COLUMBUS, Ohio – Tenth-ranked Ohio State (11-3 overall) behind three goals by Shannon Wilson (Sr., Sherkston, Ontario) and two from Regina Oliver (So., Pottstown, Pa.) defeated Duquesne (9-7), 10-5, at Rooney Field Thursday night. Wilson’s three goals gives her 102 for her career and is only the third Buckeye player to have 100 or more. Megan Mirick is the career leader with 143 with Tracey Bounds (Sr., Ellicott City, Md.) second with 105. The 11 wins by the Buckeyes ties the Ohio State record for the most wins in a season set in 2002. Dukes Ginger Flocco and Alison Smith scored two goals each for Duquesne.
Ohio State opened the scoring with a Wilson goal at 8:50, assisted by Oliver. A Buckeye goal by Bounds at 9:42 and a second goal by Wilson at 11:32 gave Ohio State a 3-0 lead. Duquesne’s Ginger Flocco put the Dukes on the scoreboard at 16:33 to cut the margin to 3-1. The Buckeyes scored three more times in the half for a 6-1 lead. Oliver began the three-goal run at 20:29. OSU’s Ashley Evans (So., Ellicott City, Md.) made it 5-1 at 23:15. Buckeye Caroline Weatherill (Jr., Malvern, Pa.) closed out the scoring in the half at 24:15.
Buckeye Wilson opened the scoring in the second half at 31:48 with her third goal on a free position attempt. Duquesne responded with a score by Alison Smith at 42:53, assisted by Carrie Watkins. OSU’s Andrea Fischer (Fr., Cleveland Heights, Ohio) made the Buckeye lead, 8-2 with a goal at 45:32. Ohio State took a seven-point lead (9-2) at 52:43 with Oliver’s second goal, assisted by Molly McLaughlin (Jr., Towson, Md.). Duquesne responded with Smith’s second goal of the game at 53:39 to cut the margin to 9-3. Buckeye Megan Stickler (So., Hudson, Ohio), scored on a free position attempt at 55:58 giving OSU a 10-3 lead. Duquesne closed out the scoring with goals by Lauren Mincher, assisted by Laura App, at 57:06 and Flocco’s second goal, assisted by Watkins, at 58:02 for a final score of, 10-5, Ohio State.
Duquesne’s Sarah Pacini recorded 19 assists in the game for the Dukes. Ohio State’s Erin Forquer (So., Shaker Heights, Ohio) played the first half (30:00) recording four saves while giving up one goal and collecting her 11th win of the season. That equals the OSU season record set by Forquer in 2002. Kim Hastings (Fr., Sewickley, Pa) started the second half collecting one save and giving up one goal, while Taryn Bowen (Jr., Columbus, Ohio) finished out the game (7:17), giving up three goals.
The Buckeyes return to league action in the American Lacrosse Conference at noon, Sun, April 27 at No. 9 Penn State.
