Women’s Volleyball Sweeps Iowa, 30-28, 30-23, 31-29 – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State (8-8 overall, 2-6 Big Ten) women’s volleyball squad, behind a match-high 27 kills from Stacey Gordon (Jr., Oshawa, Ontario) and 14 by Amanda Miller (So., Littleton, Colo.) defeated Iowa 3-0 (30-28, 30-23, 31-29). The Hawkeyes (5-13, 0-8) received a team-high eight kills from Jitka Stehnova and Meredith Stach added seven. Gordon’s 27 kills extends her streak of matches with double-figure kills to 64.
Iowa had an early 6-3 lead in game one. At 8-6, Iowa, kills by Heather Whalen (Sr., Kalamazoo, Mich.) and Miller and an ace serve by Whalen tied the game at nine. At 14-all, a Tiana Costanzo kill and an OSU error gave the Hawkeyes a 16-14 lead. OSU tied the game at 19 with a Gordon kill. a Briana McCarthy (Fr., Beaver Dam, Wis.) kill, an Iowa error and a Gordon kill gave Ohio State a 22-19 lead. OSU took the lead to five at 26-21 with a Gordon kill. Iowa trailed, 28-24, before a Stehnova solo block, kills by Stach and Carolyn Giese and a Buckeye error tied the game at 28. OSU regained the lead with a Miller kill and won the game, 30-28, with an Anna Tengnas (Fr., Hyltebruk, Sweden) ace serve. Iowa hit .214 for the game to .189 for Ohio State. OSU’s Gordon recorded 11 kills in the game.
Three Miller kills and one each from Gordon and D’wan Shackleford (Sr., Newark, Ohio) opened a 5-2 lead for Ohio State in game two. At 13-10, OSU, a Gordon kill and two Iowa errors opened a 16-10 Buckeye lead. Iowa would get to within three, at 23-20, before two Hawkeye errors and an ace from McCarthy made it 26-20. Leading 27-22, kills from Whalen and Miller set game point at 29-22. Iowa’s Stehnov, with a kill, made it 29-23. Gordon’s 19th kill of the match closed out the game at 30-23. Ohio State hit .333 for the game to .192 for Iowa. A Whalen kill, a block by Shackleford and Miller and an Iowa error opened a 3-0 lead for OSU in game three. Five Ohio State errors, a Laura Simpson kill and a block by Giese and Simpson gave Iowa a 7-3 lead. Trailing, 20-18, back-to-back kills by Gordon tied the game at 20. Tied at 24, two Buckeye errors made it 26-24, Iowa. OSU’ Miller, with a kill, and a Hawkeye error tied the game at 26. Service errors by both teams moved the score to 27 all. Another OSU service error gave Iowa a 28-27 lead. A Gordon kill tied the at 28. A Buckeye block by Jackie Schardt (So., Colorado Springs, Colo.) and Whalen gave OSU a 29-28 lead, serving match point as Iowa called time out. The Hawkeyes responded with a Stehnova kill to tie the game at 29. Two Iowa ball handling errors gave OSU a 31-29 win. Ohio State hit .167 for the game to Iowa’s -.023. OSU with one block in the first two games, had six in the third game.
For the match, Ohio State hit .226 to Iowa’s .117. The Buckeyes had a 57-33 kill advantage and out served the Hawkeyes, 5-0. OSU gave up 13 service errors to four for Iowa. The Hawkeyes had a 45-44 margin in digs with OSU’s Rebecca Kastein (So., Mt. Lebanon, Pa.) recording a match/season high of 15. Iowa out blocked Ohio State, 8-7. OSU’s McCarthy had a match-high 50 assists while Iowa’s Stehnova recorded 22.
The Buckeyes will play at No. 13 Penn State (17-3, 6-2) at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 22 in University Park, Pa. and the faces No. 23 Wisconsin (14-5, 6-2) at 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 25 in Madison, Wis.
