COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 11th-ranked Ohio State (1-1) women’s lacrosse team overcame a 6-5 lead by 19th-ranked Richmond (0-1) with goals by Shannon Wilson (Sr., Sherkston, Ontario) and Tracey Bounds (Sr., Ellicott City, Md.) to defeat the Spiders, 7-6 at Crenshaw Field Sunday afternoon. Wilson’s second goal in the second half tied the game at six with 13:56 left in the contest. Bounds scored her third goal of the day with 3:46 left to give OSU the victory. Spider Katie Dolan also tied for game-high honors with three scores while Polly Purcell added two goals.
Richmond opened the scoring with a Dolan goal with 2:35 gone in the first half from a Purcell assist. Bounds tied the game at one at 6:50 and the Buckeyes took a 2-1 lead with a KC Carter (Fr., Birchrunville, Pa.) goal assisted by Bounds. Richmond tied the game at 9:07 at two-all. Twenty-five seconds later, OSU regained the lead at 9:32 with the second goal by Bounds. Spider Dolan scored her second goal of the game at 12:28 to tie the score at three. Richmond took a 4-3 lead at 14:20 with Purcell’s second goal of the game. The Buckeyes closed out the scoring in the first half at 18:37 with a tally by Regina Oliver (So., Pottstown, Pa.) to tie the game at four.
Richmond broke the halftime tie at 30:26 with a goal by Lexi Poklemba to hold a 5-4 lead. OSU tied the game, five-all, at 41:09 on a Wilson goal. The Spiders, with the third goal by Dolan, took a 6-5 lead at 42:47. Wilson’s second goal of the half at 46:04 tied the game at 6-6. With just 3:46 left in the contest, Bounds recorded her third goal of the game on an assist from Oliver to give Ohio State a 7-6 lead for the win. In goal, OSU’s Erin Forquer (So., Shaker Heights, Ohio) made four saves for the Buckeyes. Spider goalie Kelly Johnson recorded 12 saves for Richmond.
Ohio State continues play on the road next weekend when the Buckeyes face Lafayette (0-1) at 1 p.m., Sunday, March 9.
