semifinals and Kent State (3-0) in the championship. It was OSU’s sixth Classic championship. In the Ohio State Invitational, OSU defeated Loyola-Chicago (3-1) in the semifinals but lost to Texas (3-0) in the championship match. Buckeye Stacey Gordon was the MVP of the Buckeye Classic and was named to the Ohio State Invitational All-Tournament team.
OSU PICKED SIXTH IN BIG TEN, GORDON PRESEASON ALL-BIG TEN
The Big Ten women’s volleyball coaches have picked Ohio State to finish sixth in their preseason poll. Minnesota was the unanimous choice to win the conference. The Gophers won the 2002 league title with a 17-3 record. Penn State, Michigan State, Wisconsin and Indiana round out the top-five teams. Stacey Gordon as a unanimous selection to the 2003 Pre-Season All-Big Ten Volleyball Team.

OSU HAS THREE TV APPEARANCES
The Big Ten announced its television schedule for women’s volleyball on both ESPN2 and FOX Sports Chicago. Ohio State will play in three of the scheduled 10 matches. OSU will face defending Big Ten champion Minnesota in one of three matches carried by ESPN2. The Saturday, Nov. 29 match in Minneapolis will be shown at 1 p.m. ET, Sunday, Nov. 30. The Buckeyes also will face the Gophers in St. John Arena Friday, Oct. 17 in a FOX Sports Chicago match to be shown at 4 p.m. ET, Sunday, Oct. 19. Ohio State’s third match is at Wisconsin, Saturday, Oct. 25. FOX Sports Chicago will carry it at 4 p.m. ET, Sunday, Oct. 26.

Briana McCarthy and Anna Tengnas comprise OSU’s freshman class. McCarthy, a setter/outside hitter, is from Beaver Dam, Wis. Tengnas, a libero, is from Hyltebruk, Sweden.
BASKETBALL’S D’wan Shackleford JOINS VOLLEYBALL SQUAD
A four-year letterwinner with the women’s basketball team, D’wan Shackleford has joined the women’s volleyball squad for her fifth and final year of eligibility. Shackleford approached the volleyball staff with regards to playing on the team. She was an all-league performer for her Newark High School volleyball team before switching to basketball. At OSU, Shackleford started 66 of 121 games she played in. She averaged 7.7 points and 4.9 rebounds for her career.
FORMER OSU SOCCER PLAYER, Holly Cram JOINS SQUAD
Holly Cram, a member of the 2001 Ohio State women’s soccer team, has returned to school and joined the volleyball squad as a libero. She played in 16 games with 13 starts for the Buckeyes in 2001.
Jamie Bunting JOINS SQUAD FROM ARKANSAS
The newest member of the Buckeye squad is Jamie Bunting (Sr., Pittsburgh, Pa.). A two-time letterwinner at Arkansas, Bunting played two-and-a-half seasons for the Razorbacks. Bunting left the team during the middle of her junior season.
UPCOMING FOR OHIO STATE
The Buckeyes will host Cleveland State at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 9 before traveling to Provo, Utah to play in the Mizuno Classic presented by Courtyard Marriott. OSU faces host Brigham Young at 7:30 p.m., Friday, Sept. 12. The Buckeyes then face Rice at 5 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 13.
