COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 18th-ranked Ohio State (1-1) women’s lacrosse squad returns to the road for a Sunday contest against Lafayette (0-1) at 1 p.m., Sunday, March 9. The Buckeyes opened the season with an 11-10 loss to Stanford at home and then went on the road to defeat 19th-ranked Richmond, 7-6.
A LOOK AT OHIO STATE
The Buckeyes, coached by Sue Stimmel, have a 1-1 overall record and are ranked 18th in the IWLCA poll this week. OSU opened the 2003 season with an 11-10 loss at home to Stanford and then defeated 19th-ranked Richmond, 7-6, on the road. Shannon Wilson (Sr., Sherkston, Ontario) is OSU’s top goal scorer with seven with Tracey Bounds (Sr., Ellicott City, Md.) second with four and Regina Oliver (So., Pottstown, Pa.) third with three. Oliver has a team-high three assists while Wilson is the team leader in points with eight. Oliver has team-highs in ground balls with 16 and caused turnovers with 11. Brandie Williams (So., Hatboro, Pa.) has a team-high seven draw controls. In goal, Kim Hastings (Fr., Sewickley, Pa.) and Erin Forquer (So., Shaker Heights, Ohio) have both played a full game. Hastings took the loss against Stanford giving up 11 goals and recording six saves. Forquer had the win at Richmond allowing six goals and collecting five saves.
A LOOK AT LAFAYETTE
The Leopards, coached by Rebecca Joseph, are 0-1 this season after losing 20-1 at 15th-ranked James Madison last Saturday. In 2002 Lafayette had a 13-7 record. The Leopards are scheduled to play at top-ranked Princeton Wednesday and at Villanova Friday before hosting the Buckeyes Sunday.
THE SERIES WITH LAFAYETTE
This will be the first meeting with Lafayette.
BOUNDS MOVES TO SECOND IN CAREER GOALS
With a goal against Stanford and three at Richmond last weekend, Tracey Bounds now has 88 career goals for the Buckeyes and has moved to second on the OSU career goals list. She has passed Mara Simpson (1996-99) with 84, Lauren Cochran (1999-2002) with 86 and Celeste Cianfrani (1998-01) with 87. Bounds is fourth in career points with 130. She stands four points behind No. 3 Simpson with 134.
OLIVER HAS OUTSTANDING WEEKEND
Last weekend, Regina Oliver had three goals and three assists in OSU’s two games. She had two goals and two assists against Stanford and added a goal and an assist at Richmond. She also produced 16 ground balls, 11 caused turnovers and had five draw controls in the two contests.
WILSON’S MOVES TO SEVENTH IN CAREER GOALS
With five goals against Stanford and two at Richmond, Shannon Wilson now has 77 career goals and has moved to seventh on the OSU career goals list. She passed Laurie Rybak (1996-99) with 69.
FORQUER NETS WIN IN GOAL AGAINST RICHMOND
In goal for the Buckeyes against Richmond was Erin Forquer. She gave Ohio State a 7-6 win over the Spiders with a five save performance while adding two ground balls. It was her 12th career win.
FRESHMAN CARTER HAS TWO STARTS, SCORES TWO GOALS
Freshman middle KC Carter (Birchrunville, Pa.) started both matches last week and scored goals in both contests. Carter also had three ground balls, one caused turnover and three draw controls on the weekend.
FRESHMAN GOALIE HASTING HAS FIRST START
Kim Hastings started in goal in OSU’s opening game against Stanford last week. In the 11-10 loss, Hastings had six saves and recorded one ground ball in her first start.
OSU RANKED 11TH IN IWLCA PRESEASON POLL
The Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association has ranked Ohio State 18th in the poll released this week. The Buckeyes dropped from 11th in the preseason poll after being edged 11-10 by Stanford and defeating 19th-ranked Richmond. OSU received 39 points in the poll. Princeton continues to hold down the top spot in the poll.
MIRICK MOVES FROM PLAYER TO COACH
Megan Mirick has ended her playing career with Ohio State, but has moved to the role of assistant coach for the Buckeyes. Mirick ended her four-year career with 143 goals and 182 points, both Ohio State career records. She held the career goals record from the 2001 season and set the career points record in 2003.
HEAD COACH SUE STIMMEL
Sue Stimmel is in her eighth season as the head coach for the Ohio State women’s lacrosse team. A 1984 graduate of Temple University, Stimmel is the only coach that the Buckeye program has had. She spent six years has the head coach of Denison prior to coming to Ohio State. Stimmel is 55-47 at Ohio State and is 131-65 in her 14-year career. The 2002 season was her most successful with a program-high 11 wins and finishing the regular season ranked 12th nationally.
UPCOMING FOR THE BUCKEYES
Ohio State returns home after two weekend road contests to host 15th-ranked Johns Hopkins at 7 p.m., Friday, March 14 and Virginia Tech at 1 p.m., Sunday, March 16. Both matches are scheduled in Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.
