COLUMBUS, Ohio – Tenth-ranked Ohio State (12-3 overall, 4-1 American Lacrosse Conference) used four goals each from Shannon Wilson (Sr., Sherkston, Ontario) and Regina Oliver (So., Pottstown, Pa.) to rally for a 10-9 victory over ninth-ranked Penn State (8-8, 5-1) Sunday afternoon at Jeffrey Field. Shari Maslin scored three goals and Kristen Burke, two, to lead the Nittany Lions. The Buckeye victory keeps Ohio State in the running for a share of the ALC championship. A win over Ohio University (5-9, 1-4) Thursday in Columbus, would give OSU a co-championship with Penn State.
Penn State opened the game with a 4-0 lead in the first eight minutes. Maslin opened the scoring run at 3:42. Burke made it 2-0 at 4:36 with an assist from Colleen O’Hara. A free position attempt by Jamie Donahue at 6:55 made it 3-0. Jackie Sherman’s unassisted goal at 12:07 gave Penn State a 4-0 lead. Buckeye Ashley Evans (So., Ellicott City, Md.) stopped the Penn State scoring run with a goal at 15:26. A second goal by Masline, assisted by Lori Havrilla, at 19:02, put the Nittany Lion lead back to four (5-1). A Buckeye goal by Oliver at 19:51 started a three-goal run by the Buckeyes. Caroline Weatherill (Jr., Malvern, Pa.) scored at 21:49 and with Oliver’s second goal at 25:06, cut the Penn State lead to 5-4 as the half ended.
Penn State’s O’Hara expanded the lead to 6-4 with a score at 33:21 to start the second half. OSU’s Wilson then posted three consecutive goals in less than five minutes (4:48) to give Ohio State its first lead of the game at 7-6. Wilson cut the PSU lead to 6-5 with a goal at 34:40. She scored again at 37:05 to tie the game at six. Wilson’s next goal at 39:28 put the Buckeyes ahead, 7-6. OSU’s Oliver added her third goal of the game at 42:11 to give Ohio State an 8-6 lead. Penn State responded at 46:58 with Maslin’s third goal and at 51:16 with Burke’s second goal to tie the contest at eight. Both scores were assisted by O’Hara. The Buckeyes regained the lead at 9-8 at 52:04 on Wilson’s fourth goal of the game. Penn State, on a free position attempt by Kristin Wood at 54:21 tied the game at nine. OSU’s Oliver clinched the victory (10-9) with her fourth goal of the game at 56:12. The Buckeyes held off the Nittany Lions for the final 3:48 to secure the win. OSU goalie Erin Forquer (So., Shaker Heights, Ohio) picked up her 12th win of the season while collecting eight saves against the Nittany Lions. The 12 victories sets a single season record for Ohio State. The previous win record was 11 (11-5) by Forquer last season. PSU goalie Lee Tortorelli took the loss, making six saves.
Ohio State’s 12th victory of the season sets an OSU team record for most victories in a season. The previous mark was set last season when the Buckeyes were 11-5.
The contest will be televised on a tape-delay basis on College Sports Television (CSTV) at 10:00 p.m. ET, Fri., May 2. The game will be carried by DIRECT TV channel 610.
The Buckeyes close out the regular season at 7 p.m., Thurs., May 1 with a home league contest against Ohio University.
