Rowing Takes Two of Three vs. Stanford to Close Competition at Windermere Crew Classic – Ohio State Buckeyes

Columbus, OH – The Buckeye second varsity 8 and first varsity 4 posted victories vs. Stanford, Sunday, to take two of three races on the final day of the Windermere Crew Classic in Redwood Shores, Calif. The second 8 posted its first victory of the season, while the first 4 completed its weekend with a 2-1 mark.
The second varsity 8 jumped out to an early lead and pulled away in the final 1000 meters, finishing in six minutes, 50.02 seconds and taking the race by 4.88 seconds. The Buckeyes’ second 8 returns home after posting a 1-2 mark on the weekend.
The Buckeyes ran away with the first 4 race, posting the boat’s second victory of the weekend. The four finished in 7:26.99 to defeat Stanford by more than 20 seconds.
“I was glad to see the second varsity get their first win,” Andy Teitelbaum, Ohio State head coach, said. “They’re getting better every time down the course. The (first varsity 4) also won two of three this weekend, so it was a good trip for them.
The Ohio State first varsity 8, meanwhile, dropped its third race of the weekend, falling to 0-3 on the season. Ohio State finished in 6:43.15, 11.10 seconds behind the Cardinal’s top boat.
“It’s a very difficult way for the varsity boat to start the season,” Teitelbaum said. “It’s disappointing that the ‘A’ boat wasn’t able to be more competitive against these schools. Even though it’s early in the season, we expected to be closer in these races. We have two weeks now to get things together and prepare for our next race.”
The Ohio State rowing team will play host to the first of two regattas this season at Griggs Reservoir on the Scioto River, Saturday, April 13, when the team takes on Duke and Virginia in the ACC/Big Ten Double Duals. Michigan also will take part in the event.
