COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State will look to ride the momentum of a team sweep in the 2003 All-Ohio Track and Field Championships at the Pacesetter Invitational set to be held at Indiana State University Friday and Saturday.

TAYLOR ATHLETE OF THE WEEK X 5
Dan Taylor was named Tuesday as the Big Ten Conference Men’s Track and Field Athlete of the Week following his three-event sweep of the discus, hammer and shot put at the All-Ohio Track and Field Championship last Friday and Saturday at OSU’s Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.
Taylor, deemed Big Ten Co-Athlete of the Week two weeks ago, established another OSU mark as he eclipsed the all-time Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium standard in the men’s shot put with a distance of 65-6.25. With the record-setting effort, the junior placed first and qualified for NCAA Regional competition set for May 30 and 31 at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. In all, Taylor scored first place regional qualifiers in each of the throw events as he recorded a 204-6 in the hammer and a 180-8 effort in the discus.
BUCKEYES CLAIM ALL-OHIO TITLES
The OSU men’s team defended its 2002 title besting the 13-ohio collegiate team field with 196 team points. The women also claimed first with 156.5 team points.
The Ohio State throw squad contributed heavily to the team total with 10-point first place performances in the men’s shot put and men’s and women’s discus events as Dan Taylor claimed all three titles, while Amarchi Ukabam scored a career-best 169-10 to capture first and a regional qualifier in the women’s discus. Veteran throwers Krista Keir (165-7) and Alexis McCall (153-1) followed Ukabam with second and fourth place efforts. Both McCall and Keir earned regional bids.
Ohio State took 1-2 in the women’s 100-meter hurdles as sophomore Molly Logan placed first with a 13.39, while fellow sophomore Brandi Hogan fell just behind Logan with a 13.65. In all, five hurdlers qualified for regional competition in the event as seniors Joel Brown (13.88) and Dalanda Jackson (13.90) posted bids in the preliminary rounds, while Nicholette Chambers scored a 1:01.07 in the 400-meter hurdles.
Sprinter John Morris bested the event-field in the 400-meter dash with a 48.30 to score 10 points, as did 100-meter sprinter Greg Norman as he placed first with a regional qualifying time of 10.48. In the 200-meter dash, Ohio State posted a sweep of the event as Hogan topped the field with a 24.38, while Brown took first with a 21.20 regional qualifier.
The Buckeyes also scored well in the jumps as juniors Billy Mills (6-9.50) and Jeff Cerveny (6-9.50) posted regional marks to place second and third in the men’s high jump, while sophomores Rosalind Goodwin and Shayla Moore added a 1-2 finish in the women’s triple jump as Goodwin posted a 42-2 to top Moore, who recorded a 41-10.75. Junior Nosa Ehimwenman completed the sweep of the triple jump with a 51-2.75. All three triple jump marks serve as regional qualifiers and 2003 bests for Moore, Goodwin and Ehimwenman.
TRIPLE PLAY: TAYLOR, UKABAM QUALIFY FOR THREE NCAA EVENTS
Following the All-Ohio Championships both junior Dan Taylor and freshman Amarachi Ukabam have regionally qualified in three throw events. Each has earned bids to compete in the event held at Ohio State’s Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium May 30 and 31.
Joining Taylor and Ukabam as multiple-event qualifiers are seniors Joel Brown, Dalanda Jackson and Krista Keir, and junior Alexis McCall. Both Keir and McCall have qualified in the shot put and discus events, while Brown and Jackson have earned bids in the 110 and 100-meter hurdles, respectively. Jackson adds a second hurdles event in the 400m. Brown earned a bid in the 200-meter dash with a 21.20 at the Alll-Ohio Championships.

TAYLOR SNAPS OWN OSU RECORDS, TOPS MARK AT JESSE OWENS STADIUM
For the third-straight week OSU thrower Dan Taylor established an Ohio State program record. After setting Ohio State standards in the discus (187-4) and hammer throw (205-7) at the Ohio State Relays April 5, the junior indoor All-American set a Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium record with a 65-6.25 first place effort in the men’s shot put.
UKABAM HONORED BY BIG TEN
Ohio State freshman thrower Amarachi Ukabam was deemed Big Ten Athlete of the Week Tuesday after claiming first place in both the women’s shot put and the hammer throw Saturday at the 2003 Ohio State Relays.
Ukabam scored a career-best 49-7 to win the women’s shot put adding her second regional qualifying mark in the event this season, while also claiming first in the women’s discus with another regional mark of 159-6.
Ukabam, who posted a team and personal-best 169-7 in the hammer at the Arizona State Invitational, joins fellow thrower Dan Taylor and hurdlers Joel Brown and Molly Logan as Big Ten honorees for the 2003 indoor and outdoor seasons.
HAPPY RETURNS
The Baldy Castillo Invitational March 21 and 22 marked the returns of a pair of Ohio State All-American performers in senior Dalanda Jackson and junior George Hoover.
Hoover, the 2000 and 2001 conference champion in the javelin, posted a 209-4 in his first collegiate event since the 2001 NCAA championships at the Baldy Castillo and topped that effort with a 211-11 to lead the field at the Arizona State Invitational.
Jackson, an All-American in 2002, captured first place in either the 100-meter hurdles or the 400m hurdles in each of the first three weeks of competition. Her 101:38 effort in the 400-meter hurdles at the ASU Invite serves as a regional qualifier, as did her 13.90 in the 100-meter hurdles prelims at the All-Ohio Championships.
KEIR AND TAYLOR SNAP OSU MARKS
Dan Taylor, who posted an all-time mark in the weight throw during the indoor season, bested the OSU program mark in the hammer throw at the ASU Invite with a 204-10 to top the 201-5 effort recorded by Justin Cavinee in 2001. Taylor has since topped his own mark with a 205-4 in the hammer at the Ohio State Relays. In addition, Taylor scored a school-best 187-4 to eclipse his own school mark in the discus at the same event.
Senior thrower Krista Keir claimed the Ohio State program record besting her own 182-4 mark set in 2002 in the discus competition at the Baldy Castillo Invitational. She posted a 186-1 to place first in the event.
26 BUCKEYES EARN BIDS TO 2003 NCAA REGIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS
Through four events of the 2003 outdoor season 26 Ohio State student-athletes have posted NCAA regional qualifying marks.
Included in that list are 2002 Indoor All-Americans Dalanda Jackson (400-meter hurdles and 100-meter hurdles), Tami Smith (high jump) and three-time qualifier George Hoover (Javelin).
Six Buckeyes have qualified in multiple events as Dan Taylor and Amarachi Ukabam have posted qualifiers in the shot put, discus and hammer throw.
In all, the throwers lead the way with an impressive 12 qualifying scores, while the jumpers have added seven of their own.
2001 PACESETTER INVITATIONAL
Ohio State last competed in the event in 2001 as the OSU men dominated the Pacesetter Invite, winning the meet with a total of 235.5 points. Indiana State scored 172 points to claim second, while the women ended the competition with 186 points, only nine behind first place Indiana State.
Joel Brown shattered his previous best on 110-meter high hurdles recording a time of 14.19 seconds in the event to take second. The 4×400-meter relay team managed to shave almost five full seconds off its previous high, recording a time of 3:10.06 in the event to take first. Also setting season highs were Brad Hart in the high jump (2.08 meters), and Dan Taylor (Fr., Middlefield, Ohio) on discus with marks of 51.70 meters. Buckeyes won nine of the 21 events and finished second in another five. Rob Myers and Ian Conner swept the Top 2 spots in the 800-meter run with times of 1:54.50 and 1:55.41, respectively.
On the women’s side, Donica Merriman raced to a provisional qualifying time of 11.55 to claim first place. Teammate Onica Fraser took first in both the 200 and the 400-meter dash.
Katy Craig won the discus and the hammer throw events with ease. Craig set personal season highs in both, posting marks of 45.96 meters in discus and 58.86 meters in hammer throw. Also setting a personal season high was Alexis McCall as she won the shot put competition with a toss of 14.74 meters. Molly Logan took first in the 400-meter hurdles (1:04.71) and placed third in the 100-meter hurdles (14:47) behind Brandi Hogan’s time of 14.17.
ASSISTANT COACH ROBERT GARY PLACES AT U.S. 8K
Ohio State cross country head coach Robert Gary (Ohio State, 1996) finished 11th at the 2003 United States 8K Championships Saturday in New York City’s Central Park.
Running against one of the strongest and deepest fields put together for a USA national championship, Gray clocked 23:09 in wet conditions over the rolling 4.97-mile course. Olympian and pre race favorite Meb Keflezighi missed the course record by two seconds to win in 22:28.
Former Ohio State distance great and Olympian Mark Croghan, Gary’s training partner, finished 17th posting a mark of 23:16.
TAYLOR EARNS USTA WEEKLY AWARD
Dan Taylor was named Friday as the United States Track and Field Coaches Association Athlete of the Week for March 6. Taylor earned the honor with a Big Ten record-setting performance to win the conference weight throw title, which he combined with a first place finish in the shot put.
OSU SWEEPS FEB. 25 BIG TEN ATHLETE OF THE WEEK HONORS
Ohio State sprinter/hurdlers Joel Brown and Molly Logan set new Ohio State program records with a sweep of the hurdles events Saturday at the Scarlet and Gray Invitational en route to claiming Big Ten Track and Field Athlete of the Week awards for Feb. 25.
Brown set a new Ohio State indoor record with a 7.18 mark in the 55m hurdles in the Scarlet and Gray Invitational, while Logan provisionally qualified for national competition with a new French Field House record 7.68 mark in the 55m hurdles.
With the weekly award, Brown and Logan join Ohio State thrower and three-time conference honoree Dan Taylor for a total of five Big Ten Track and Field Athlete of the Week merits during the 2003 indoor season.
NEXT WEEK’S SLATE
The Buckeyes head east as one division of a split squad will compete at the Penn Relays Thurdsay, April 24 through Saturday, April 26. Those not making the trip to the Penn Relays will participate in the Baldwin Wallace Invitational in Berea, Ohio Saturday, April 26.
Events at the Baldwin Wallace Invitational are set to commence at 8 a.m., while the Penn Relays will run all day during all three days of action.
