Women’s Volleyball Drops 3-2 Match To Minnesota – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State (7-8 overall, 1-6 Big Ten) women’s volleyball team had a 2-1 lead against Minnesota (12-7, 5-2) but the Gophers rallied to take the match, 3-2 (20-30, 30-17, 29-31, 30-24, 15-9) Friday night in St. John Arena in front of 1,021 fans. Ohio State’s Stacey Gordon (Jr., Oshawa, Ontario) scored a match-high 28 kills for the Buckeyes. It was her 63rd consecutive double-figure match. Heather Whalen (Sr., Kalamazoo, Mich.) and Katherine Grant (So., Nashville, Tenn.) each added 10 kills for OSU. Minnesota’s Cassie Busse recorded a team-high 20 kills with Trisha Bratford adding 11.
Ohio State opened game one with a 2-0 lead from a Gordon kill and a Gordon-Grant block. The Buckeyes continued to build on the lead to take a 30-20 win. OSU hit .323 for the game while Minnesota hit -.077.
The teams exchanged roles in game two. After OSU opened up a 10-7 lead with a Gordon kill, Minnesota got kills from Bratford and Erin Martin and a Busse-Meredith Nelson block to tie the game at 10. Tied at 12, the Gophers scored five consecutive points to take a 17-12 lead. Minnesota continued to build the lead going on to win 30-17. The Gophers hit .083 for the game to -.130 for OSU.
Ohio State took an early lead in game three, but the Gophers countered to tie the game at 10. Tied at 21, a Buckeye error and a Busse kill gave Minnesota a 23-21 lead. The Gophers took the lead to three (26-23) with a block by Jessica Byrnes and Bratford. At 27-24, a Gordon kill and blocks by Jackie Schardt (So., Colorado Springs, Colo.) and Briana McCarthy (Fr., Beaver Dam, Wis.) and McCarthy and Gordon tied the game at 27. A Minnesota error put OSU ahead, 28-27. A Buckeye error tied the game at 28. A Gordon kill and an OSU error moved the score to 29-all. A Gordon kill set game point at 30-29. A Buckeye block by Grant and Whalen ended the game at 31-29, giving OSU a 2-1 lead in the match. Ohio State hit .151 in the game to .000 for Minnesota. OSU’s Gordon had 10 kills in the game for her ninth game this season with 10 or more kills.
Tied at three in game four, Minnesota built an 8-5 lead. The Gophers scored the next six points to open a 14-6 lead and held on for a 30-24 win to tie the match at two games each. Minnesota hit .154 for the game to -.119 for OSU.
From a two-all tied in game five, Minnesota, with kills from Busse and Martin and an OSU error opened a 5-3 lead. Minnesota took the lead to six at 14-8 and won the game and match with a Martin kill at 15-9. The Gophers hit .692 for the game to .500 for OSU.
For the match, Minnesota hit .081 to .075 for Ohio State. OSU had a 56-50 advantage in kills. Each squad had four ace serve but OSU gave up 20 service errors to 11 for Minnesota. Defensively, the Gophers had a 69-60 margin in digs with Gopher Paula Gentil recording a match-high 24 digs. OSU’s Anna Tengnas (Fr., Hyltebruk, Sweden) had a team-high 16. At the net, Minnesota out blocked Ohio State, 19.5 to 16. Nelson produced a match-high 11 assist blocks for the Gophers with OSU’s Schardt collecting a team-high seven. OSU’s McCarthy had a match-high 45 assists while Lindsey Taatjes had 42 for Minnesota.
Ohio State will face Iowa (5-12, 0-7) at 2 p.m. Sunday in St. John Arena.
