COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State men’s hockey senior defenseman Scott Titus has been named to the 2003 Central Collegiate Hockey Association All-Academic Team, the league announced Tuesday. Buckeye senior forward Miguel Lafleche and junior center R.J. Umberger earned honorable mention accolades, while junior Reed Whiting, sophomore forward Lee Spector and redshirt-freshman goalie Dave Caruso received special mention honors.
Titus’ selection to the all-academic team gives the Buckeyes first-team honorees in back-to-back seasons for the first time in over 15 years, as Lafleche earned the honor last season. The Buckeyes have had at least one student-athlete earn CCHA All-Academic Honorable Mention accolades for eight consecutive seasons.
The all-academic team is voted on by the league’s faculty representatives. To be eligible for consideration, a player must have completed at least one academic year, have a 3.00 grade-point average on a 4.00 scale and be a letterwinner for the 2002-03 season. The six top vote getters (including ties), regardless of position, are named to the all-academic team with others who receive votes earning honorable mention. All players who are nominated receive special mention.
Titus, who will graduate this summer with his master’s degree in education, is one of seven CCHA student-athletes to earn all-academic team honors. He received his bachelor’s degree in biology in Spring 2002. A fifth-year senior, Titus is a two-time CCHA All-Academic Team honorable mention and Academic All-Big Ten honoree, as well as a four-time OSU Scholar-Athlete. He is serving as the Buckeyes’ captain this season and has seen action in all 37 games, posting a goal and five assists, as well as a +8 rating.
This is the second time Lafleche, an electrical engineering major, has earned CCHA All-Academic honorable mention accolades, while last season he was named to the all-academic first team. Lafleche is a three-time Ohio State Scholar-Athlete and a two-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree and also has received the OSU Hockey Center Ice Club Scholar-Athlete Award the last two seasons. Lafleche has a career-best 16 points this season.
Umberger, a marketing major, earned Ohio State Scholar-Athlete and Academic All-Big Ten honors last season. He leads OSU and ranks second in the CCHA in scoring with a career-best 49 points, including 23 goals and 26 assists, this year.
Spector, who is majoring in accounting, was named an Ohio State Scholar-Athlete as a freshman last season. He has played in 33 games this year, posting two goals and two assists.
Whiting, a real estate and urban analysis major, earned Ohio State Scholar-Athlete honors the past two seasons and was a special mention CCHA All-Academic Team honoree last season. He has seen action in 36 games this year and has a career-best four points.
Caruso, a marketing major, came to Ohio State in January 2002 and redshirted the second half of that season. This year, he has started eight games, posting a goals-against average of 1.56 as well as two shutouts.
