COLUMBUS, Ohio – A four-goal performance by Shannon Wilson (Sr., Sherkston, Ontario) helped 11th-ranked Ohio State (10-2 overall) to a 12-6 victory over California (8-4) Sunday afternoon in Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. OSU’s KC Carter (Fr., Birchrunville, Pa.) added three goals for the Buckeyes while Molly Brady (So., Madison, Ct.) had three goals for the Bears.
Ohio State got on the scoreboard with just 22 seconds gone in the contest with a goal by Wilson. At 13:57 California’s Jessica Liu (Sr., Lexington, Ma.) on an assist from Julianne Wu (Jr., Denver, Colo.) tied the game at one. The Buckeyes responded at 22:01 with a unassisted Regina Oliver (So., Pottstown, Pa.) goal. Thirty-five seconds later at 22:36, Carter scored on a pass from Wilson. Carter added a second goal on a pass from Tracey Bounds (Sr., Ellicott City, Md.) at 24:17 to take a 4-1 lead. California closed out the scoring in the half at 26:17 with a Colleen O’Mara (Jr., Camillus, N.Y.) goal, assisted by Brady to make it 4-2.
OSU’s Wilson scored the first two goals of the second half. She connected on a free position attempt at 31:53 and scored her third goal at 32:06, unassisted. The Bears cut the margin to 6-3 with a Brady goal at 32:35. The Buckeyes followed with an Andrea Fischer (Fr., Cleveland Heights, Ohio) goal at 39:43, on a pass from Melissa Sands (So., Fallston, Md.). OSU’s Carter scored her third goal of the game at 44:54 on a pass from Bounds. At 45:14 Bounds scored to give OSU a 9-3 lead off an assist by Fischer. California stopped the run at 52:24 with a Kally Perkins (Fr., Wayne, Pa.) goal, assisted by O’Mara. Wilson collected her fourth goal of the game for the Buckeyes at 53:38, unassisted. OSU’s Ashley Evans (So., Ellicott City, Md.) got on the scoreboard at 54:37. Evans then assisted on Alexia Vogler’s (Sr., Ellicott City, Md.) goal at 55:52 to give Ohio State a 12-4 lead. California would close out the scoring with two goals by Brady at 59:24 and 59:36 to reach the final score of 12-6. OSU’s Erin Forquer (So., Shaker Heights, Ohio) picked up her 10th win of the season in goal collecting 15 saves while giving up six goals. Cal’s Eden Coelho (Sr., Needham, Ma.) had 12 saves in the loss, giving up 12 goals.
Ohio State returns to league play in the American Lacrosse Conference next Sunday at 1 p.m. when the Buckeyes will host Vanderbilt. California returns home to face UC Davis at 4 p.m. next Saturday.
