COLUMBUS, Ohio – The ninth-ranked Ohio State (10-3, 3-1 American Lacrosse Conference) women’s lacrosse will play twice on the road in the next week. The Buckeyes travel to Duquesne (9-6) for a 7 p.m. game on Thursday. OSU then returns to conference play when it faces No. 10 Penn State (7-6, 4-0) at noon Sunday. The Penn State game will be delayed telecast by CSTV on DIRECTV channel 610 at 10 p.m., Fri. May 2.
A LOOK AT OHIO STATE
Sue Stimmel coaches the Buckeyes. Ohio State has a 10-3 overall record and is 3-1 in the American Lacrosse Conference. OSU is ranked ninth in the IWLCA poll this week. The Buckeyes lost, 12-11, in double-overtime to No. 17 Vanderbilt last Sunday. Shannon Wilson (Sr., Sherkston, Ontario) is OSU’s top goal scorer with 29. Regina Oliver (So., Pottstown, Pa.) is second in goals with 28. Tracey Bounds (Sr., Ellicott City, Md.) stands third with 20 and KC Carter (Fr., Birchrunville, Pa.) fourth with 16. Oliver has a team-high 12 assists with Bounds second with 11. Oliver has team-highs in caused turnovers with 37 and draw controls with 36. Bounds leads the team in ground balls with 59. In goal, Erin Forquer (So., Shaker Heights, Ohio) is 10-2 with a 6.81 goals against average and a .568 saves percentage.
A LOOK AT DUQUESNE
Kim Eldridge coaches the Dukes. Duquesne has an overall record of 9-6. The Dukes lost home games last week to Temple (14-8) and Massachusetts (11-5). Ginger Flocco has a team-high 40 goals this season with Kelly Mulford second with 32. Flocco is the team leader in assists with 13 while Becca West and Lauren Mincher have 12 each. Christi Madden has a team-high 39 ground balls with Krista Mann second with 37. Flocco also leads the team in draw controls with 51 and caused turnovers with 37. Mann is second in both categories with 36 draw controls and 34 caused turnovers. Sarah Pacini has had most of the time in goal, starting 14 of 15 games with a 7-6 record. She has a 9.70 goals against average and a .543 saves percentage. Shelley Rank has one start in six appearances and has a 2-0 record. Rank has a 7.60 goals against average and a .655 saves percentage.
THE SERIES WITH DUQUESNE
Ohio State has a 5-1 series record with Duquesne. The Buckeyes won the first four meetings starting in 1997, an 18-7 win at Duquesne. At home, OSU won 14-2 in 1998. The Buckeyes, at Duquesne, won 13-12 in 1999 and won 19-3 at home in 2000. Duquesne picked up a 14-12 victory at home in 2001. Last season, in Columbus, the Buckeyes won 18-5 in the season opener.
A LOOK AT PENN STATE
Suzanne Isidor coaches the Nittany Lions. Penn State has a 7-6 overall record and is 4-0 in the American Lacrosse Conference prior to games at Georgetown on Wednesday and at home Friday against Ohio University. Last week, the Nittany Lions lost 13-9 at home to Pennsylvania and defeated Northwestern, 12-7, on the road. Colleen O’Hara leads the team in goal scoring with 26. Kristen Burke is second with 23 with Katie Jeschke and Shari Maslin tied for third with 22. O’Hara has a team-high 17 assists. Stephanie Curnoles and Lee Tortorelli share team-high honors with 34 ground balls each. Emily Chambers is the team leader in draw controls with 24. Maslin and Curnoles are tied for second with 23 each. Liz Frande has a team-high 13 caused turnovers with Curnoles second with 11. Tortorelli has all 13 starts in goal and has a 7-6 record. She has a 9.31 goals against average and a .562 save percentage.
THE SERIES WITH PENN STATE
The Nittany Lions have a 5-1 lead in the series with Ohio State. The first match in the series was in 1998, a 14-3 Penn State win in Columbus. The Nittany Lions won 10-8 at home in 1999. Penn State won at home, 16-5, in 2000. At Penn State in 2001, PSU won 15-10. Last season, Ohio State won, 15-12, at home.
BOUNDS BECOMES OSU CAREER LEADER IN ASSISTS
A six-point game, including four assists, against Vanderbilt has made Tracey Bounds the OSU career leader in assists with 52. She moved from fourth place by passing Mara Simpson (1996-99) with 49, Laurie Rybak (1996-99) with 50 and Celeste Cianfrani (1998-01) with 51. Bounds has 11 assists on the season and with 20 goals (ranking third) has 31 points, ranking third on the squad. She has a team-high 59 ground balls and ranks fourth in the country with a 4.54 per game average.
WILSON ONE SHY OF 100 CAREER GOALS
With her four goals against Vanderbilt, Shannon Wilson now has 99 career goals. Her next score would make her only the third Buckeye to reach 100 career goals. Megan Mirick in the career leader in goals with 143. Wilson’s teammate Tracey Bounds is second with 104.
WILSON MOVES TO THIRD IN OSU CAREER POINTS
With four goals against Vanderbilt, Shannon Wilson now has 141 career points (99-42). The four goals moved her to third in OSU career points passing Celeste Cianfrani (1998-2000) with 138. Wilson also moved to fourth in career draw controls with 51. She passed Alexia Vogler (Sr., Ellicott City, Md.) with 50.
OLIVER NOW TIED FOR EIGHTH IN CAREER ASSISTS
Two assists against Vanderbilt have given Regina Oliver 24 in her career. Those assists have moved her to a tie for eighth in OSU careers assists with Erin Andersen (1998-01). She had been tied for ninth with Lorena Opitz (1996-98) with 22. Oliver is also ranked ninth in goals (56) and points (80). She is third in draw controls with 60 and third in caused turnovers with 88.
WILLIAMS HAS TEAM-HIGH FIVE GROUND BALLS AGAINST VANDERBILT
Brandie Williams (So., Hatboro, Pa.) collected five ground balls in the contest against Vanderbilt. It marked the third time (Vanderbilt, California and Maryland) this season she has recorded five ground balls in a game. Williams ranks third on the team in ground balls with 41.
OSU MOVES TO TENTH IN IWLCA POLL
The Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association has ranked Ohio State tenth in the national poll released this week. The Buckeyes fell one spot in the poll after a 12-11 double-overtime loss to Vanderbilt. Loyola (13-0) continues to hold the top spot in the poll.
OHIO STATE IN THE AMERICAN LACROSSE CONFERENCE STATISTICS
OSU’s Erin Forquer (So., Shaker Heights, Ohio) continues to lead the American Lacrosse Conference statistically in both goals against average (6.81) and saves percentage (.568). Regina Oliver is fourth in scoring (3.08 points per game) and Shannon Wilson is sixth (2.77) with Tracey Bounds ninth (2.38). Wilson is third in goals per game (2.23) with Oliver tied for fourth (2.15). In assists per game, Oliver ranks fifth at .92 with Bounds six at .85. In draw controls per game, Oliver is second (2.77) with KC Carter tied for seventh (1.77). Bounds ranks first in ground balls at 4.54 per game. Oliver is second at 3.77 with Brandie Williams fourth at 3.15. In caused turnovers per game, Oliver ranks second (2.85) with Kim Lowe (Sr., Philadelphia, Pa.) tied for third at 1.92 and Williams ninth at 1.54. The Buckeyes top the ALC in team defense giving up 6.96 goals per game. OSU is third in team offense with a 10.82 goals per game average. Ohio State is second in ground balls at 31.93 per game and third in draw controls with 10.29 per game.
OHIO STATE IN THE NCAA NATIONAL STATISTICS
In the national statistics released this week by the NCAA, Ohio State is ranked seventh in the country in defense with a 7.08 goals against average. The Buckeyes are tenth nationally in ground balls with a 32.46 per game average. Individually, Erin Forquer ranks fifth in goals against average (6.81) and ninth in save percentage (.568). Tracey Bounds is fourth in the country in ground balls with a 4.54 per game average. Regina Oliver is seventh in caused turnovers (2.85) and 17th in ground balls (3.77).
OSU SETS WIN STREAK WITH VICTORY OVER NORTH CAROLINA
Ohio State’s 10-8 victory over ninth-ranked North Carolina was the seventh consecutive win for the Buckeyes after a season opening loss to Stanford. The seven wins equals the longest winning streak in the history of Ohio State women’s lacrosse that was set in 2002. In that season, the Buckeyes won its first six games of the season before falling to fifth-ranked North Carolina, 12-7.
MIRICK MOVES FROM PLAYER TO COACH
Megan Mirick has ended her playing career with Ohio State, but has moved to the role of assistant coach for the Buckeyes. Mirick ended her four-year career with 143 goals and 182 points, both Ohio State career records. She held the career goals record from the 2001 season and set the career points record in 2003.
HEAD COACH SUE STIMMEL
Sue Stimmel is in her eighth season as the head coach for the Ohio State women’s lacrosse team. A 1984 graduate of Temple University, Stimmel is the only coach that the Buckeye program has had. She spent six years has the head coach of Denison prior to coming to Ohio State. Stimmel is 64-49 at Ohio State and is 140-67 in her 14-year career. The 2002 season was her most successful with a program-high 11 wins and finishing the regular season ranked 12th nationally.
