Women’s Volleyball Rallies For 3-2 Victory Over Rice – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State (4-2) women’s volleyball team, trailing Rice (6-5) 2-1 in games, rallied in games four and five to defeat the Owls, 3-2 (30-21, 27-30, 21-30, 30-27, 15-12) in the second day of play at the Mizuno Classic in Provo, Utah. Buckeye Stacey Gordon (Jr., Oshawa, Ontario), an All-Tournament selection, continued to power the offense with a match-high 32 kills. OSU’s Amanda Miller (So., Littleton, Colo.) contributed 15 kills with Heather Whalen (Sr., Kalamazoo, Mich.) adding 12. Rice’s Lindsey Carter scored a career-high 25 kills while Rebeca Pazo added 19 and Julie Jackman, 10.
Ohio State, with kills by Gordon and Katherine Grant (So., Nashville, Tenn.) opened up a 13-12 lead in game one. The Buckeyes expanded the lead to win 30-21. OSU hit .395 for the game to .282 for Rice.
Tied at 11 in game two, Rice took a 15-11 with four consecutive points. OSU rallied from tailing 17-13 to tie the game on a Katherine Grant (So., Nashville, Tenn.) kill. Tied at 19, Rice outscored OSU 8-2 to take a 27-22 lead. Trailing 29-25, OSU with a Miller kill and an Owl error cut the margin to 29-27 but a Pazo kill ended the game at 30-27. Rice hit .361 for the game to .196 for Ohio State.
Rice opened game three with three OSU errors. The Owls built up a 10-3 lead. With OSU trailing, 11-4, the Buckeye outscored the Owls, 8-2 to close to 13-12. Rice held a 17-16 lead only to outscore the Buckeyes, 13-5, to win 30-21 and take a 2-1 lead in the match. Rice hit .464 for the game to OSU’s .093.
Ohio State fell behind 7-3 in game four before two Buckeye kills from Miller, one from Briana McCarthy (Fr., Beaver Dam, Wis.) and an Owl error tied the game at seven. Tied at eight, back-to-back blocks by D’wan Shackleford (Sr., Newark, Ohio) and McCarthy gave OSU a 10-8 lead. After ties at 14, 15 and 18, a Gordon kill and an Owl error gave the Buckeyes a 20-18 lead. Rice tied the game at 24 but a Whalen kill, a Shackleford-Miller block and a Rice error opened up a 27-24 Ohio State lead. A Buckeye error cut the OSU lead to 27-25 but a McCarthy kill and a Shackleford-McCarthy block set game point at 29-25. Rice cut the lead to 29-27 but Gordon’s kill won the game at 30-27 to tie the match at two games each. The Buckeyes hit .238 for the game to .079 for Rice.
Game five opened up with five consecutive points by Rice. A Shackleford-McCarthy block and a McCarthy kill cut the lead to 5-2. Two Rice kills and one from OSU’s Gordon made it 7-3. OSU closed to 7-6 with kills from Whalen and Miller and a Whalen-Grant block. Following a Rice kill, a Whalen kill and an Owl error tied the game at eight. A Buckeye error and a Miller kill made it nine-all. Rice, with a Carter kill took a 10-9 lead, but Gordon answered with a kill to tie the game at 10. OSU took an 11-10 lead with a Shackleford-McCarthy block. Carter’s kill tied the game at 11. Gordon and Carter exchanged kills to a 12-all tie. Gordon, with a kill returned the lead to OSU at 13-12. The Buckeyes closed out the game with back-to-back blocks by Gordon and Grant to take game five, 15-12. For the game, Ohio State hit .261 to .143 for Rice.
For the match Rice outhit Ohio State, .265 to .229. The Buckeyes had an 82-68 advantage in kills while the Buckeyes had a 4-2 margin in ace serves. OSU gave up 10 service errors to nine for the Owls. Ohio State edged Rice in digs, 62-61. OSU’s Anna Tengnas (Fr., Hyltebruk, Sweden) picked up a match-high 17 digs with Gordon and Whalen adding 14 each. At the net, the Owls edged the Buckeyes 14 to 13 in blocks. OSU’s Shackleford with seven blocks (1-6) shared match-high honors with Rice’s Catherine Dupont (1-6) and Tessa Kuykendall (0-7). Buckeye setter McCarthy had a career-high 66 assists in the match while Owl Kristina Hoban recorded 60.
Ohio State faces Miami (Ohio), in Oxford, at 7 p.m. Wednesday and closes out the non-conference schedule with a 7 p.m. home contest against Bowling Green Saturday in St. John Arena.
