COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 16th-ranked Ohio State (7-2) women’s lacrosse team suffered a 10-5 loss to the unbeaten and second ranked Maryland Terrapins (10-0) Sunday afternoon in the final game of the Big Ten/ACC Challange held at the Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. Playing in a strong breeze with a temperature of 33 degrees (-4 wind chill) Maryland scored the first five goals of the game and never allowed the Buckeyes to come closer than two (6-4, 7-5) in the contest. Maryland’s 10-0 start for the season marks the ninth time the Terrapins have started the season 10-0. In the first game Sunday, No. 11 Penn State defeated No. 9 North Carolina, 9-7.
Maryland wasted little time in scoring just 46 second into the game on a Sonia Judd goal, assisted by Kristie Leggio. Judd scored again at 2:12 to make it 2-0. At 4:27, Leggio scored on an assist from Acacia Walker. Terrapin goals by Jessica Dorney (12:49) and Kelly Coppedge (15:39) gave Maryland a 5-0 lead. Ohio State’s Regina Oliver (So., Pottstown, Pa.) put the Buckeyes on the scoreboard with a goal at 16:54. Oliver scored again at 22:01 with an assist from Tracey Bounds (Sr., Ellicott City, Md.) to cut the Maryland lead to 5-2. The Terrapins closed out the first half with a Walker goal at 22:59 to go at halftime leading 6-2.
Ohio State opened the second half with Oliver’s third goal at 31:55. A free position attempt by Caroline Weatherill (Jr., Malvern, Pa.) at 33:18 cut the Terrapin lead to 6-4. Maryland made it 7-4 with a goal by Lauren Warren at 45:41. Ohio State countered that at 46:25 with a goal by Shannon Wilson (Sr., Sherkston, Ontario), making it 7-5. Maryland scored three consecutive goals to build a 10-5 lead for the final margin. Annie Collins started the run, scoring at 54:00. Just 59 seconds later, Coppedge scored (54:59) her second goal of the game on an assist from Judd. Walker closed out the scoring in the game with her second goal at 57:53, assisted by Leggio.
In goal for Maryland, Alexis Venechanos recorded nine saves for the win. OSU’s Erin Forquer (So., Shaker Heights, Ohio) picked up 13 saves in the loss.
The Buckeyes return to the road for a 1 p.m. Sun., April 6 American Lacrosse Conference game at Davidson.

COLUMBUS, Ohio -No. 11 Penn State defeated No. 9 North Carolina, 9-7 in the third game of the Big Ten/ACC Challenge. The Nittany Lions (5-4) had two goals scored by Emily Chambers and Kristen Burke. The Tar Heels (4-6) had two goals scored by Beth Ames and Melissa McCarthy. In the final game of the Challenge, No. 2 Maryland (10-0) defeated No. 16 Ohio State (7-2), 10-5.
Penn State opened the scoring with the first three goals of the game. Colleen O’Hara started the scoring at 7:06. Chambers scored at 10:22, assisted by Katie Hartman. PSU made it 3-0 with a Katie Jeschke goal at 13:46. North Carolina responded with the next three-goal beginning with a free position score by McCarthy. At 17:44 McCarthy scored her second goal. Brooke Young, on a free position attempt, scored at 19:17 to tie the game at three. Penn State scored two quick goals with Kristen Burke scoring from Chambers at 21:02 and Stephanie Curnoles scoring at 21:18 to hold a 5-3 lead. The Tar Heels closed out the scoring in the half with an Ames goal assisted by Brooke Dieringer to have Penn State lead 5-4.
The Nittany Lions opened the second half the another three-goal run. Shari Maslin started the run with a goal at 37:23. Second goals by Burke (40:37) and Chambers (47:43) gave Penn State an 8-4 lead. The Tar Heels responded with a free position goal by Ames, her second, at 53:56. North Carolina scored again at 56:08 with a Dieringer goal, assisted by McCarthy to cut the PSU lead to 8-6. The Nittany Lions made it a three-goal lead (9-6) at 58:16 with a free position goal by Jamie Donohue. The Tar Heels responded with a Lynne Quattrone goal at 58:53 on an assist from Dieringer to close to the final margin of 9-7.
In goal for North Carolina was Katelyn Hoffman who recorded six saves for the Tar Heels. Penn State’s Lee Tortorelli picked up 11 saves for the Nittany Lions in the win.
