COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ninth-ranked Ohio State (10-3 overall, 3-1 American Lacrosse Conference) gave up a goal to Commodore Mary McCeney (Jr., Baltimore, Md.) at 66:58 in sudden-victory to drop a 12-11 decision to No. 17 Vanderbilt (7-6, 4-2) Sunday afternoon in Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. OSU’s Shannon Wilson (Sr., Sherkston, Ontario) tallied a game-high four times for the Buckeyes with KC Carter (Fr., Birchrunville, Pa) adding three and Tracey Bounds (Sr., Ellicott City, Md.) two. Vanderbilt’s Michelle Allen (Jr., Eldersburg, Md.), Lauren Peck (Jr., Arnold, Md.) and Jeannie Crawley (Sr., Darien, Conn.) each accounted for three goals with McCeney adding two.
The Commodores opened the scoring with a Peck goal at 5:27. OSU’s Wilson responded at 5:41 with an assist from Bounds. Vanderbilt made it 2-1 on a free position shot by Allen at 9:50. Ohio State then ran off five goals to close out the half and hold a 6-2 lead. Carter tied the game at two at 10:21 on an assist from Regina Oliver (So., Pottstown, Pa.). OSU took a 3-2 lead on Carter’s second goal at 10:46 with an assist to Ashley Evans (So., Ellicott City, Md.). Bounds scored OSU’s next two goals, the first at 14:44, unassisted and the second at 17:43 on a free position shot. Carter’s third goal of the half, with an assist to Bounds, came at 27:54 to close out the half.
Vanderbilt’s Crawley scored at 33:11 from a Kelly Devlin (Jr., Baltimore, Md.) pass to open the scoring in the second half. Crawley scored again at 37:58 to cut OSU’s lead to 6-4. The Commodores, with Peck’s second goal at 40:58, assisted by Crawley, and a Jess Roguski (Jr., Baltimore, Md.) goal at 46:32 tied the game at six. Ohio State regained the lead at 7-6 with an unassisted Oliver goal at 47:25. OSU’s Wilson scored the next two goals to give the Buckeyes a 9-6 lead. She scored at 47:57, with an assist from Bounds, and at 48:32, unassisted. Vanderbilt responded at 50:35 with Allen’s second goal, assisted by Tara Schmucker (Sr., Jamison, Pa.). The Buckeyes took the lead back to three at 10-7 with an Evans goal at 52:09, assisted by Oliver. VU’s McCeney, on a free position shot, started a three-goal run by the Commodores at 53:23. Allen made it 10-9 on a free position shot at 54:19. Peck’s goal, assisted by Allen, at 59:43 tied the game at 10, sending the contest into overtime.
In the first three-minute overtime period, Vanderbilt worked for a final shot and scored with five seconds left in the period at 62:55 by Crawley, her third goal. In the second three-minute overtime period, The Commodores attempted to run down the clock, but lost possession with 40 seconds left in the period. With 20 seconds left in the overtime (65:40), Wilson’s fourth goal of the game tied the score at 11 off a Bounds’ pass.
The game moved to a three minute, sudden-victory overtime period. McCeney scored the game winner off a pass from Allen at 66:58 to secure the win.
Ohio State will be on the road next week with a 7 p.m., Thurs., April 24 game at Duquesne and then faces No. 10 Penn State at noon, Sun., April 27.
