Women’s Volleyball Loses 3-1 At Illinois – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State (7-7 overall, 1-5 Big Ten) women’s volleyball squad dropped a 3-1 (30-17, 30-26, 27-30, 30-20) decision to Illinois (13-3, 4-2) Saturday night in front of 1,511 in Huff Hall. Ohio State’s Stacey Gordon (Jr., Oshawa, Ontario) had a match-high 30 kills for the Buckeyes with Heather Whalen (Sr., Kalamazoo, Mich.) adding 13 and Amanda Miller (So., Littleton, Colo.) 11. Rachel VanMeter had a team-high 18 kills for Illinois with Lisa Argabright adding 17 and Jessica Belter, 11.
With game one tied at five, Illinois scored six consecutive points to open an 11-5 lead. The Illini expanded the lead to eight at 14-6. Illinois took the margin to 13 for a final, 30-17 win. The Illini hit .324 for the game to .071 for Ohio State.
The Illini controlled game two, leading 21-19. OSU tied the match at 22 and 23 with Miller kills. The Buckeyes fell behind again and then closed to within one (26-25) with a Gordon kill. The Illini outscored OSU, 4-1, to take a 30-26 victory. The Illini hit .333 for the game to .255 for the Buckeyes.
Ohio State opened game three with the first six points. Gordon, with a kill started the run. A Whalen, Gordon and Jackie Schardt (So., Colorado Springs, Colo.) block followed. Kills by Schardt and Whalen, a ace serve from Briana McCarthy (Fr., Beaver Dam, Wis.) and a Illini error completed the run. Illinois trailed 25-19 before putting together a six-point run to tie the game at 25. A Gordon kill made it 26-25, OSU. Argabright countered with a kill to tie at 26. A Buckeye error gave Illinois a 27-26 lead. Gordon responded with a kill to tie the game at 27. An Illinois error, a block by Gordon, Grant and McCarthy set game point at 29-27. Gordon closed out the game with a kill at 30-27. Both teams hit .239 for the game.
In game four, Illinois took an early 10-6 lead. The Illini expanded the lead to 15-9 and built a 10-point lead (24-14). The Illini maintained the lead, taking a 30-20 win in the game. Illinois hit .343 for the game to .135 for Ohio State.
For the match, Illinois hit .306 to OSU’s .180. The Illini had a 67-63 edge in kills while Ohio State had a 7-5 advantage in ace serves. The Buckeyes gave up nine service errors to four for the Illini. Illinois’s Erin Virtue had a match-high four ace serves. The Illini recorded a 69-62 margin in digs with Kathleen Bazzetta collecting a match-high 16 digs. At the net, Illinois had a 14-10 margin in team blocks with Argabright recording a match-high 8 (2 solos, 6 assists) total blocks. Illini setter Virtue recorded a match-high 57 assists with OSU’s McCarthy collecting 52.
Ohio State returns to action next week with two home matches in St. John Arena. OSU will host Minnesota at 7 p.m., Friday, Oct. 17 and face Iowa at 2 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 19.
