COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 18th-ranked Ohio State (4-1, 1-0 American Lacrosse Conference) women’s lacrosse team built an eight-goal lead in the first 16 minutes against Virginia Tech (0-5) and went on to a 15-4 victory over the Hokies. OSU’s Noemi Hites (Jr., Pleasanton, Calif.) scored a game-high four goals, all in the first 16 minutes, to lead Ohio State. Alexia Vogler (Sr., Ellicott City, Md.), Caroline Weatherill (Jr., Malvern, Pa.) and Tracey Bounds (Sr., Ellicott City, Md.) added two goals each for the Buckeyes while Hokie Kate Threadgold (Jr., Largs Bay, Australia) had a team-high two goals for Virginia Tech.
Ohio State began a run of eight consecutive goals with a tally by Hites at 1:38. Vogler made it 2-0 at 2:27. Bounds added a goal at 2:50 and with a score by Weatherill at 3:56, the Buckeyes had a 4-0 lead. Hokie goalie Jamie McGraw (Jr., Annapolis, Md.) left the game at this point and was replaced with Carrie Hill (Fr., Severna Park, Md.). The Buckeye scoring run continued with goals by Hites at 13:06 and 13:15, the second assisted by Oliver. Bounds scored her second goal at 14:03 and Hites added her fourth at 15:51, assisted by Weatherill, to give Ohio State an 8-0 lead. Virginia Tech stopped the Buckeye scoring run at 18:04 on Stephanie Jones’ (Fr., Arnold, Md.) goal on an assist by Hilary Fay (So., Medford, N.J.). OSU’s Regina Oliver (So., Pottstown, Pa.) made it 9-1 on a free position attempt at 23:53 and with Vogler’s second goal at 26:22, with an assist to Ashley Evans (So., Ellicott City, Md.), Ohio State held a 10-1 lead. Hokie Threadgold scored back-to-back goals at 28:05 and 28:15 to cut the OSU margin to 10-3. Evans added the final goal of the half at 29:51 for the Buckeyes to make it 11-3.
Ohio State opened the second half with a free position goal by Weatherill, her second, at 41:54. The Buckeyes made it a 10-goal lead at 43:42 with a Shannon Wilson (Sr., Sherkston, Ontario) goal. Virginia Tech cut the margin to 13-4 with a scored by Katie Madden (Sr., Gaithersburg, Md.), assisted by Threadgold. Ten seconds later (48:59) Molly McLaughlin (Jr., Towson, Md.) made it 14-4 with an assist from Wilson. With 6:04 left in the game, OSU goalie Erin Forquer (So., Shaker Heights, Ohio) was replaced by Kim Hastings (Fr., Sewickley, Pa.). Hastings gave up the final goal of the contest, a free position attempt by Sam Sybert (Sr., Reston, Va.) to make the score, 14-5, Ohio State. Hastings, with 2:43 left in the game, was replaced by Taryn Bowen (Jr., Columbus, Ohio) who finished out the game.
For the Buckeyes in goal, Forquer had five saves and gave up four goals. Hastings had one save and gave up a goal while Bowen collected a save in the game. Virginia Tech’s McGraw gave up four goals while Hill had 14 saves and gave up 10 goals.
Ohio State goes on the road next weekend to play at 19th-ranked Northwestern at 1 p.m., Sun., March 23 in an American Lacrosse Conference game. The Buckeyes then face 11th-ranked Notre Dame at 4 p.m., Tues., March 25 in South Bend, Ind.
