Women’s Volleyball Has Trick Or Treat Win Over No. 25 Illinois, 3-1 – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State (9-10, 3-8 Big Ten) women’s volleyball team, played trick or treat in a 3-1 (30-20, 17-30, 30-25, 30-24) upset victory over No. 25 Illinois (17-4, 8-3) Friday night in St. John Arena. The Buckeye trick was in starting three setters with one playing outside hitter, Heather Whalen (Sr., Kalamazoo, Mich.), who has played outside since the third match of the season and Jackie Schardt (So., Colorado Springs, Colo.) who had her third start at middle hitter. The treat for the Buckeyes was their third conference win this season, upsetting a nationally ranked team. OSU’s Stacey Gordon (Jr., Oshawa, Ontario) continued to play big for the Buckeyes with a match-high 28 kills, hitting .408 and adding five ace serves. OSU’s Amanda Miller (So., Littleton, Colo.) contributed 14 kills and Katherine Grant (So., Nashville, Tenn.) added 11. For Illinois Lisa Argabright had a team-high 17 kills with Melissa Vandrey and Shelly O’Bryan adding nine each.
Game one saw the Buckeyes gain an early lead (8-6) but Illinois stayed close and tied the game at 10 with an Argabright kill. Tied at 12, two Illinois errors gave OSU a 14-12 lead. A Rachel Van Meter kill cut the margin to 14-13. A Gordon kill began a five-point OSU run that included three Illini errors and an Anna Tengnas (Fr., Hyltebruk, Sweden) ace serve for a 19-14 lead. Ohio State continued to build the lead to 10 at 26-16. The Buckeye held a 29-18 margin before an OSU error and an ace serve by Erin Virtue cut the lead to 29-20. Gordon closed out the game with a kill at 30-20. Ohio State hit .778 for the game with 14 kills in 18 attempts and no errors. Illinois hit .032 for the game. Illinois broke a three-all tie with two OSU errors and an Argabright-Jessica Belter block to open a 6-3 lead in game two. OSU trailed 13-10 before kills by Belter and Argabright opened a 15-10 Illinois lead. The Buckeyes trail by four at 21-17 but Illinois would score nine consecutive points to win the game, 30-17. Illinois hit .600 with 12 kills in 20 attempts and no errors. The Buckeyes hit .118.
From a four-all tie in game three, a Briana McCarthy (Fr., Beaver Dam, Wis.) kill and an ace by Tengnas gave OSU a 6-4 lead. A Vandrey kill cut the margin to 6-5, but kills by Schardt and Gordon, an Illinois error and a block by Grant and McCarthy gave the Buckeyes a 10-5 lead. OSU held a 16-10 lead but the Illinois close the gap to 17-15 with a Belter kill. An Illini error and a Gordon kill took the lead to 19-15. Illinois rallied again, tying the game at 20 with an Argabright kill. Gordon responded with two kills for a 22-20 lead. After a Vandry kill, Buckeye kills by Grant and Miller and an ace serve by Gordon made it 25-21. Errors by both teams made it 26-22. Two OSU errors cut the lead to 26-24. OSU’s Miller and Illinois’ Belter exchanged kills, making the score 27-25. The Buckeyes closed out the game with a Gordon kill, a Tengnas ace serve and a McCarthy kill to win the game, 30-25. Ohio State hit .341 for the game to .324 for Illinois. OSU’s Gordon, for the 12th time this season produced double-digit kills in the game with 10.
The Buckeyes opened game four with a four-point run on kills by Gordon, Schardt, a Tengnas ace and an Illinois error. Ohio State held a 7-2 lead before a Vandry kill and two aces from Belter cut the lead to 7-5. A Whalen kill, a service ace by Gordon and an Illini error gave OSU a 10-5 lead. The Buckeyes expanded the lead to as many as nine (18-9) but the Illini would close to within four several times, the last at 28-24, before kills by Miller and Whalen ended the game at 30-24. Ohio State hit .325 for the game to .158 for Illinois.
For the match, Ohio State hit .338 to .246 for the Illini. The Buckeyes had a 69-51 advantage in kills and had a 10-6 margin in ace serves. Buckeye Gordon had a match-high five aces with teammate Tengnas recording a career-high four. OSU gave up 12 service errors to five for the Illini. Defensively, Ohio State had a 45-34 margin in digs. OSU’s Rebecca Kastein (So., Mt. Lebanon, Pa.) picked up a match-high 11 digs. At the net, Illinois enjoyed a 13-4 advantage in team blocks. O’Bryan had a match-high six blocks (one solo, five assists) for Illinois with Argabright adding five (1-4). OSU’s McCarthy produced a match-high 52 assists while Illinois’ Virtue had 50.
Ohio State returns to action Saturday when they host Northwestern (13-10, 4-7), who lost 0-3 (25-30, 25-30, 19-30) to Penn State Friday. OSU’s takes on the Wildcats at 7 p.m. in St. John Arena.
BUCKEYE NOTES:
Anna Tengnas had a career-high four ace serves against Illinois. Her previous best was two at Illinois.
Jackie Schardt had her third start in the middle and contributed a career-high six kills against Illinois. She hit .857 for the match on seven swings.
OSU had a season-high 10 aces in the match. Stacey Gordon had five, Anna Tengnas four and Briana McCarthy one.
Stacey Gordon’s 28 kills extends her streak of double-figure kill matches to 67. It was her 46th career match (of 82) with 20 or more kills. Gordon has had double-figure kills in 80 of 82 career matches. She had 10 kills in game three for her 12th game this season with double-figure kills.
Stacey Gordon’s 28 kills raises her career total to 1,719. She need 84 kills to become OSU’s all-time career leader. Holly O’Leary (1987-90) is the career leader with 1,803.
Stacey Gordon’s five ace serves raises her career total to 111 and moves her to 12th on the OSU career list. She passed Lisa Vitali (1986-89) with 106 and Vanessa Wouters (1996-97) with 109 for the 12th position. Gordon stands 10 behind No. 11 Holly O’Leary (1987-90) with 121.
Stacey Gordon’s nine digs gives her 988 for her career. She need 12 to become the 12th OSU player to reach 1,000 career digs and would become only the fifth with 1,000 career digs and kills.
