COLUMBUS, Ohio – Trailing 10-9 in overtime, Ohio State (9-2 overall) rallied for the third time in the contest to upset seventh-ranked Cornell (7-2) with an Alexia Vogler (Sr., Ellicott City, Md.) goal with two seconds remaining. The Buckeyes overcame 3-0 and 9-6 Cornell leads in regulation to force the overtime. OSU’s Regina Oliver (So., Pottstown, Pa.) and Ashley Evans (So., Ellicott City, Md.) shared team-high honors with three goals each for the Buckeyes while Sarah Averson had a game-high four goals for Cornell.
Cornell opened the scoring with three quick goals in a period of one minute and 31 seconds. Sarah Averson scored on a free position attempt at 10:07 with scores by Lindsay Steinberg (10:36) and Erica Holveck (11:38) to take a 3-0 lead. Ohio State rallied with five goals over the next 10 minutes. Evans put OSU on the scoreboard at 13:02. Goals by Oliver (14:12) and a second by Evans (16:05) tied the game at three. The Buckeyes took a 4-3 lead at 18:07 with a goal by Caroline Weatherill (Jr., Malvern, Pa.). OSU made it 5-3 at 21:15 with a Tracey Bounds (Sr., Ellicott City, Md.) goal. Cornell’s Averson second her second goal at 29:00 to cut the margin to 5-4 as the half ended.
Averson scored her third goal of the game to open the second half at 37:17 with an assist from Julia Hughey to tie the game at five. OSU’s Brandie Williams (So., Hatboro, Pa.) gave the Buckeyes a 6-5 lead with a score at 38:02. Cornell responded with a goal by Sarah Fischer at 43:10 to tie the game at six. The Big Red took a 7-6 lead at 44:48 with a Jamie Quinn goal, assisted by Fischer. Cornell expanded the lead with Averson’s fourth goal at 45:36 to 8-6. The Big Red made it 9-6 at 49:47 with a Lindsey Steinberg score. For the second time in the contest, the Buckeyes rallied beginning with a free position goal by Oliver, her second score of the game, at 51:50. OSU’s Evans scored her third goal of the game at 55:53 to cut the Cornell lead to one at 9-8. With just 66 second left in regulation, OSU’s Oliver connected for her third goal of the game at 58:54 to tie the contest at nine. In the final minute of the period, Cornell would have one shot on goal but OSU’s Erin Forquer (So., Shaker Heights, Ohio) made the stop to set up overtime. The overtime, played in two-three minute periods, saw no scoring in the first period. In the second period, Cornell controlled the draw and took a 10-9 lead at 64:35 on a shot by Quinn for her second goal of the game. Ohio State controlled the draw and quickly tied the game at 10 on a Shannon Wilson (Sr., Sherkston, Ontario) goal with an assist from Vogler at 64:57. The Big Red controlled the following draw and maintained possession until Bounds caused a turnover with 24 seconds left. Williams recovered the ground ball with 18 seconds in the period. Oliver found Vogler for a shot with two seconds left (65:58) to score the winning goal.
In goal, OSU’s Forquer had nine saves in the victory, her ninth of the season. Cornell’s Ashley Charron recorded six saves in the loss.
This was OSU’s fourth win over a higher ranked team this season and the Buckeye’s second over a top-10 squad.
Ohio State returns home for a 3 p.m. Sun., April 13 contest against California (8-3). The game is part of a doubleheader with the men’s squad who will host Fairfield at noon.
