Meaney, Monahan Claim Ohio State Gymnastics Mixed Pairs Championship – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Juniors Elizabeth Meaney (Ashtabula, Ohio) and Randy Monahan (Elizabethtown, Pa.) combined to win the mixed pairs championship as the Ohio State men’s and women’s gymnastics squad competed in an intrasquad event Saturday night in St. John Arena. The pair posted a 55.775 score to claim the championship.
The event began with nine pairs in the first rotation. The top seven duos advanced to the second rotation and four teams then qualified for the third and final rotation.
In the second rotation, Meaney scored a 9.575 on the balance beam to push her team into first place. She recorded a floor exercise score of 9.225 in the first round and capped the night with a 9.575 on vault. Monahan scored an 8.8 on floor, 9.2 on high bar and a 9.4 on rings.
“Our guys did well tonight,” Monahan said. “Our energy was high and our team looks forward to the season.”
“We are excited about the upcoming season,” Meaney said. “The key will be to improve on tonight’s performance and continue to get better. Though we did well tonight, we still have many things which need improvement.”
The duo of Kaylin Schlecht (So., Marion, Ohio) and Jamey Houle (Sr., Enfield, Conn.) placed second with a score of 55.525. Jill Weber (So., Bel Air, Md.) and Ron Ferris (So., Austintown, Ohio) compiled 54.375 points and landed in third place. The other pair to reach the final rotation was the tandem of Elizabeth Ahlberg (Fr., San Antonio, Texas) and Grant Osborne (Fr., Fort Collins, Colo.).
“Tonight’s meet was an opportunity to see how our team would rise up to competition,” Larry Cox, women’s head coach, said. “Our team has improved every time we have scrimmaged this year and I believe we are right where we need to be.”
“I’m glad that Randy and Liz won the competition,” Miles Avery, men’s head coach said. “Randy did a good job hitting his three events and overall it was a good start for our team.”
