Women’s Volleyball Falls 3-1 At No. 23 Wisconsin – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State (8-10 overall, 2-8 Big Ten) women’s volleyball squad dropped a 3-1 (30-15, 26-30, 30-20, 30-22) decision at No. 23 Wisconsin (16-5, 8-2) Saturday night in the Wisconsin Field House. Ohio State’s Stacey Gordon (Jr., Oshawa, Ontario) shared match-high honors with Wisconsin’s Jill Odenthal with 19 kills each. Buckeye Amanda Miller (So., Littleton, Colo.) added eight kills for OSU. Badger Lisa Zukowski had 15 kills for Wisconsin with Sheila Shaw 13 and Marian Weidner, 11.
From a 2-2 tie in game one, Wisconsin outscored Ohio State, 8-3, to take a 10-5 lead. The Badgers continued to expand the lead to win the game, 30-15. Wisconsin hit .375 for the game to .088 for Ohio State.
Ohio State took a 6-3 lead in game two with a Heather Whalen (Sr., Kalamazoo, Mich.) – Katherine Grant (So., Nashville, Tenn.) block. Wisconsin came back to tie the game at 10. Tied at 12, a Badger error and a kill by Gordon gave Ohio State a 14-12 lead. OSU took the lead to 20-16 with a Miller kill. Two Wisconsin errors added to the lead at 22-16. The Badgers would cut the lead to three several times, the last at 29-26, but a Gordon kill ended the game at 30-26. The Buckeyes hit .412 for the game to .244 for Wisconsin.
Tied at three-all in game three, Wisconsin scored six consecutive points to open a 9-3 lead. The Badgers continued to build the lead and won the game, 30-20. Wisconsin hit .351 for the game to .156 for Ohio State.
Wisconsin scored five consecutive points from a four-all tie to open a 9-5 lead. The Badgers took the lead to 10 at 26-14 and won the game, 30-22. The Badgers hit .371 for the game to OSU’s .276. For the match, Wisconsin hit .331 to Ohio State’s .233. The Badgers had a 68-47 margin in kills and out served the Buckeyes, 13-3. Wisconsin gave up 14 service errors to 12 for Ohio State. The Badgers had a 58-43 advantage in digs. Badger Jill Maier had a match-high 18 digs while OSU’s Gordon had a team-high 12 digs. Ohio State had an 11-7 margin in team blocks. For the Buckeyes, D’wan Shackleford (Sr., Newark, Ohio) had a match-high seven assist blocks. Badger Morgan Shields recorded 59 assists while OSU’s Briana McCarthy (Fr., Beaver Dam, Wis.) had 32.
Ohio State returns to St. John Arena for two matches next weekend. The Buckeyes will host Illinois, Friday, Oct. 31 and Northwestern, Saturday, Nov. 1. Both matches are scheduled for 7 p.m.
NOTES: Ohio State’s Stacey Gordon, with 19 kills tonight continued her consecutive match streak of double-figure kill matches to 66.
