COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 16th-ranked Ohio State (6-1, 2-0 American Lacrosse Conference) women’s lacrosse team made it six wins in a row with a 12-9 victory at No. 14 Notre Dame this afternoon at Moose Krause Stadium. The Buckeyes have won six consecutive games this season equaling Ohio State’s longest winning streak in program history, set last season when the Buckeyes won the first six games in 2002. OSU’s Regina Oliver (So., Pottstown, Pa.), named the American Lacrosse Conference Player of the Week today, scored a team-high four goals with Caroline Weatherill (Jr., Malvern, Pa.) and Noemi Hites (Jr., Pleasanton, Calif.) adding two goals each. Notre Dame’s Danielle Shearer and Lauren Fischer had two goals each for the Irish.
Ohio State wasted little time as Shannon Wilson (Sr., Sherkston, Ontario) scored just 10 seconds into the game. Goals by Oliver at 3:13 and Tracey Bounds (Sr., Ellicott City, Md.) at 5:52 gave the Buckeyes a 3-0 lead. Notre Dame responded with two goals in 42 seconds to close the lead to one. Shearer put the Irish on the board at 6:03 with Fischer adding the second goal at 6:45. The Buckeyes countered with a KC Carter (Fr., Birchrunville, Pa.) goal at 9:04 on an assist by Bounds. Oliver’s second goal at 10:20 put OSU up, 5-2. Fischer connected for her second goal at 13:17 with an assist by Abby Owen. OSU’s Noemi Hites (Jr., Pleasanton, Calif.) found the net 23 seconds later at 13:40. The Irish responded with a goal at 18:15 by Eleanor Weille, assisted by Shearer. Oliver continued to find the net, scoring her third goal of the half at 24:15 with an assist from Hites. With Notre Dame trailing, 7-4, goals by Shearer (26:25) and Meredith Simon (27:23) cut the Buckeye lead to one. With just 37 second left (29:23) in the half, OSU’s Oliver tallied her fourth goal to give Ohio State an 8-6 lead. The Buckeyes scored first in the second half on a free position shot by Weatherill at 37:24, giving OSU a 9-6 lead. The Irish responded with goals by Owen at 40:33 and by Anne Riley, assisted by Crysti Foote, at 42:02 to close to within one goal at 9-8. Weatherill scored again on a free position shot at 47:04 and with Hites’ second goal at 53:24, assisted by Evans gave OSU an 11-8 lead. Notre Dame cut the margin to two (11-9) at 54:48 with a Foote goal on an assist from Simon. OSU’s Alexia Vogler (Sr., Ellicott City, Md.) closed out the scoring at 58:32 for the 12-9 Buckeye win.
In goal for Notre Dame, Jen White had nine save for the Irish, while OSU’s Erin Forquer (So., Shaker Height, Ohio) had nine saves in her sixth consecutive victory.
Ohio State will now host the Big Ten/ACC Challenge this weekend. In the first day of competition, Fri., March 28, second ranked Maryland (8-0) will face 11th-ranked Penn State (4-3) at 5 p.m. The Buckeyes will then face ninth-ranked North Carolina (3-4) at 7 p.m. In the second day of action, Sun., March 30, Penn State will play North Carolina at noon with Ohio State hosting Maryland at 2 p.m.
