No. 3 Men’s Gymnastics Places Second at NCAA Championships – Ohio State Buckeyes

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The No. 3 Ohio State men’s gymnastics team posted a second-place 220.7 Saturday at the Liacouras Center in Philadelphia, Pa. Defending nationals champions No. 1 Oklahoma took the national title with 222.6 points and No. 2 Penn State rounded out the Top 3 with 219.95 points. Defending all-around national champion Raj Bhavsar (Sr Houston, Texas) posted a team season-high 55.3 to place second behind Nissen-Emery Award winner Daniel Furney of Oklahoma, who compiled 56.1 points. Randy Monahan (So., Elizabethtown, Pa.), who placed fourth in the all-around with a career-high 54.55, and Bhavsar earned All-American honors by placing in the Top 6 on all-around. Ohio State advanced six gymnast to perform eight routines the event finals set for the same venue at 2 p.m. Sunday.
A tape-delay broadcast of the national championship event will be aired on ESPN at 3:30 Monday April 13. Chris Marlow will be the play-by-play announcer and Bart Connor will provide the color commentary.
Ohio State began the meet on parallel bars where they posted a season-high 36.5 to land in second place and to finish the first rotation in third place behind Illinois and Michigan. The Buckeyes faltered on high bar where they only compiled 35.6 points, 1.2 points below average and 1.65 below their season high. Ohio State entered floor in fifth place but regained third (behind Oklahoma and Penn State) after scoring a first-place 36.95 points. At the end of the third rotation, Ohio State was in third place, 2.525 points behind first place Oklahoma.
The Buckeyes started the second half of the meet on pommel horse where they posted a season-high third-place 36.965 to move within 0.45 points of second-place Penn State but Oklahoma extended its first place lead to 3.025 points. Ohio State moved into second place after posting a second-place 37.775 on rings and in the sixth and final rotation, the Buckeyes secured second place by recording a third-place 36.9 on vault. Individuals placing in the Top 8 in an event qualified for the event finals. On floor Kerry Adderly (So., Orlando, Fla.) scored a fifth-place 9.375 and Cody Trobaugh (So., Dallas, Texas) posted a sixth-place 9.275 to qualify. Ryan Schwartzkopf ( Sr., Columbus, Ind.) and Bhavsar tied for sixth place on pommel horse with a qualifying score of 9.45. Three Buckeyes qualified three student-athletes on rings with Bhavsar scoring a fourth-place 9.55 and Trobaugh and Monahan posting an eighth-place 9.45. On parallel bars, Bhavsar placed third with a 9.35 and Ronald Ferris (Fr., Austintown, Ohio) qualified with an eighth-place 9.1. Ohio State did not qualify any student-athletes on vault or high bar.
