Women’s Lacrosse Falls 17-8 To Princeton In NCAA Championship Quarterfinals – Ohio State Buckeyes

PRINCETON, N.J. – The Ohio State (14-4) women’s lacrosse team held a 5-4 lead with 13:44 left in the first half, before Princeton (14-4) outscored the Buckeyes, 13-3, to capture a 17-8 victory in the NCAA Championship quarterfinals Sunday at the Class of 1952 Stadium in Princeton, N.J. With win advances the Tigers to the NCAA Championship semifinals next Friday in Syracuse, N.Y. OSU’s Regina Oliver (So., Pottstown, Pa.) scored a team-high three goals for the Buckeyes with Ashley Evans (So., Ellicott City, Md.) adding two. Princeton’s Theresa Sherry scored a game-high five goals for the Tigers with Lindsey Biles adding four.
Princeton opened the scoring with a Sherry goal at 1:08 gone in the game. Buckeye Shannon Wilson (Sr., Sherkston, Ontario) countered with a score at 2:05. Oliver gave OSU a 2-1 lead at 7:03. Biles tied the game at 7:23 when OSU goalie Erin Forquer (So., Shaker Heights, Ohio) stopped the shot but allowed it to get by her. Biles scored again at 8:26 to give Princeton a 3-2 lead. OSU tied the game at three with a free position goal at 10:49. Princeton regained the lead at 4-3 with goal by Mary Beth Hogan. Ashley Evans (So., Ellicott City, Md.), with an assist from Wilson tied the game at 11:56. Evans scored again at 13:44, with an assist from Tracey Bounds (Sr., Ellicott City, Md.) to give the Buckeyes a 5-4 lead as Princeton called time out. The Tigers tied the game at five with a Leigh Slonaker goal at 21:19. Sherry’s goal at 22:09 gave Princeton the lead for good at 6-5. Sherry, with a free position attempt at 24:36, opened a two-goal (7-5) lead for the Tigers. After an Ohio State timeout, Oliver scored at 25:32 to close the gap to 7-6. Tiger Elizabeth Pillion scored to make it 8-6 at 29:28 and was credited with another goal at 29:41 when her shot from behind the net was deflected into the goal to give Princeton a 9-6 halftime lead.
The Tigers started the second half by scoring six consecutive goals. Pillion made it three-in-a-row at 31:42. That was followed by a Whitney Miller goal at 34:36. Biles added a goal at 38:16 to give Princeton a 12-6 lead. OSU inserted goalie Kim Hastings (Fr., Sewickley, Pa.) at this point. Biles scored again at 38:15 to make the lead 13-6. The Tigers took the lead to 15-6 with goals from Alex Fiore (43:59) and Sherry (15:11). The Buckeyes broke the Tiger’s eight consecutive goals when Oliver scored at 48:08 with an assist from Bounds. OSU then cut the lead to 15-8 by Caroline Weatherill (Jr., Malvern, Pa.) at 49:18 on a free position attempt. Princeton responded with a Slonaker goal at 50:34. Sherry closed out the scoring for the Tigers at 51:32 for the final 17-8 victory.
In goal for Princeton, Sarah Kolodner picked up the win and recorded five saves. OSU’s Forquer recorded the loss, giving up 12 goal with only one save in 37 minutes. Hastings played the final 23 minutes giving up five goals and recording two saves.
Ohio State finishes the 2003 season with the most outstanding season in the history of the program, despite the season-ending loss. The Buckeyes won the American Lacrosse Conference championship, finished with a program record 14 wins, made its second appearance in the NCAA Championship, finished the regular season ranked 11th and advanced to the quarterfinals for the first time. The Buckeyes lose only four seniors: Wilson, Bounds, Alexia Vogler (Sr., Ellicott City, Md.) and Kimberly Lowe (Sr., Philadelphia, Pa.) and can only expect better things in 2004.
